  1. Hey everyone! I've been getting more into the graphic design area of sports and rather than drawing all my logos/uniforms I took a shot at putting one in photoshop. Here is what turned out. I am just looking for feedback and suggestions and might start a fantasy league in the future.
  2. Has this topic been discussed before regarding not quite accurate parts of sports logos/uniforms/stadiums in movies or tv shows? In the 1988 film “Naked Gun”, there’s a memorable funny scene where the main character, Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) disguises himself as an umpire during a game between the Angels and the Mariners. While the Mariners uniforms were accurate, the Angels were wearing red helmets instead of navy ones like they did in real life. The movie did get the navy caps (and the rest of the uniforms) correct however. https://briansgifs.tumblr.com/post/74542897964/the-way-baseball-should-be-played These are stadium-related inaccurate scenes rather than logo-related: - The Angels/Mariners games in the aforementioned Naked Gun movie is filmed in Dodger Stadium rather than the Angels’ home park (Angel Stadium in Anaheim) - In Major League (1989), the movie was filmed at County Stadium in Milwaukee rather than Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium. The 1994 sequel is filmed at Baltimore’s Camden Yards. The uniforms in both films are accurate based on the 1988 and 1993 seasons respectively. However, In Major League 2's movie cover, actor Corbin Bernsen is wearing a red undershirt with his uniform instead of navy as seen with Charlie Sheen. The Indians always wore navy socks/undershirts with those uniforms and never wore red in real life. - In one scene in Rookie of the Year (1993), the Cubs are on a road trip playing the Dodgers. The teams are clearly playing at New Comiskey Park (the White Sox ballpark) rather than Dodger Stadium. However, the uniforms throughout the movie are accurate (based on the 1992 season) - In Angels in the Outfield (1994), the movie was filmed at Oakland Coliseum (The A's ballpark, pre-Mount Davis) rather than Angel Stadium in Anaheim. The uniforms throughout the movie are accurate (based on the 1993 season) Here are some basketball ones: There were made-for-TV movies about Michael Jordan (MJ: an American Hero in 1999) and Dennis Rodman (Bad as I Wanna Be in 1998) in the late 1990s. Due to not getting rights to use NBA licenses (logos, uniforms, etc), the actors had to wear generic-looking uniforms in both films. The Jordan movie is on YouTube. Go to 1:13:16 to see the Bulls uniforms in the movie. However, the Rodman movie is not. Here's the ABC promo (plus a small clip of the Spurs "logo" at 0:08) Anyone else know any other sports logo/stadium inaccuracies in TV Shows or Movies? Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Soccer, etc.
  3. I'm not exactly sure what to call this as it's a bit different from the Unused Logos/Jersey thread. This is forgotten history about team name changes, logo rumors and relocation that never -- that kind of stuff. I bring this up for a couple of reasons and I'll illustrate my point to hopefully set the tone of the thread. I was researching the late '80s NBA expansion of Miami, Orlando, Minnesota and Charlotte and found a few interesting nuggets in this article. I knew about the Charlotte Spirit nickname as it wasn't well received, the I found the Florida Heat nickname bit interesting and pretty much forgotten without having to dig pretty far back into news archives to find the reference. Additionally there was The Athletic article yesterday about the Dallas Mavericks aborted rebranding in the late 90s before Mark Cuban bought the team and branded them with their current look. I also found a few mentions in other articles of the possibilities of the Spurs moving to Miami to accommodate both Expansion bids in Florida, since the NBA was originally set to expand only by three instead of four teams. Anyways, I'd love to discover more lost history in other sport leagues since basketball is what I know best. What do you have?
  4. I tried to develop a Kent State baseball hat and logo. This was done awhile back to get feedback from friends and family which did not provide any consensus. Thought I’d post what I have to get some feedback before I try to work on them again.
