A lot of readers keep asking if new Penguins alternate will feature Pigeon/Robo Penguin logo. I can report that some people in organization pushed for it. I was also reminded by people with Penguins that Mario Lemieux has never liked that logo. So…

Why would he hate yellow? Considering The Yellow Home Jersey ('80/'81 - '84 Pre-Season ONLY) was retired before the '84/'85 Regular Season even started

Anaheim -  ok, could be their primary

Arizona - look dull,  not enought contrast between main base and lower part

    Boston - excellent

    Buffalo - great

    Calgary - magnifique

Carolina - eeee it's reverse retro not reverse current

Chicago - not bad but they could use a real one sweater to reverse.

    Colorado - quite ok.

    Colorado -  Where is red?

Dallas - perfect, make it an permament alternate

Detroit - WTF?! How you could fuc..d up that by adding a black?! You are Red Wings not Blackhawks!

    Edmonton - really good

    Florida - nicely

Los Angeles - one of the best

Minnesota - also one of the best

Montreal -  same question as for Columbus.

Nashville - not so much reversed

New Jersey - intresting use of Scouts

NY Islanders - would be better with shoulders logos and proper yoke

    NY Rangers - yawn..

    Ottawa - I like it

Philadelphia - I wish they do a black jersey but white isn't bad either

Pittsburgh - finally those cowards bring back a robo pen, would be better in yellow but still is my favourite one

San Jose - Will they add white skates to that? Amazing sweater

    Seattle -  very meh

St. Louis - they nailed it, great one

Tampa Bay - white didn't fit into a storm theme.

    Toronto - safety but good

Vancouver - fans finally get a Johnny Canuck

Vegas - one of the best

Washington - I like previous RR more but this one is nicely too.

    Winnipeg - correct

    My top 3:

    Penguins

    Vegas

    Dallas

    Bottom 3:

Detroit (wouldn't be there if they use white)

    Montreal

    Columbus

Why are they Cowards? King Penguin himself, Mario Lemieux H A T E D the pigeon robo hummingbird thingie. And it's only the youngins and newbies that actually like it

You may well be right about the Pens, Islanders and Devils.

I've felt the Devils logo has been outdated for about 20 years now, but they show no signs of alteration, so...

The Pens reverted to the cartoony bird from Robo Penguin in 99, but a lot of people still love that 90s look, so that's why I feel unsure.

Islanders have flirted with change, but never really commit to it. I wonder how soon they will try again.

I mentioned the Leafs because they have had a realistic looking leaf logo for half their existence, and a simplified, geometric leaf for the other half. I much prefer their current logo, and I hope they keep this design for a long time, but there's 5 decades of something else clogging up their history.

The Bruins have had their spoked B for 73 years, and their color scheme for 88 years. All the changes recently have been to third and specialty jerseys, and I don't see the team adopting any of their ugly bear designs as a main look.

As long as Lemieux is still connected to the Franchise, I highly doubt that dead pos pigeon robo thing comes back. I know it's popular with the youngsters (us old timers loathe it and are glad the Skating Penguin came back) but the New(er) Skating Penguin has 3 Cups attached to it.

They're not Penguins, they're Chickens for cowardly refuse to use RoboPen.

Anyway Gin & Juice is always a great shirt.

HA HA HA HA HA! Nobody wants that garbage Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium pigeon / robo logo back except the youngins who have no idea why most Pittsburghers don't like it, the fact that King Penguin himself Mario Lemieux doesn't like it should say something! I'm sorry I cannot UNSEE nor UNLEARN what that howard baldwin pos pigeon / robo Represents.  Ya know that bull**** that Lemieux had to go through (fighting with the Commonwealth of PA, Allegheny County and City of Pittsburgh) to get the Pens a New Arena, yeah baldwin Created that Problem by NOT jumping on the Plan B proposal with the Pirates and Steelers to get New Ball Park, Stadium and Arena had baldwin jumped on it

Pittsburgh Post Gazette article written by Ron Cook (interviewing howard baldwin)
Baldwin cared deeply about the Penguins and their fans and, for a time in the 1990s, was the city's most beloved sports owner. But no one knew at the time he was keeping a winning team together by giving huge contracts to Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and so many others that he didn't have the money to do the deals. It wasn't until the franchise filed for bankruptcy in October, 1998, that we realized just how reckless and foolish many of his decisions were with the players, with Spectacor Management Group, with Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh and with city and county officials.
    - Although the contract with SMG, which managed Mellon Arena, was cited as the overriding cause of the bankruptcy, it was Baldwin's deal with the city and county that still could force the Penguins out of town. In '97, he accepted a $12.9 million Band-Aid for club seats and other improvements at the arena instead of jumping on the Plan B bandwagon with the Pirates and Steelers, who built terrific new facilities.
"There was talk of new stadiums then, but no guarantees," Baldwin said. "I thought it was important to add the club seats without adding to our debt service. Those club seats are good seats. The arena isn't the problem there."

