  1. Something that was perhaps missed in the Saints reveal that really really bothers me.

It's 2022 and the Saints STILL cannot, for the life of them, get their gold tones to match across the uniform.

I get it...metallics are difficult to match...but we have seen other colleges and pro teams match or get metallics to a decent matching level.

First kit tease from the Timbers - looks like a muted pink/rose base with a dark red rose design. I 100% want to see a yellow kit in the future, but some sort of pink Rose City Red-themed design was the other option that has been speculated on for some time and I am not mad about it at all. Excited to see the full thing.

Whoa....am I seeing that correctly? Have they sublimated a large rose on their jersey?

The only time they'd really need a change kit is vs Nashville. I'd love to see all three kits in use, just because it makes sense to have the black jersey on hand just in case.

...just so long as one of those kits isn't akin to those dreadful "city flag" inspired kits they had a few years back. :)

From Old Hat's Indiana State case study:

"One thing we learned at the outset was that the outline of the state of Indiana was a pride point that absolutely had to be carried over to the new identity. From athletics staff to alumni, there was no desire to move away to a mark that represented the Sycamores in a different way (i.e. sycamore leaf, mascot mark, etc.)."

....as an alum...I simply find that case study result hard to accept.

The primary logo they chose does not seem to lineup with the look and feel of the (decent) secondary marks they unveiled. There are some really nice options in that secondary set. Hell, I'd even take the new "IS" logo inside the state if the State didn't look like my 6 year old cut it out with safety scissors.

*edit* those leaf logos were rejected? Oh sweet lawd Jesus that's a tragedy.

  5. The center "stripes" of the Carolina Panthers helmet have never set right with me. There are no elements of those weird stripes anywhere else on the jersey through the course of the team's uniform history....and the fact that both "swipes" come so close to the main helmet decal near the back really irk me.

...and the 2 navy blue "spikes" on the old Titans helmet always bugged me as well...again...the spikes were nowhere else in the uniform.

Type is ok, the rest looks like an amateur concept for an energy drink.

So they're DePaul now? This is horrific.

Edit: the new logos are horrific...not your comment or opinion. I thought the logos would be quoted in my reply.

Cal U (California University of Pennsylvania, Division II) Vulcans revealed their new athletics logos yesterday.  Source

While they're not the only Vulcans in the NCAA, I think it's safe for them to brand under the name instead of Cal U which I'm sure many have confused with the state of California.

Having went to high school in PA, the fun fact here is that PA has a "Cal U" and an "Indiana (Pa) U". If you say that you went to "Cal" or "Indiana"...most natives immediately think you went to the Pa State school rather than thinking you're a Golden Bear or Hoosier.

  8. The NBA's introduction of, and subsequent allowance of otherwise "off-brand" jerseys for their respective teams - diverting away from just "home" and "away" denotations and the color schemes thereof - is a slippery slope of cash-grabbing brand dilution that is not unlike the jersey stunts we have seen in Minor League baseball.

    ...Change my mind.

I have a memory of Nebraska trying to replace the N with a bolder N with serifs and maybe a white/red double-outline.  But people went nuts and it did not end up happening.

When I was looking for that story, I found an equally amusing one on the below link. It says that the "NU" became an "N" when there were not enough "U" stickers around:

I realize this is off topic...but I love crazy facts like this. I'd love to see a "Crazy Sports Uniform/Logo Facts" thread with stuff like this...because I honestly had never heard that before.

I don't know where this fits, but it is college related so...

How about a conference making an identity change as the Division III Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference now becomes the American Rivers Conference

Hmm...interesting choice of names. An upgrade from the mouthful of a name that it had...but when I see "American Rivers" my first thought does not immediately go to "Iowa", y'know?

  11. Just noticing the Purdue Fort Wayne logo...

    Purdue-Fort-Wayne.jpg

According to P-FW...this logo continually came out as the top choice among focus groups. That Blue looks....really forced...with it just being a single stroke on the Mastadon. Not really digging the way the shade works with the Purdue black & gold. *cringe*

First, it's Cavalry, not Calvary. Those are two very different things.

Calgary Cavalry is an awful name, Cavalry FC is unique and interesting.

The crest was designed by Jon Rogers, who you may know as one of the hosts of the Footy Soldiers podcast. Here is some of his excellent design work: https://www.flickr.com/photos/112145297@N03/

I think this is bound to be one of the best CanPL identities.

No disrespect to the designer....as I know often times these things get squandered in a committee...but this just looks lazy. It's clip-artistic to an "nth" degree. It looks like 2 items from Flaticons.com pieced together.