  5. Since I don't think anyone has started a topic relating to this, I was wondering what you think the best and worst logo recolorings are (only minor changes are okay). Most end up being upgrades, but some are actually downgrades in my opinion. Note these are not full redesigns, just changing of colors of a present logo. Best to (Got rid of that horribly dated Vegas Gold) to (Returned the Lions back to their nice classic colors) to (That old Pistons color scheme was just awful. Going back to the old colors was necessary) to (Another product of the 90s removed, replacing the colors with the classic team colors) to (God who thought that gold and red combo was a good idea to begin with. Changed colors much more unique and poppy) Worst to (Yeah the yellow was improved from the 90s logo, but really returning to those weird colors?) to (That grey facemask just looks so much worse than the white one in my opinion) to (The colors went from actually from the jerseys/scheme to not representative of the team colors AT ALL) to (The red just pops so much more than that ugly maroon color) to (I know there's a time jump, but the old colors just pop so much more than the dull new colors) There are definitely more out there. Want to hear your opinions!
  6. Hi, I have a special question for any of you who is experienced graphic designer in sport industry. The question goes to industry standards in pricing, licensing royalties. Not sure this place is the right one, but I have a feeling it may be I should explain a bit the background of why I ask. I run a jersey design blog and Twitter account called Dresblog in Czech Republic. Not an easy thing, since european hockey design is poisoned with a lot of commercials on the jerseys, so it is not only about the design, but also about trying to persuade people things could work the same even in more decent way And yes, I was inspired a lot also by this very website, when I got the idea to move the tweets from my personal account to some specialised one. Anyway, the sport design is my hobby only, since mostly I am an illustrator. But as it turns out, some people like my opinions and ask me to do a sport design for them too. I do it now or then, yet so far mostly for friends only (you can see my pinned tweet, that is my work). Now it seems those requests come more often even from people that are regular customers. And here is the thing. Here in Czech Republic, there is still not much well known that graphic work and price consists from at least two parts. The job itself and the amount of rights the customer gets for using the work. No matter whether he will hang it on the wall or print the t-shirts in every country possible. I see it every day, when I negotiate with my customers, even graphics themselves, except those doing for big business companies, are not much aware they can get something like royalties. Many years of communism has damaged a lot of things, including the marke practices, this is one of them, people has lost the awareness of how to treat the creative rights fair. And that is why I ask you for an advice. For my illustrations, I got a handbook from US Graphic Artist Guild. I got some idea what to charge when I paint an illustration for a t-shirt or do a cover design for the package now. I got some idea or common prices for what to charge for a logo, for unlimited license use of such. But sport, that is still something bit different. The strength of a club history, of what it means for fans, it sets the balance elsewhere, in opinion. And I wish to be fair for both sides of the deal, customer and myself too. So I try to look around, how do they do it in other countries. My basic questions I got in my head would be these: Sport vs. business logo - does the price differ? Sport logo used for merch - any fee, royalties? Sport merch design generally - what royalties? I try to explain the thoughts for this: When I compare creation of business and sport team logo, I wonder whether is there in general any difference in price paid or price construction. Company logos are usually not charged for royalties, have unlimited usage, sice owner gets all-in rights, which are included to the price (based on the company size etc). But the sport logos will most probably take a place on merchandise often as the main theme of such merch. So does this change the price of the logo anyhow? Or does this lead to separation of the logo creation and basic usage price (including all-in usage on anything that is not sold) and logo merchandise usage price? So lets say the logo is priced similar way like in business. And then merch itself is priced extra and paid in royalties. If so, what should be such? I have found that average rate may be 8-11 %, but I am not sure whether this includes using of logo or some other original art (like bellow). Speaking of original art merchandise, how are the average royalties in sport design, let’s say for designing a t-shirt? I am aware that it could differ from the complexity of such design, with some logo plus simple typography at the lower end (if even) to higher rates for a complex original art or illustration. But is that how things really work? Those are questions that are not easy to answer without having the experience in this particular part of sport business. And that is why I try to find the answer here. If any of you have such experience and is fine with sharing it with me, if any of you knows someone who should be a good person to ask - I will be glad for any kind of answer. I am not asking this only because of my self, or my business, though I will use any valid information. I find such knowledge to be very useful for any graphic, and it is a thing I try to share with my friends, for healthy and balanced cooperation with clients helps to all of us. Apart for the illustration itself this is one of the most common themes in our personal discussions and we share our own experiences and knowledge a lot. Thanks a lot.   7. Another Miami Marlins rebrand thread... I'll start by saying I'm not the biggest fan of the new logo in general and I was just getting used to their "look" after years of warming up to it. Any way, this lead me to create my version of some Miami Marlins logos. I'm not too sure how far I'm going to take this project as it was just purely fun for me to lay these out but I thought I'd get some criticism and feedback on where I'm at so far. The colors used are a mix of the old teal, and the now old orange..I doubt they're exact but inspired by anyway. The way I have these presented is in no particular order or hierarchy. They still need some refinement of course and I want to go back and explore more dynamic typography options although I don't mind the clean, bold look. Let me know what you think!

