I remember seeing this concept on the nhluniforms Facebook page and was really hoping it would be that instead of the lame and ugly one they ended up with

This is basically Chicago's road jersey with red numbers and the black stripes extended to the end of the sleeves/hem.

The Adidas red jersey is miles ahead of the pre-Edge or Edge reds and if they'd just used a matching white version, the Hurricanes would've had their best set by far with the caveat that they should've changed the font. A non-italic version of the original font would be best.

The Adidas jersey was a big improvement over the Team Canada rip offs they had before, but the lack of silver & the barely noticeable flag pattern make it worse than the originals.

I don’t know anything about Phoenix, but just from fooling around on Google Maps, this seems like a terrible spot for an arena. This is still far from the population center, just in a different direction now.

(Yes, I know there is basically no chance anything happens with this attempt either.)

It seems like it's worse than the proposed Tempe site, but not as bad as Glendale. For most of the fanbase that's in the East Valley they'd still have a decent drive, but they at least wouldn't have to drive through central Phoenix. North Scottsdale is also one of the richest areas of Phoenix, which doesn't hurt.

And also, not that this next part really means anything in the grand scheme of things, considering past uniform designs, but the total lack of a single semblance of anything "H-Town Blue" in these leaks now really has me wondering a/ if it will show up on the home sets and/or b/ exactly how it will show up period.

The leaked description of the full set did mention that not every uniform incorporated the luv ya blue, so this lines up with that.

-unfortunately, no map of Canada, It would be interesting to see Montreal.

As someone who was raised as an Expos fan until they left, I didn't really fully commit to becoming a Jays fan until I moved to Toronto ~8 years ago. Ottawa was home to the Expos AAA affiliate, and they managed to stick around for a few more years after Montreal lost the team, so I briefly tried following some new teams based on who Ottawa was farming for (Baltimore for a couple years, Philly for one season). 2015 felt like the time people outside of Southern Ontario started getting more invested in the team (ending a 21 year playoff drought will do that).

I think the Jays having Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has helped bridge the gap a bit. I'm too young to remember the Expos ever being good, but Vladdy Sr. was the biggest name they had towards the end.

This is just a ridiculous statement. Football helmets have chinstraps too. The facemask is a focal point of the thing that fans identify most with a football team. Clearly there's a difference between these two helmets (You can come to your own conclusion on one looks better):

Los Angeles Chargers 53-man roster cuts tracker 2019: Live updates

I mean there's also clearly a difference between these two helmets (one obviously looks better than the other):

Would a team like the 49ers look better with a red facemask instead of grey? Sure, but when I'm watching a football game the facemask colour isn't as noticeable as the helmets/pants are in a hockey game. If it helps, I was glad to see the Giants ditch the grey pants a couple years ago.

If this is your belief I certainly hope you a against teams like the Cleveland Brown in the NFL wearing grey facemasks!!!

A facemask in football is like the chin strap of a hockey helmet. Do you ever hear people complaining about teams like the Habs or Rangers having black chin straps on their helmets?

  8. Icethetics has just posted a preview of the Fanatics changes for next year & beyond:

Not a whole lot of breaking revelations, but here are some highlights:

    • The practice jersey template is changing. Obviously the 3 stripes along the sides have been removed, and the Fanatics logo is replacing the Adidas one on the chest. The dimples on the shoulders may be gone (this is based on a digital rendering), and the pentagon shaped panel on the collar is gone as well. The standard roundel on the front of the practice jerseys is being tweaked, and will now be stitched instead of heat-pressed.
    • Contrary to what's been said, teams will still have third jerseys next season, there just won't be any new ones. They mention teams like San Jose and Tampa keeping their black thirds around.
    • Aside from Boston returning to their pre-centennial uniforms, there's no mention of any other teams changing their primary look

I hate the use of the term "rebuild" in sports - especially for when a team has sucked forever.  You're not "rebuilding", you're just "building".  To "re" build, you have to have been built, and too often, the term is used for teams that were never good.

To me, it means that your team was great, but now has some aging superstars that you want to trade a year early rather than a year late (or just on time), knowing that you may take a step back.  A "rebuild" shouldn't be used for any team that's hit Rock Bottom (I expect a C&D from The Rock for that.)