Told that team officials say the Penguins' only chance of staying in Pittsburgh is a new building, Baldwin said, "You're not talking to them now. You're talking to me. I've never believed a new arena will solve all of the problems. Look at Kevin McClatchy. How much did the Pirates' attendance drop off from year one to year two at their new ballpark?

    - "I just hope that everyone back there -- the mayor and the politicians -- gets behind Mario. The hockey fans there deserve it. They probably don't think much of me, but they're great fans."

It's no wonder Baldwin is rooting so hard for the Penguins.

If they don't make it, his fingerprints will be all over the corpse.

Again, I'm sorry I cannot UNSEE nor UNLEARN that!

IMO, I don't think the Pens will do the blue uniforms anytime soon, just because of all the bad things that happened with them last time.

And you don't think the pigeon logo hasn't had Bad Stuff happen or attached to it (cough cough howard baldwin cough cough). That's why many Pittsburghers loathe that pos garbage logo. The logo itself would have been fine had baldwin waited 10 years to change it or if Lemieux had taken Ownership and then changed it...ok cool! But the logo change paired with Everything that happened to the Pens after that / during baldwins reign, not a good combination

I feel like my distaste for the Flyers nameplates is unpopular.  They look cheap to me and the Flyers uniforms look like the 1970s decade from which they came...it feels like the 1980s version was a proper modernization of that look. Pictured below is my favorite Flyers jersey ever.  Probably not a popular opinion.

    s71vhuhjlibea5mikfccwf8b4.gif

HOWEVER, I guess the current Flyers uniform caused me to have a Manela effect. I would have bet anything the contrasting nameplatae was taken right from the 1970s.  The mothership seems to show that they did NOT have contrasting nameplates in the 1970s.

    Philadelphia Flyers (1973 - 1977)

That said, the current trim is based off of the 1970s and the sleeve numbers hanging off of the orange onto the white looks cheap to me as well.  I think they got it right in the 1980s.

I have a love / hate relationship with the '80s Flyers uniform. I Love the way it looks, it's my favorite of their uniforms, to me That look is the Flyers. Hate comes from the fact that I am on the West side of Pa  LOL! Actually Rick Tocchet and Tim Kerr were my favorite non Pens players

So did I, and I think the logo looks perfectly fine. Do the Islanders need to change their logo just because it's old and I have no context for their dynasty since I grew up seeing them as a punchline? No, because that's the logo that's associated with 4 straight Stanley Cups and some of the best players to ever skate at that time, like Bossy, Trottier, Goring and the like. Same with the Oilers; that logo saw 5 Cups, and probably would've saw a sixth had Roloson not gotten injured in 2006.

The Oilers' logo has remained virtually the same for 47 years and counting. It's been worn by legends like Gretzky, Kurri, Coffey, Fuhr, Messier and Anderson to nearly-unparalleled success, and I'd much rather they stick to that tradition than redesign into some kind of silly oil worker logo or go minimalist and completely botch it. We don't need the Oilers going down the road of the Bengals by massively oversimplifying their logo.

There's value in tradition. The Flyers have never changed their logo, do we need them to make some dumb modernized version of their logo as the new primary just to say they're "in the 21st century now"?

Thank You, Well spoke! You can go back through time (all sports) and see how many Teams have rarely if ever have changed logos or even altered those logos.
Montreal Canadiens, NY Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh Steelers (yinzers would burn the City down to the ground if the Steelers ever changed or messed with their logo)

The Seth McFarlane Edmonton Oilers jerseys from the 2000s are my favorite look for the Oilers. They should have used the Flying Oil Drop alt full-time and get a matching white for this:

Only thing I didn't like about this look was the color scheme. The Gretzky era are still my favorite Oilers look but if you made this in Royal Blue and Orange

I'd hate the Grays going to DC as the Washington baseball name because I strongly feel that name belongs to Homestead/Pittsburgh more than it does DC

I'll take it a step further and say anyone that's currently utilizing a light blue jersey should make it the main road jerseys. I'm just not a fan of road grays in baseball, I think they're the most boring in all of sports (sacrilegious, I know)

I agree! I'm tired of all the Road Teams looking the same. I grew up in the 80s, some really good Road uniforms in that era

There may be a franchise in the big 4 of sports that has historically had management bumble their way through but none do it better than the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes of Glendale.