For parts of the past six years but particularly during the past 18 months, I've been dedicating a large percentage of my time toward launching a new professional sports league - of a sport that hasn't really been tested in North American markets. It's not as imaginative as Kronum (look it up if you're unfamiliar), but an internationally known sport which, for whatever reason, has never been tried here at anything resembling a professional level. I've now reached a point where I wish to bounce this concept off of others, as well as to initiate and develop a business relationship with some talented graphic designers should this thing actually come to fruition. There are, or at one time at least were, a number of talented people who had solid skill sets. What I have in mind is gathering a group of such people, putting them into a collaborative, electronically-centered environment, and letting them collectively create and maintain this league's entire identity portfolio, spinning off finished product to a "Properties" entity which would license them (i) to league teams at a development cost + nominal basis, and (ii) to third parties (e.g., merchandise vendors) at a standardized royalty rate for the industry. As I envision this concept, while the Properties entity would be owned by myself and the various team operators, those who contribute their ideas and sweat equity would benefit in a unique way as well. On projects that aren't revenue generating, the Properties entity would bill the team operator at cost of production, which would be paid to the designer/designers involved less any necessary overhead (i.e., taxes). On projects that do generate revenue, the Properties entity would pay the designer/designers involved one-third of whatever royalty fees it collects from the work over an extended (though not indefinite) period of time (I'm thinking 7 years, but that could be negotiated from project to project). We anticipate that for example, with a 12.5% standard royalty rate, a team logo that was embroidered on a $29.99 retail hat by a vendor for example would net its designers roughly $1.25 per piece. This would be split on collaborative efforts equally among all who contribute to the finished work. Taking an ownership interest in the Properties entity may also be a possibility for those whose work merits such consideration. Now to be clear, I'm asking you to design absolutely nothing now. The only logo we need at this stage (that of the league itself) is done. I'm not posting this here in hope of seeking "spec" work, either. Quite the contrary. I want those who get involved in this to generate ongoing, long term revenue from the brands they create, if the material is good enough to generate sales. If you've never had a shot at doing a real pro team's logo and ancillary collateral? If this league concept takes root, you'd have that opportunity. What I am asking is that if you have interest (and feel you have sufficient ability), you PM me with your real name and an e-mail address. I will respond via e-mail, sending you a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Once that is executed, your first step will be to receive a written briefing on the concept itself, and hopefully gathering your feedback on it. I'm not promising anything here - I'm taking a risk, both of my money and my personal reputation, in hope of getting this thing launched. It may go nowhere, or there could be a hall of fame celebrating this sport here in Raleigh, North Carolina a hundred years from now. I have no way of knowing, but we won't know unless we take a shot at it. If you're interested in being part of that shot, this is a "ground floor" chance - one I know doesn't come often for anyone.
