  1. I believe both sides have left open the possibility of playing it. I remember Davidson, St Thomas's new conference mate, played D3 Guilford last year.
  2. As far as I can tell, these are the only D1 Catholic schools not affiliated with a specific Catholic Order Mount St. Mary's - Associated with several Archdioceses, is the second largest Seminary in the US and home to a pilgrimage site Seton Hall - Run by the Archdiocese of Newark (Diocese of Newark when it founded SH) St Thomas - Run by the Archdiocese of St Paul and Minneapolis, formerly run by the Holy Cross Fathers Bellarmine - Founded by the Archdiocese of Louisville, became independent after merging with Ursuline College Sacred Heart - Founded by the Diocese of Bridgeport, first independent Catholic University in the US San Diego - Founded by the Diocese of San Diego, now run by an Independent board, of which the Bishop of San Diego is a permanent member Incarnate Word is run by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who are part of the worldwide Sisters of Charity
  3. Not really sure if this belongs here, but I don't know where else it would. Would the NCAA consider enacting an anti-Confederacy themed nickname policy, similar to the one involving Native themed nicknames? As far as I can tell it would only effect a few schools; Washington & Lee Generals - named for General Washington, but also General Lee (This ones kinda iffy) Ole Miss Rebels UNLV Rebels Millsaps Majors - in honor of Confederate Major Reuben Millsaps The ruling could also be expanded to school names, which would knock out a few more.
  4. I think it would be more likely they give Bucky a black W instead of his white one
  5. Not to be rude, but do you live under a rock? We've been having this conversation for a while now.
  6. Personally, I don't have a problem with the ads. The one on the side doesn't bother me, but occasionally I'll accidentally click on the bottom one when it pops up. In comparison to other sites, it really isn't all that bad.
  7. Some real realignment news for a change, instead of just speculation. https://www.stthomas.edu/athletics-future/ The NCAA grants St Thomas a waiver to go from D3 to D1, the first time this has happened since it was forbidden in 2010, the last team to do this was Buffalo in 1993. St Thomas is best known for getting kicked out of the MIAC for being to dominant. They will join the Summit League and play football in the Pioneer. Mens hockey is likely to join the newly recreated CCHA, while the Womens team joins the WCHA. They will be the second largest, and largest private, school in the Pioneer and are only Minnesota's second D1 program. The Tommies won the D3 Basketball tourney in 2011 and 2016 and won 8 straight dance titles from 2010-17 and 10 in the last 15 years. Facilities are a bit of a concern as only 14 D1 schools (7 from the NEC) have a smaller football stadium, only 22 have a smaller basketball arena, 3 have a smaller full-time ice arena, and 7 (Including 4 from the MAAC) have a smaller baseball field (I looked at pictures of some of the baseball fields that are smaller than St Thomas and I they look worse than most High School stadiums in my area, which is not a baseball hotbed).
  8. I've been rethinking how the MEAC falls apart, and I think it could go something like this; Dayton joins the Big East- Despite what the conference is saying, the Big East should try and get to 12. Dayton is a Catholic school in the leagues footprint who was a national title contender last year and maintains the balance between Eastern and Midwestern schools. Delaware joins the A-10- This would give the A-10 another Eastern Flagship school Howard joins the Colonial- A high quality school in the middle of the leagues footprint NC Central and Norfolk St join the Big South- Each teams biggest rival recently left for the Big South SC St to the A-Sun- Now a geographical outlier in a crumbling conference, they jump at the first offer Morgan St and Delaware St to the AmericaEast- The only two remaining football-playing members get the AEC to 6 football teams Coppin St and UMES join the CIAA (D2)- The only option for staying D1 would be with the NEC, who I don't think offers them. I thought about having Howard join the A-10 instead of Delaware, but that would give the conference 3 teams in the DC area and would be a huge step up for Howard. I also could see Morgan and DSU going to the NEC instead of the AEC.
  9. Savannah St left last year to move down to DII and Winston-Salem St did the same thing 10 years ago.
  10. Yes, but both are the second largest public university in the state and the little brother of the larger one in a better conference.
  11. Even though we now know they're staying in the MEAC, it wouldn't have been unusual for the State gov't to get involved and force Delaware to vote in favor of Delaware St, a la UVA-VA Tech in the ACC.
  12. I hadn't either. My Google search for the flag gave me 3 options; Straight border between red and blue without a date, Curved border between red and blue without a date, and Curved border between red and blue with a date. I chose the last one because it was the one that was shown as a flag most often. The first two options were mostly just illustrations. I hope that makes sense. If it doesn't a search of your own might better show what I'm referring to.
  13. The audacity to include a school that isn't a member of the AAU! Next thing you know they'll be adding community colleges
  14. I'm not sold on the serifed C. However, I do like that you "shaved" of the point on it so it looks less like the Reds C.
  15. I don't think Howard would go to the NEC. They are far and away the biggest name-brand HBCU. Steph Curry is a donor to their golf team and most of the kids who visit HBCUs visit Howard. I think Howard would end up in a better conference, such as the CAA, Big South, or maybe even the SoCon.
  16. A bitter irony that as HBCUs are getting more attention than ever, one of their 2 D1 conferences is crumbling before our eyes.