Not sure if this qualifies but early Pittsburgh Penguins. Late 60s, 70s up until drafting Lemieux. Traded away #1 picks for aging Vets (aka Hockey Card players), being beaten out Attendance wise by the Pittsburgh Spirit (M.I.L.S), 1st Bankruptcy.

Also like to include the 90s (specifically the howard baldwin years). Failure to jump on the Plan B Initiative (with the Pirates and Steelers) to get a New Arena. Selling off the Pens / Franchise rights to non Hockey Concessions and Parking revenue (Pens got all the Parking / Concessions revenue generated by non Hockey events such as: Concerts, WWF, monster Jam, etc. Overpaying Vet players when they didn't have the money to do so (Ego is writing checks the Franchise didn't have sorta thing)(me thinks that Non Hockey Revenue might have come in handy when paying the Players). 2nd Bankruptcy

As someone who's from Calgary and lives in Edmonton for school, I (and a bunch of other Albertans) already kind of knew that some of this was going to be the case. Some of the promo videos showed the mountains and Edmonton isn't part of the mountains, if it was a Calgary bubble than the mountains could be a possibility, but not Edmonton. The Toronto bubble also always seemed to be the better of the two and the comments here now looks to show that. I have not gotten around to driving up to the arena and bubble to see it for myself but maybe I should make the time to after this article.

I know some Edmonton teams went to the Rec Room, which I would describe as a more upscale Dave & Busters (as someone who hasn't been to a Dave & Busters), but that's a 20-ish minute drive away and I only saw video evidence of two teams going there and it probably was just for an afternoon.

There was also a little noise that players were ready to complain about the amenities right when they got to the bubbles, but then they (or their agents) saw what was being said about the NBA players complaining about that bubble (as seen here in this thread) and nixed it.

So this kind of thing has come up many times about the NHL and NBA players in the bubbles.

Is there a personal wealth or privilege threshold that we as a society have decided that when broken by a person, they are not allowed to complain about anything anymore?

With the NHL bubbles, specifically the Edmonton one, it's clear that the NHL overpromised (and underdelivered) at best and straight up lied at worst about what the players would be able to do and be able to have. They've been locked in and isolated for two months now, I know that if I was a player, I would be having mental and emotional health issues with the bubble.

I could also say that I'm tired of people like you complaining about hockey players complaining, when you are so entitled because you have internet access and the ability to watch hockey when there are people in third world countries that will never get easy access to clean water in their life.

Everybody is privileged in some form or another and it becomes just a sad game of trying to reverse outdo each other and policing what can and cannot make other people sad or unhappy depending on their status.

Are there times when the sadness can be a bit much when you do consider the context? Yes.

Is it easier to just fallback on the money argument and post zombinelandwoodyharrelsonwipingtearswithmoney.gif to upvotes or retweets? Also yes.

Do I think it's right? No.

I agree with you to an extent! It's not so much these Athletes are complaining, it's (for me anyway) more that they act like we're living in the Stone Ages and Modern Technology doesn't exist

Bold - for almost 2 months PA Residents weren't allowed to leave their Houses (except to go to Store), I know in my community, the Karens were out in full force, if you tried to go for a walk around the local High School Football Field / Track, then they would shame you on social media for it. At least in the bubble they don't have friends / neighbors turning on them and trying to get them into trouble for being out and about.
Try being in the Military and on a 6 month Cruise (before modern technology like email, zoom, skype, texting) when a hand written letter took 10 Days just to reach it's destination and then waiting for a reply letter back. Hell, I'll take sitting in a Bubble with my Xbox, iPhone, Laptop, iPad, things so I can communicate with my Friends and Family on a second to second, minute to minute, hour to hour daily basis as opposed to sitting on a ship for 2 months, where communication is a hand written letter....that doesn't take a mental toll on a person?

Underline - Exactly, being that I was in Other Countries (while in the Navy, I see how other people live. We are very very fortunate to have the amenities / freedoms / luxuries that we enjoy while other parts of the world can't even afford basic human needs. Take Italy as an example, you have 3 generations of a family living in what is a standard 2 bedroom Apt (here in the States). Egypt, children were sent to the docks to peddle homemade wares for money because their family is so poor and living in a single room shanty. Everyone knows the hardships of Ethiopia and such so don't need to go there

Italicized - My wife is a Social Worker and we see this a lot. Her one family is a family of 11, they cannot afford $20 Discounted tickets to Kennywood Park while  (and we see this because we belong to many different Disney sites) there are people complaining about their Annual Disney Pass going up in price

