I find it more interesting that the left guys kit has the three stripes on it while Pele's kit has one thick stripe.

Probably because Pele was sponsored by Puma.

I'd bet that's why. It's also why Johan Cruyff wore only two stripes, rather than three, on his shirt and warm-up jacket during the 1974 World Cup:

By the way, the "other guy" in the Team USA jersey is West Ham legend Bobby Moore, who was then playing in the NASL. He and Pele are flanking Gerry Francis of QPR.

That image shows something which I really wish had caught on -- league all-star teams instead of national teams. A "Team USA" consisting of NASL players played against the English national team in 1976. I am a big fan of club football; but I dislike international football because it traffics in nationalism, which I despise. I do watch the World Cup and the Euros; and, because someone has to win, I root for England. But I don't feel good about these tournaments, as the flags make me ill.

On the other hand, if the teams participating were representing not countries but leagues, then I could fully get behind it. I'd rather watch a Premier League all-star team play a La Liga all-star team than watch England play Spain. The teams would of course consist of players of multiple nationalities; and these players would move from one league all-star team to another as they change leagues, just as baseball players move from the American League all-star team to the National League all-star team after they change leagues.

That would be the kind of World Cup that I would enjoy! There's be no minnows. Just sixteen all-star teams representing the best of the world's top leagues. In my fantasy scenario, there would be four groups, and each group would would contain a team from one of the major powers:

    Premier League (England)

    La Liga (Spain)

    Serie A (Italy)

    Bundesliga (Germany)

Then the other twelve teams would be apportioned to groups at random. If it were done right now, those other twelve teams might be:

    Ligue 1 (France)

    Eredivisie (Netherlands)

    Brasileirão (Brazil)

    Liga MX (Mexico)

    MLS (U.S. / Canada)

    Primera División (Argentina)

    Primeira Liga (Portugal)

    Championship (Russia)

    Scottish Professional Football League

    Belgian Pro League

    J-League (Japan)

    Super League (Switzerland)

The four major powers would have permanent spots. Qualifying matches would be played in the years before my fantasy World Cup to see which other twelve teams qualify.

Alas, this will never be. But it is one of the first things that I would bring into being as King of All Sports.

There's only one recognizable club in the SPL at the moment and even Celtic failed to qualify for Champions League this year. The All-Star team of Turkish or Ukrainian league should be much better.

  2. Some throwbacks returned in 2008, which was a correct choice for Eddie Johnson. B.J. Armstrong, however, left the Bulls before they introduced pinstripes. The Admiral was fine, Laimbeer again wearing modern uniform.

    2008.jpg

From 2009 only current uniforms were in use, which means wrong uniforms for Cooper and Laimbeer again. Majerle has worn it only for his last season.

    2009.jpg

2010: Brent Barry, Kenny Smith, Steve Smith, Chris Webber

    barry.jpgkenny.jpgsteve_smith.jpgwebber.jpg

2011: The Smiths again (Kerr and Fox are fine)

    2011.jpg

2012: The Smiths and Dennis Scott (Houston is fine)

    2012.jpg

In 2013 and 2014 there were no jerseys, just shooting shirts, which brings us to 2015: Nique, Penny, D. Curry (he stayed in a shooting shirt during the contest) and Pippen (fine).

  3. I would like to follow the approach taken by some posters, namely right team wrong uniform. And there is no better source of such pictures than the All-Star Weekend Shooting Stars contest when it comes to NBA. At the beginning I wanted to complain about the legends wearing former uniforms but while searching for the pictures from the early editions I realized that the things were wild from the very beginning.

In the first edition (2004) Magic, Kerr, Cummings and Salley wore uniforms that would have throwbacks while they played in the NBA (I would call them double throwbacks from this step on).

    2004.jpg2004_Magic.jpg

In 2005 Majerle, Dantley and English wore double throwbacks while Magic appeared in a current Lakers uniform.

    2005.jpg

In 2006 Kerr, Drexler and Majerle wore correct uniforms (by which I mean from the time period they actually played) but Magic stayed as the odd man out with the current jersey.

    2006.jpg

In 2007 all legends wore current uniforms, which makes it correct for Pippen only and wrong for Cooper, Gervin and Laimbeer

  4. The Bucks retired Bob Dandridge's #10 the other night

    B_ivxRmUcAAdnk8.jpg

I'm surprised they retired his number before Glenn Robinson's #13...I think the Big Dog did a LOT more for the franchise and its culture.

More than playing in three All-Star Games (1973, 1975, 1976) and starting at forward for a championship team (1971) and for another team that went to the Finals (1974)?

    Really?

I agree. The championships should matter the most for any franchise. However, as The Starters noticed someone should have checked baskteball reference before printing the banner because his second stint with Bucks was in 81-82.

BTW, anybody knows from which season is this uniform?

    dandridge_bucksbest_300x300.jpg

The mothership doesn't have any uniforms with the green script.

  5. I haven't seen this one posted...

Joe Johnson as a Boston Celtic:

Playing vs. other guys in wrong uniforms as well...

Crazy to think he was traded to Phoenix along with a first round pick to Phoenix for Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers. Just think, they could have had KG at center, Paul Pierce at small forward, Ray Allen at shooting guard, Rajon Rondo at point guard, and Joe Johnson at power forward. Granted Allen and Johnson are both SGs (putting him at the PF position wouldn't really work that well), and I doubt contract parameters would have allowed it.