"Rebuild" has just become a buzzword organizations use to buy themselves time. Executives don't have to face any consequences for their team's poor play because they're "rebuilding" which means we can't judge them for at least 3-5 years.

It feels like a symptom of the ring chasing culture that's taken over pro sports, mainly due to social media. Obviously a championship is the ultimate goal for every sports fan, but we've gotten to a point where we can't celebrate any other accomplishments. Fans demand their favourite team rebuild at the first sign of trouble, without realizing that it means being terrible for a while without any guarantee of success. You're just as likely to end up being the next Detroit Pistons as you are the OKC Thunder. And even if you do execute a successful rebuild, you might just be a perennial playoff team that still can't win it all (i.e. the 76ers).

Yikes. I get that no one likes ads on uniforms, but do we need to be this cynical?

For a startup league like the PWHL, jersey ads are a necessary evil. Molson could've easily just purchased the real estate below the number and slapped their logo there, but they found a much more creative way to activate the sponsorship. Yes, this helps them gain some positive PR, but we should appreciate that they put some effort into making the campaign about more than just their company.

Both Avalanche original home and roads contain black so this point holds no water.  Primary logo does too.

Where do you see any black on this jersey? The black names & numbers never made sense on the white jersey, and were basically thrown on there to justify the black equipment. And about a third of the teams in the league have a colour in their logo that doesn't appear anywhere else in their uniforms, so wearing black pants because of a tiny black puck covered in snow seems like a stretch.

Who's advocating the Red Wings or Canadiens start wearing black pants?  Neither of them use it on their uniforms or logos so of course it would clash.

You yourself said that black is neutral, and that black equipment shouldn't factor into a team's colour hierarchy.

Here's the thing people tend to overlook about black on sports uniforms...  Neither black nor white are technically colours.  They are neutral shades.  Putting the black equipment in the colour hierarchy of this uniform is like doing the same with the white uniform base.

Wearing black equipment with a uniform that doesn't have any black in it looks amateur. It's like seeing a minor hockey team where every kid just has basic black pants regardless of what colour their jersey is. If the Red Wings or Canadiens started wearing black pants would that not clash with their uniforms?

If they were going to keep the black equipment, it would have worked better if they eliminated silver altogether, like they did with this alternate.

They're still using all those colours anyways.  It's not as if black is completely absent from the uniform.

They really aren't using black anymore. Yes it's used sparingly in the logos, but it's no different than how Chicago uses green & yellow.

With the pre-Edge set, the colour balances were different between the two main jerseys. The dark jersey was burgundy/blue/black/white, while the light jersey was white/burgundy/silver/blue. The black equipment made some sense with the burgundy jersey, but looked out of place with the white jersey (especially if you saw one without numbers). It's similar to how the Golden Knights improved their road uniform by switching the black pants to grey.

It's been 4 seasons and I still absolutely loathe the Avalanche in blue equipment.  Championship or not, it still looks awful.

The original uniforms were designed for Blue to be the secondary colour and for blue and burgundy to never touch...  Yet this idiotic decision breaks both of those rules.  It looks the worst at home where the blue completely overpowers the burgundy base.

It's time for the Avalanche to bring back the uniforms that hoisted the cup in 2001...  The colours were properly balanced, the numbers were more legible, the mountain striping looked better and the footprint shoulder patches actually matched the art style of the primary logo.  Everything about that set is superior to the dogs dinner they have now.  Bring back the original set, keep the navy alternate and don't change anything again.

Blue might've been the secondary colour on the burgundy jerseys, but not the white jerseys. They had burgundy sleeves, black numbers/names, and black pants. Blue was basically used equally with silver on the white uniform, while the burgundy used hardly any silver altogether. It was clear that they were using one too many colours, and needed to decide between silver & black.

The current set could use some tweaks, but I wouldn't say it looks awful. As mentioned above, adding a blue stripe along the sleeves of the road jersey would go a long way, as would more consistency with the numbers. Currently they use white numbers outlined in silver on the back of the burgundy jersey, but use white numbers outlined in blue on the burgundy sleeves.