I have spent the last 2 weeks scrambling like a chicken with it's head cut off trying to secure a job for myself so I can help support my Family, problem is, a lot of places are coming off of a Hiring Freeze and now have a crap ton of people (whom lost their jobs thanks to covid) vying for the same 2,3 jobs. So please spare me the song and dance act. Tuukka Rask left the Bubble, other players could do the same

to add to this, ok so the Bubble isn't all Rainbows and Unicorns full of Fun stuff to do, try doing a 6 moth tour of duty on a Naval Ship during a time of unrest (my first Med Cruise was Nov '91, tensions were still high after the Gulf War), doing nothing but circles in the Adriatic Sea waiting for something to happen. Waaa Waaa we can't fly fish, we cannot golf (because ya know, a lot of the peasant golf courses aren't open either or open on a Limited Basis so the peasants cannot golf every hour of every day either)

The  cost of contracting four teams would be huge, wouldn't it? Wouldn't all the teams basically have to but the contracting teams out?

Wouldn't 'suspending operations' be more apt, letting the owners still 'hold the team' for some time without fielding a team before just selling the franchise to another billionaire or folding as a last resort?

Is the NHL (and major sports in general) just an operation that is too big to fail or is bankruptcy and vanishing franchises a reality?

Would the Players Union have any input on that as well?

Controversial Pick: Eliminates the unnecessary piping, gives them back a classic hem stripe, and keeps the wordmark look similar to what they won the Stanley Cup in since it seems they're reluctant to create a Weagle set.

I love the Jets heritage jerseys in navy, just wish that their C's would have a white outline on the home and their away would be blue with a red outine. Finally, I agree that "It should always be Christmas in New Jersey" and the Kachina gets a white counterpart.

    Capitals - YES
Jets - YES (but would like it in the Selanne era color scheme)

Totally agree on you, I think the only thing that would be better would be if the bottom side of the pentagon flattened out with the side of the jersey.

Problem I have with the Adidas rounded collars is the fact that a round collar doesn't make for a good for ties. The ties on a v-neck jersey made sense, the ties on this rounded collar is just stupid

  18. 9 hours ago, chcarlson23 said:

Well I mean the Penguins wear black at home, and like the Penguins having a brighter yellow to off-set, if the Islanders went to a bright shade of orange, it would contrast really well with the navy. And the current design would be a better look too, with the extra white.

Unfortunately the Oilers are already back to navy and orange...

The Islanders also are a few tweaks away from having one of the best home looks in the NHL. That stupid toilet bowl plus orange pentagon on the collar is trash. A full collar would look much better. And the stripes need to be more consistent from the hips down. The breezers stripes don’t match anything, and the home socks are a recolored mismatch from the navy Edge set... They need to fix those. Match them to the roads, or have them match the jerseys like the Sound Tigers do.

I absolutely HATE the Adidas collars

I don't necessarily mind their currently identity, but I think the Islanders would look better if they used a darker shade of blue like the one in the picture below. (I'm not saying they should go back to those exact jerseys, just use that blue in their current set.)spacer.png

My thing is, it's 2020. Games are broadcast in HD, we sit in our Homes and watch these HD Games on our HDTVs. Brighter Colors POP on an HDTV. Royal Blue and Orange POP more than Navy Blue (US Navy Dress Blues almost look black, a Police Officers Navy Blue uniform looks almost black). Maybe it's just me but I don't understand the fascination with dark (Navy Blue, Dark Red, Dark Green) drab colors in a HD World

I miss stadiums without giant video boards. They take away from the experience of being present at the event. So many people end up watching the game on the big screen rather than the action on the field below. To me this is all about the concept of being in the present moment, rather than a distaste of technology. I understand that people want the best view or whatever, but I like the idea of just being present in the moment.

I miss the days when simply being at a game was the whole experience. Now we have a giant screen to distract us momentarily from the little screens in our hands, all while the action is taking place right in front of us. I know it's way too late to ever return to such a time, but I wish we could just appreciate experiencing a live game without giant video boards.

A friggin MEN!  It's well known on this board my wishes to go back to a simpler Game Day Experience

  22. At least here in Pittsburgh / Western Pa area

    - Quiznos - shame because I really liked their prime rib (I think there may be 1 or 2 at the Rest Stops on the PA Turnpike)

Krispy Kreme - Liked them but I think they oversaturated the area to quickly, seemed like every few days a neighborhood was getting a Krispy Kreme. The West Mifflin Krispy Kreme was turned into a Chick Fil A, which is booming (always jam packed)

I know there are some still around (Robinson Town Center, Pittsburgh Int'l Airport, Cedar Point) but I would add
    - Quaker Steak & Lube (Episode of Man vs Food), many years QSL was the place to go for Wings but once Buffalo Wild Wings moved in as competition, QSL lost big. I know here in West Mifflin, QSL is now a Texas Roadhouse and like the Chick Fil A (always jam packed). Buffalo Wild Wings is right up the Street