  17. Alumni Stadium would be the second smallest in the CAA and the smallest among full members. Memorial Hall is more of a problem, as it is less than 2/3 the size of the next smallest, Cabot Center, the home of Northeatern's women's team (The men's team shares Matthews Arena with the Northeastern and Wentworth hockey teams). The baseball stadium is on the smaller side of average. To be fair, no one in the CAA has facilities on par with Delaware or JMU. The JMU football stadium is 2x the size of any other, excluding Delaware which is only a little smaller. JMU also built a brand-spanking-new basketball arena that's the second largest in the conference, but Delaware has one of the smallest (still 3 times the size of Delaware St). Really the only reason I put DSU in the CAA was because they would be in-state rivals with Delaware and would even up the conference if they added my hypothetical Baltimore St. Knowing now that an HBCU Baltimore St will likely never happen, I would see them ending up in the NEC or AEC with Morgan, Coppin, and possibly UMES.
  18. I think a post-merger Baltimore St would be good enough to get into the CAA and could bring along Delaware St. If Morgan St and Coppin St remain separate, I think they would join the AmericaEast along with Delaware St. As far as Baltimore-area mergers go, It appears that Baltimore-Morgan is 1A, Baltimore-Coppin is 1B, and Baltimore-UMBC is 2. As far as travel goes, UB to UMBC is shorter than Coppin to Morgan (18 vs 20 minutes), but I would have to agree with you that their isn't enough overlap between UB and UMBC for any significant change to the budget.
  19. I put them in the Colonial because that is where Delaware is. Delaware St isn't really in the NEC footprint and they would be only the second public school in the conference. I guess I misremembered. I looked it up and their seems to be occassional plans to merge Baltimore with either Coppin or Morgan or UMBC, but I didn't see anything about a Coppin-Morgan merger. With that being said, the State of Maryland is making some budget cuts right now (just like almost every other state) and it would almost certainly be cheaper to merge Coppin and Morgan, as well as a UB-UMBC merger. It doesn't make a ton of sense, out side of past history, to operate 2 large, public HBCUs in the same city (same applies to UB-UMBC). I agree with you on UMES. They don't have a football team or any major rivalries and only really have success in bowling, which they could keep as a DI program.
  20. And with North Carolina A&T going to the big south, where does that put SC St? Might as well dissolve the MEAC, or merge with the WAC lol If all potential moves go through as reported, I think the MEAC will dissolve. NC Central, Howard, and Norfolk St to the Big South, Delaware St and Baltimore St (Merger of Coppin and Morgan that gets discussed every few years) to the Colonial, MD-Eastern Shore to the DII CIAA and SC St to either the DII CIAA or the DII SIAC.
  21. Even though the Rebels could be a Star Wars reference, in context (had the name since 1936, plays in a state with Confederate symbols on the state flag, playing for a University that frequently has on-campus KKK rallies, mascot until 2011 was a literal Confederate soldier, etc...) no one is thinking it refers to anything other than the Confederacy. I also think that most peoples first instinct upon hearing "Rebels" is to think of the Confederacy. Contrast this with Rangers. I would think that most people don't think of the Texas Rangers law enforcement upon hearing "Rangers". The other complicating factor with this is that the Texas Rangers still exist, whereas the Confederacy doesn't. For me, I think of it the opposite of you, I guess. I think the Rebels need a new name (Landsharks?), but the Rangers don't, although I wouldn't mind a change to the Dallas Rangers. This might provide enough separation and the name Texas Rangers has always been a pet peeve of mine because the Houston Astros also play in Texas. Also, I found out today that the New York Rangers were also named after the law enforcement agency. Their original owner was nicknamed Tex and thus the team was "Tex's Rangers".
  22. Following up on my previous comment, with the news that the SEC is pushing for a change of the Mississippi state flag, I wouldn't be shocked if Ole Miss gets rid of the Rebels nickname, either voluntarily or unvoluntarily.
  23. The Juneteenth Flag. The only thing I would change is to get rid of the date running down the end.
  24. I did one earlier for Indy ball, so I figured I'd do another one on the future of Independent hockey. Southern Professional Hockey League (merger of SPHL and Federal League) North Port Huron Prowlers Danville Dashers Elmira Enforcers Watertown Wolves Quad City Storm Peoria Rivermen Evansville Thunderbolts Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs South Winston-Salem Thunderbirds Columbus River Dragons Fayetteville Marksmen Knoxville Ice Bears Huntsville Havoc Birmingham Bulls Pensacola Ice Flyers Macon Mayhem All remaining teams would unfortunately fold due to the financial downturn.
  25. I'd have to do some more digging, but the one that jumps out at me is Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas (I love Texas and it sucks that every school mentioned so far is in Texas). Sul Ross was a Confederate General and the President of Texas A&M, were he is commemorated with a controversial statue. The city of Alpine is over 50% Hispanic/Latinx and I think it would be appropriate for the University to adopt the name of Hispanic-American. Some possibilities include Bernal St after Martha Bernal, a Texas-native and First Latina to recieve a PhD in Physiology, or Diego Archuleta St named after a Union General and the first Hispanic to become a Brigadier General in the US Military. This is the closest thing to a complete list of high schools using Native Nicknames that I could find: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_secondary_school_sports_team_names_and_mascots_derived_from_indigenous_peoples Here is another one for colleges: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_college_sports_team_names_and_mascots_derived_from_indigenous_peoples I don't think any of the College teams will change, but I would like some of the High School one to. Most of the College nicknames are either Warriors or Braves, which may require a change of mascot, but the names should be fine. Some of the High School nicknames though could be on the way out.