  9. Hey Everyone! Third time's a charm!? The NPHL is a group of dedicated hockey fans that want to play in a league but there is just one problem...they can't skate! So we decided to play a form of "Dek Hockey" on outside basketball courts. 3 on 3, no goalies, street puck, and we use the small skill nets for a goal. The uniforms will consist of a T-shirt, basketball shorts and hockey gloves. (And obviously sticks!) The NPHL will premiere the Summer of 2019 and right now we are in the phase of coming up with the team names and logos. So with that being said I hope you guys like this one! C&C Welcome! NPHL - Simple design. Letters stacked on top each other to form a strong crest. A star in the North East of the logo to represent the league itself. Colors are black and white.

  11. Hey everybody. I’ve been thinking about this for only about a minute but it really fascinates me. The concept of lost media is both utterly simple and endlessly complicated. Recent notable cases of found lost media include “Sally”, the infamous “Clockman” cartoon that spooked many an 80s child, but in reality is just an average visit from your uncle Trevor (you know the one, wears a banana yellow tuxedo with a Slipknot t-shirt to funerals); the lost sequel to “You on Kazoo!”; and “A Day with Spongebob Squarepants”, which never existed. I saw a comment on Chris Creamer’s new infographic, If Sports Teams Couldn’t Chane Their Logos, proposing that the original Philadelphia Flyers logo has been lost to time. The only other example that comes to mind is also from the NHL, which is any Hamilton Tigers logo, except for old, damaged photographs. Does anyone else know about any phantom logos? Maybe we can uncover them.
  12. So..."Biggest upgrades" and "Biggest downgrades" are already a thing on here. I figured I may as well start the only remaining thread in the series. In your opinion, which uniforms kept the quality close to the same level as their predecessors? For me the classic example would be the lateral move made by the Denver Broncos in 1997. They went from good uniform to good uniform (in my opinion anyway) while changing the dark jersey color and radically altering their design. The 1996 Philadelphia Eagles were similar - big changes, but all in all went from middling to middling. If there is a bad-to-bad lateral move...that one's a little trickier. I'm sure someone can fill us in though.
  13. A lot of people here at the mothership reference the NFL's "five year rule" when it comes to changes in uniforms, helmets, logos and so forth. But what is the rule, exactly? Well, thanks to my bothering to look it up, I'm providing the answer for future, I'm sure scholarly, discussion. The "five year rule" is represented by a resolution adopted by the NFL's Executive Council as "2002 Resolution G-3." The formatting might get a little wonky below but its current form, verbatim (verbatim to the point where I'm even following the author's mistake in that the NFL's Constitution and Bylaws uses roman numerals, thus there is no "Article 19," but rather an "Article XIX"), is as follows... But wait... there's more! Only this I have to modify from the original text's layout because it's in table format... Isn't that simple to understand?
  14. Well its been promised for years and I finally finished the league last night! I will post two teams today then the rest next week. The concept behind this for those that have not followed my fictional league MLF, is that the MLF decided they needed a developmental league but did not want to brand it as such. They came up with MLF Spring League as a branding. There are eight teams one for every 4 teams in the MLF. The design of the league would be to name a managing partner that each club could agree on with equal investments coming from each team. The results have been pretty good so far. Here is the league logo.

Every year I notice EPL clubs tend to make a fairly big deal out of releasing their kits for the upcoming season, sometimes it's just a change of an advertiser's mark or some other, relatively minute change. But this got me wondering: how would American fans respond to this practice if it were conducted in every major sport, every year? I mean we have people blowing gaskets over a leaked Tennessee Titans jersey that'll be presented tomorrow and while it's a change, and not necessarily a good change, it's not exactly Earth-shattering. So how would you feel if you knew that every year, the New York Yankees were going to release a new jersey that (probably) had some type of tweak to it? Or the Chicago Bears? Or when NBA teams figure out to make single-year sponsorship ad deals and start actually doing this? Do these annual uniform changes actually result in significant jersey sales in the European pro soccer circuits? Would they here? Would fans rebel and stop buying stuff altogether? What, in general, do you think the reaction to annual changes would be?
