I mean when gambling was illegal, people would be less likely to know about gambling and how to access it.

Do you also think narcotics should be made legal, so many people would be  more likely to know about helplines or treatment options that are available to them.

Yeah, lots of people didn't know what gambling was.  LOL.  Ever hear of numbers running?  Maybe not in podunk towns (but even then), everybody that wanted to had a guy.  And if you think anyone  outside of the back woodisiest of back woods places didn't either know what gambling was or how to do it, that's just... something.

The narcotics point is much more complicated and I'm not sure we can have that discussion with mods shutting this part of the discussion down.

Again, we're way off topic now so I'm preemptively moving on before we're rightly told to by the mods.  Feel free to have the last word.

Pants stripes (discounting lightning bolts or some other graphic design) need to go the full length of the pants  from top to bottom.  When they don’t, they suck.

There are no exceptions to this rule.

Depends on what you consider the Panthers.  Their pants stripe is fine.  It technically touches the bottom.  Other gimmicky stripes do suck.  There's plenty of ways for a team to go contemporary without coming up with harry high-school trash like the Titans.

I'm not necessarily a traditionalist, but there's a certain "framework" within which NFL designs should live.  It's fine to push the boundaries of said framework, but breaking them reduces the league to nothing but a higher-level amateur league that doesn't give af about branding, identities, tradition, or connection with anything but the youngest generation of its fans.

Even some of the Texans gimmicky stuff falls within the framework, albeit near the boundary.  but some is outside of it, which doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, but it's bad for an NFL uniform.

Not every team needs to look like the Steelers or Raiders or Chiefs.  It would suck if every team did.  But at the highest level, you can wear a slim-cut suit with a fancy lapel, fancy shoes, cool socks, and maybe a flashy tie to the board meeting, but at the end of the day it's still a professional suit (that pushes the boundaries of what's acceptable for that situation, but still falls within it.). Not everyone needs to look like the old-stodgy white CEO in his Brooks Brothers suit.

    Still suits:

Different than the traditional, but still within the established framework (at the edges of it, but on the safe side).  They can still sit at the same table with...

    Chiefs, Steelers, Raiders, et al:

These can coexist in the same NFL board room.  On the other hand... GTFO with this nonsense.  Go to the AFL or... hell.

  4. That's so weird.  So he keeps a franchise certificate, but can't use it to actually run a franchise (or if he wanted to, the league wouldn't give him players, the union would prohibit anyone from signing with him, and the league wouldn't add them to the schedule.)

But... he technically remains an owner - so what, does he attend owners' meetings?  Does the lineage die in 5 years?  Questions.  I have questions.

And the Eagles have had giant bird wings on their helmets forever. Just because it doesn't look good, pointing at the Titans, doesn't make it any less professional. It's a sports league meant to entertain. Just because its not the 60s anymore and every team isn't wearing some variety of stripes doesn't mean a team can't branch out to explore new ways to express their brand.

They could put the horn on their helmet and make that their look, rather than it be part of many looks.

They don’t need to double down by also having bull horns on the jerseys… which are actually backwards from the ones in the helmet - that looks ridiculous.

Nothing wrong with trying new things - but commit to it. For better or for worse, make it your brand. Don’t have a different look for every day of the week because you’re afraid of commitment. They no longer have a brand.

Really? Seems odd to me that Harper would be storing his own uniforms. There's a whole staff of clubhouse employees in charge of that. I wouldn't think players ever have to even think about storing their uniforms, at least no in this era. Maybe decades ago but not these day. And in a new season you'd figure the entire stock of uniforms is from this year.

Maybe it was one of the game-worn ones that they auction off in the stadium and he bought it so he could wear it again.

I need to know how this is even possible, like how was there even a 2023 jersey available in the clubhouse for this to happen? And was this a mistake by him or did he know what he was doing?

I imagine he kept a few of last years, and other guys probably did too. I don’t think that’s too uncommon for guys who know they’ll be back, and may have caught wind of the changes and not liked it.

Aaron Nola wore pre-NewEra logo era Low Profile 59Fiftys for a season or two after the hats were replaced. I just assume he had a bunch saved for some reason (not that the changes to the caps were anything at all like the changes to the unis)

If you didn't mind the low profile fit, the batting practice style and one of these is your size it might be as close as you get without paying eBay prices. Just thought I'd share.