Fair point. I'd also count the Washington Capitals as a team that has continued to stick with navy (as their secondary color).

That's true. Although I don't mind them sticking with navy as it helps differentiate them from Montreal a bit more.

I don't live in Canada and don't know anyone who does, so my knowledge of whatever goes on up there is limited to whatever I happen to stumble across either here or on sites like reddit, which could be ChatGPT bots for all I know. But it seems like standard of living isn't great up there right now, by North American standards. And Winnipeg apparently has never been particularly strong in that regard anyway. So people probably just can't afford the price point they're insisting on. The lowest available ticket price being almost double that of the Blue Bombers is silly.

CFL tickets being significantly cheaper than NHL tickets is pretty standard up here, and the Jets have the 2nd lowest ticket prices in the country. Their arena is the smallest in the league, so they do have to charge a little more to make up for the lower overall attendance.

As a small market team, Winnipeg has relied heavily on their season ticket base to keep the building full. It sounds like a lot of their previous season ticket sales were to groups of people who shared them for the year, but when one person in that group suddenly can't afford their portion you lose the entire group. It also feels like the organization took the fans for granted, and weren't providing any sort of proper service to retain clients (as others have mentioned).

And what product? Kevin Cheveldayoff has been overseeing a rebuild that's been going on since the release of the iPad and has failed to build a team that's reliably in the conversation every single year nor a team that picks a few years to go all-in. I don't think that's because Winnipeg is scary, it's just years' worth of insufficient drafting/development, which, under guaranteed payouts and a hard cap, any organization anywhere needs to get right.

I'm not sure if you've been seeing the standings this year, but the Jets are first in their division and top 5 in the league overall. No front office is perfect, but Cheveldayoff managed to get long term commitments from key pieces. He also managed to effectively navigate having 2 elite young players who had no interest in playing there.

Navy blue is also way overdone though. One of the most enduring consequences of 90s/00s sports design has been teams replacing their classic royal blue color schemes with duller navy blue.

Great rebrand overall, though. Did a great job of creating a simple, bold design without slipping into the oversimplification that plagued the Jazz rebrand.

But most of the teams who switched to navy in the 90s/00s have since gone back to their royal roots. The Brewers, Patriots, and Seahawks are pretty much the only team who have stuck with it.

Ah ok. Yes, I'd love to see the 2nd generation purple brought back. It's probably my favourite of any uniform they've worn. The earned jersey from a couple of years ago definitely took some inspiration from it, but came across as a bland mashup of the purple era & the current chevron era.

2025 will be 25th anniversary of that legendary SDC, so let's do it and finally retire Vince number.

I'm not expecting any serious changes. The team seems pretty committed to red/white/black as the primary colour scheme, while keeping the purple and black/gold in the mix via the city/earned/throwback jerseys.

As for Vince's number, I feel like fans have mostly moved on after his messy exit and his number will likely be in the rafters at some point, but they want Kyle Lowry to be the first guy. Once 7 has been retired we'll see who else gets the honour.

Speaking of the Stadium Series, i wonder what kind of atrocities they have in store for the Jackets next year.

A graphic that shows the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets logos on the videoboard at Ohio Stadium with the seating and field in view. Two legs, one belonging to a Red Wings player and one belonging to a Blue Jackets player, appear in the foreground. The NHL logo is above white text that reads "Stadium Series" followed by red text that reads "Ohio Stadium. 2025". The Navy Federal Credit Union logo is below this.

I'm guessing they go with some sort of oversized cannon logo, and maybe silver helmets to tie in the Buckeyes connection. Would be great to see Detroit wear a red & white version of the classic Michigan helmet.

    1 hour ago, tigerslionspistonshabs said:

No one cares about the Blue Jackets. Why is it in Columbus?

There really is no pleasing hockey fans. When Chicago got announced as the Winter Classic host everyone complained about them being in an outdoor game again. When a team that's never played in an outdoor game gets to host, people find a way to complain about that too.

Columbus has managed pretty consistent attendance & fan support during their history, which is impressive considering how terrible they've been for almost their entire existence. It's a somewhat traditional hockey market, and the horseshoe is one of the most iconic stadiums in college football.