  16. I had started a thread in the sports logos section a few months back in regards to this design. I recently made contact with someone from LSUA who advised me they did not choose any of the entries they received for their contest. So with that being said I can now go ahead and post my work. The idea behind this concept was to use a TIGER to create a link between LSUA and LSU while introducing a fresh interpretation that would connect to the Generals nickname. Secondary and tertairy marks were added to further tie in to the Generals home and location while also making it a complete set. Check em out and let me know what you all think. On April 21, 2001 at the conclusion of the first of that American staple we call "The Big Game at the End", as we watched the Xtreme lift that big X over their heads, we thought that the XFL would be taken away from us forever. But apparently, there are rumblings that the X Football League might be fixin' to make a comeback! Now if that's true, which I hope it is, first of all I'll be tuning in for sure, and second of all they're gonna have to tone down the 2001 more than a few notches. Especially with NFL ratings in steep decline this season, this is the perfect time for Vince McMahon to swoop in and create the Anti-NFL, or the Xtra-Fun League, if you will. But image is everything. And safety, safety's probably in there somewhere too. We'll see. So I want to get way out ahead of the rumors and set up what I think would be a fitting return for the XFL 18 years later. I'm not gonna quibble over the actual rulebook, I'll let them figure that out, but I do know what I'd like to see design wise. Here are my design rules: 1. There are no rules! Actually, there are a few. They're right here. 2. No white allowed. Off-white is allowed in small doses, as well as silver, but stark white is not allowed on Logos, Uniforms, or Merchandise of any kind. 3. Helmets are a canvas. No more small, tame, rinky-dink helmet logos. Helmets should be loud and expressive of a team's design, serving as the centerpiece of their uniform. 4. 3 logos per team, no more and no less. They are as follows; Insignia: main logo, Proxy: secondary, Character: letter logo 5. 3 uniforms per team, no more and no less. They are as follows; Base: worn at home, Clash: worn on the road, Army: outside the box third jersey worn at home. 6. Unique NOBs are still allowed, but have to be approved before being applied to jersey. So there you have 'em, my official design rules for the XFL! I'll be following these closely for all eight teams (more on teams ahead). The New Official Logos of the XFL The original XFL logo was rushed and horrible, so I wanted to make a logo that would completely change people's view of the league. Modernized, but as no nonsense as always. This was my creative process, pardon the roughness. Early thoughts were that I'd like to include a lightning bolt in the X or make the X from negative space, but I ended up choosing something closest to the lowest logo on the center left because I liked the unique shape and inclusion of a football. After some retooling, I ended up with a result I'm really happy with that includes an Insignia, Proxy, and Character logo for the league. The Insignia uses a combo football/shield shape with half of the X made by stitches; football or otherwise. Teams Here's the thing, I don't know the teams yet. I know the cities, but I don't know the teams. The reason being this is going to be a step-by-step project so I'll be including my entire process, part of which is choosing the names of all 8 teams. I'd love to hear any names you can come up with as well! Here are the eight locations: Boston (new) Chicago Detroit (new) Las Vegas California New York St. Louis (new) Texas (new) So there it is, The new XFL!   19. I recently entered a contest held by the Post2Post YouTube channel about redesigning the logo of current NHL teams. It was possible to send a entry for every team but I only entered with three. I chose the teams I already had an idea for which were the Coyotes, Oilers and Islanders. I could have done also the Kings logo but I ran short of time. I'm pretty happy with the overall result as all my logos made the top 63 and the Isles logo arrived 4th (it was 5th but then second logo got disqualified). Still, I was a bit disappointed for the other entries as I felt that in the previous contest they had way better entries in the top10 while in this one some were a tad weak. I'd like to hear some comment on my work as I mainly tried them out just because I really enjoy contests and events even if in the end my works are just average. Here you have my entries I decided to redo the Coyotes logo just because I've always felt like their logo was nice but a bit too busy near the coyote's eyes and that the only animal head was a bit odd just like that. As a second I went with the Oilers also if I like their current logo (they are my favourite team) but I see that it is a bit outdated and in my opinion not old enough to be an historical one, like the Canadiens logo, so it should be updated. While I quite like the overall result of the drop on the gear wheel in the end I'm not completely ok with the helmet. It looked like a good idea to incorporate it but maybe the logo could have looked better without it. With the Islanders I had the easiest task as their logo is pretty awful. I know they won 4 Stanley Cups in a row with it, but the same I've said for the Oilers applies here. I know that the fisherman logo was higly hated but I think that it was a bold move out of the comfort zone they should repeat in the near future (without the teal please...).