I have a 39thirty that looks identical the low-pros that some of the players were wearing, with the exception of the wordmark on the back instead of batterman.

In case you missed the logo on our helmet, check the sleeve.

I thought this kind of assery was in the past.

probably more geared towards fan jerseys since the previous ones, despite having the wordmark, didn’t have any other branding marks. I’m not a fan, but I kinda get it.

I had forgotten the Jaguars briefly had striped black pants before going all leotard. If the '98 throwbacks got made permanent, I wouldn't be averse.

I loved those as an alt. They looked excellent in night games.

    Happy Birthday, Jack!

On another note, how would a medium royal blue have worked for the Broncos (e.g., Giants and Bills)? I think it would've been a nice balance and fit the color scheme a lot more than the starker navy or the "soft" light royal.

I like that idea. Especially with the type of paint job they use, since it’d be dark anyway most of the time, but lighter some of it.

I like the Denver uniforms. A lot better than those Reebok side panels. The triangles are gimmicky but not that noticeable. I’m surprised they’re getting so much hate.

The side panels were a Nike creation.

  12. If a team has nine looks, then it doesn’t have two.  While overall each look seems (based on the 1 minute I spent looking) fine, it’ll be a mess trying to instantly identify them in short clips.

also… as others have pointed out, THE CHARGERS SLEEVES.

I want these Giants 1930's throwbacks so damned bad...

When I was like 13 in 1990ish, doing pencil-and-paper concepts for a fictitious league, my New York team (I think they were the Brigade for some reason) looked almost exactly like that (and I obviously didn't have the ability to research any throwbacks unless they were in the NFL History books that I'd borrow from the school library.). Glad to see that it could soon become a real thing!

  14. I always thought that the front was pointed so that it didn't "block" the front of the horse head.

The cyber-horse logo is too long to have to compete with a stripe for space.  Really hoping the stupid-ass triangles gimmick thing is a troll job by someone and not something we're actually going to see.

Phil’s recent Nike pieces mentioned that Laurie considered changing uniforms, shooting a hole in that longstanding rumor that Lurie would never change.

Paul's  piece.  But that part was interesting for two reasons.

    1. the timing.  He said 2015 or 2016, which kindasorta lines up with when they started lobbying for the kelly green helmet to "test" a return to the color by first using it as an alt.   The story says that Lurie got cold feet and thought he should just keep the current uniform, which validates his desire to "test" it first.

    2. after he nixed the redesign, he asked for "just give me some cool pants stripes, something that's never been done" (paraphrasing.). The proposals that were shown in the article were rather tame, but Lurie just swiped left.

As for a rumor that he'd "never change", that's simply not true.   He's flat out said that he'd consider it.  But they're very conservative and brand conscious and aren't going to make any decision that's not very well thought out (note - I didn't say well executed, just well thought out.)

*the wordmark fiasco would seem to run contrary to what I just said, since it wasn't timed right to get on the uniform in time, though we don't know the fully story there (like, maybe they were told it was minor enough to not require 2 years, or something like that.)

I’m honestly really excited for the Texans reveal. It’s been a while since we’ve had a team come up with something new and more “out there” compared to the recent simplifying or throwback looks.

Given that the last times teams went "out there" we ended up with the Titans and Falcons, I'll gladly take throwbacks, even if that's not usually my preference.

Moving a stadium to the suburbs isn't the same as losing the team to another city.

In some cases it could be just as bad for the fan base and former-host-city.  Our city-wage tax is 4%, so even if the athletes don't live in the city, they're still paying that for practicing and playing here.  That's not nothing (plus the revenue the city gets for fan-related things.). Also in areas so dependent on transit, a move to the suburbs could potentially make games inaccessible (or at least much more difficult to access) for people.

I just think if those cities need domes, then they should be forced open for the majority of the time, unless conditions are such that the athletes are at heightened risk for injury.  Build them in a way that the fans are mostly protected from rain, and keep them open.

Every mid-atlantic and northeast baseball stadium should be like Safeco, no exceptions.  None.  Not one.  The "umbrella" concept needs to be implemented yesterday.

LOL Brady Anderson / Rafael Palmeiro.  There was a lot of juice in that lineup.

I'd love some stat guru to find if there's ever been a one-year-wonder season like Anderson had, which was just coincidentally during the juice era.  I forget exactly what a standard deviation is, but that season had to be multiple SDs from his norm.