They often had problems judging their talents. Despite failing to get Duncan, they still ended up with another future Finals MVP with the 3rd pick. However, they traded him in the middle of his rookie season and stayed with Antoine Walker for 6 years,

  6. Yeah, I thought about that, I think it should be team discretion. The big thing for me is that I don't like seeing one guy wearing white sleeves, another black, another gray, and one none at all. Nike should make matching undershirts for every team, whether or not the team wears them is up to them. Shoes, however, aren't a big deal to me. If Lynch wants to wear his Skittles shoes, and Newton wants to wear his Superman shoes, let them.

Shoes need to match more than sleeves do, and undershirt is just equiptment, cleats are something every player has to wear and should match atleast colorwise

I agree more with JRB14 but it probably stems from the fact that I'm used to soccer, where undershirts are a part of uniform and they should be in a matching colour while the shoes are left to player's choice.

  7. I know that most of the NFL season is played during autumn/winter but I believe it is warm enough in the southern states to play football in short-sleeve jerseys. You don't want the players to feel uncomfortably too warm.

I think there is a reason that the only major sport where long sleeves are standard is ice hockey.

  8. I also don't see it working. Long sleeves were abandoned in rugby as well. I was quite upset when I lost one of my old shirts for winter trainings because it's difficult to get them nowadays. But for the games I find the undershirt more useful as nobody can grab me by the sleeve.

  9. As good as the Boston Celtics uniforms look, I wouldn't mind it if they used gold as an accent color. Not only would it work with the Irish motif, but it would be a nice tribute to their championship legacy.

Gold would be better than the black they use in their alts.

No doubt. Heck, they have gold in their logo. Either use that shade or lighten it up a bit and use it.

You guys are talking about this as if they've never worn these

I have seen those and I wish they'd wear them more often. I'd ditch the green and black personally.

Unfortunately, they are going to be replaced by those

  10. Lots of teams used throwback unis to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the NBA - at the time, a big deal was made about how it was the first time the NBA was using throwback uniforms, although teams had been doing it for one-off games going back to 1992 (I have a full list of games if anyone wants it).

I would be interested. If the list is too long, could you send me a PM?

  11. It would seem like a lot of these occur in the NBA, as relocations seemed to almost always come in twos:

1962 - Philadelphia Warriors to San Franscico Warriors

    1963 - Syracuse Nationals to Philadelphia 76ers

Any matchup between the San Francisco Warriors and Syracuse Nationals was a one-season deal.

1971 - San Diego Rockets to Houston Rockets

1972 - Cincinnati Royals to Kansas City(-Omaha) Kings

Any matchup between the Houston Rockets and Cincinnati Royals was a one-season deal.

1978 - Buffalo Braves to San Diego Clippers

1979 - New Orleans Jazz to Utah Jazz

Any matchup between the San Diego Clippers and New Orleans Jazz was a one-season deal. I was at one of those (the New Orleans home game) and remember it well. We had floor seats behind the basket. My stepdad was heckling Lloyd Free all night (this was before he changed his name to "World B. Free"). At one point Free made a basket (on our end of the court) and looked straight at my stepdad, then turning down court “shot him the bird” behind his back while he hustled back on defense.

1984 - San Diego Clippers to L.A. Clippers

1985 - Kansas City Kings to Sacamento Kings

Any matchup between the L.A. Clippers and Kansas City Kings was a one-season deal

2001 - Vancouver Grizzlies to Memphis Grizzlies

2002 - Charlotte Hornets to New Orleans Hornets

Any matchup between the Memphis Grizzlies and (original) Charlotte Hornets was a one-season deal

2012 - New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn Nets

2013 - New Orleans Hornets to New Orleans Pelicans

Only 2 matchups between the Brooklyn Nets and New Orleans Hornets. No indication in the photo, but I made a point of being at that game:

    Brooklyn.jpg

Also, not in the "group of twos" scenario, but any team vs.the Chicago Packers (named that for 1 season only, 1961-62) or Chicago Zephyrs (renamed that for only season, 1962-63) were rare matchups. They became the Baltimore Bullets, and after ten years moved to the Capital Centre and changed their name to the Capital Bullets for only one season (1973-74), so any NBA team matchup against the Capital Bullets is rare. There was also only one season of matchups between the Baltimore Bullets and Kansas City-Omaha Kings.

Any NBA team playing the New York Nets only did so for one season (1976-77) as they entered the NBA from the ABA that season, then became the New Jersey Nets in the fall of 1977. With Buffalo's move to San Diego in 1978, that also means that the Buffalo Braves and New Jersey Nets only met for one season.

I managed to find some of them

  12. Right... I think Ray Allen is a player who has multiple right uniforms.

Same here, I always think of Ray Allen as a Buck or Sonic, then maybe a Celtic, because he did good with all those teams. At the moment he looks wrong in a Heat jersey, but one day that might look right.

Ray Allen not in green is his wrong uniform in my opinion. He wore green for the first 3 teams he played for.

Not really. Bucks hardly wore green green uniforms during when Ray was around. They were predominately a purple team.