  20. After spending far too many hours in the pubs around East London, it suddenly dawned on me that a lot of my favourite drinking establishments could have sports logo designed around their names. I have started to create the East London Pub League (working title) which will feature logos for 16 different East London boozers. Not quite sure which sport they will be representing, but I think I'll be heading towards an American Football League with 4 conferences. I will try and inject a little bit of humour when I can, but my aim is to design serious branding for each pub to help sharpen my design skills. No idea how long this will take to complete, but just going to post as and when I can.   21. I guess we're starting to look forward to the 2018-19 season with the recent news of the Charlotte Hornets wearing the white version of their classic throwbacks next year. Just on a side note, it'll be interesting to see if the Hornets follow that up in 2019-20 with their purple throwback jerseys? Obviously that's just speculation. As far as other changes at this point, I am not sure if we've heard anything else. I would assume more teams will wear classic throwbacks and we'll see a new wave of community jerseys since apparently those will be a yearly change for some if not all teams?
  22. As many (most?) of you know, the (vast) majority of people think the new/current Los Angeles Clippers logo sucks... and for good reason. But spontaneously - out of absolutely nowhere - I came up with a brilliant concept. If nobody has thought of this before, I might actually be surprised. (Maybe a little?) Well, check this one out! It's a prototype that exemplifies the best of minimalist design (which is the trend du jour), while incorporating elements that make way too much sense. And yes - the red and blue used here is EXACTLY the same as that used in the current and former Los Angeles Clippers logos. The logo looks like a boat, which is a stand-in for a Clipper ship - the Los Angeles Clippers, which were originally based in the naval city of San Diego (as the San Diego Clippers), borrows its nickname from the aforementioned seafaring vessel. The logo incorporates a stylized "LA" (which you can see here), and the bottom of the logo incorporates a part of a basketball, which is commonplace for NBA logos. (By my count, two-thirds of all NBA teams have this as part of their primary logo.) Not to brag, but I say that this idea is too good to ignore. If someone improves upon this design and it gets some serious press, I've done my job already. Thoughts? Disclaimer: This work, illustrated herein, is an entirely original concept by sj10689 (the original author of this thread); any other logos/designs which have already been created prior to the posting of this comment, that bear any (striking) similarity, or is (almost) exactly the same, constitutes a circumstance which is purely coincidental.   23. Instead of starting a new thread for a separate project, I'll go ahead and post it in this thread. First up is a redesign for the logo of Maryland Sports Access, a website created by a close friend back in 2015. Clearly it's clip art and word art heavy and doesn't read as professional. I believe that less is more. With that in mind, I have designed a simpler logo set (images 2 and 3) for him that can hopefully distinguish the website as professional instead of amateur. While it's no amazing difference, it's a start. Lastly, the final image are designs that personally didn't seem up to par.
  24. Recently I enrolled in a Graphic Design program in college and was in design class when I had the idea to create circle logos. I started with Vanderbilt nothing else really just the logo C&C welcome as well as request for the next logo.
  25. So, I found the original Minnesota Vikings logo used from 1961-1965. I think this one looks better and cleaner than the current one displayed, and was wondering if we could update it. This is not a custom design by myself, it is the original logo designed by Karl Hubenthal in 1961.
