  1. A companion series to "Players in the 'wrong' uniforms" and "Players on the right team but wrong uniform"...this is about players who spent most of their careers in crappy unis. Obviously the poster boy here is Tom Brady. But there are others. There must be others.
  2. To kick this series off, I'm going with the Dolphins, Titans and Jaguars since those are the teams that will soon unveil new designs in the real world. (Please hold template requests, I will provide at end of the series in SVG format) THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE BY BRAVE-BIRD 08 MIAMI DOLPHINS For Miami I wanted to focus on using layers of white and dark grey to mimic an actual dolphin, while letting a more vibrant teal and shade of orange pop off the uniform. I've seen a lot of Miami concepts in the past use the sunburst as a focal point of the design, so I wanted to go in a different direction and use the swooping feel of the logo to tie the look together. The helmet is much more modern iteration, while the pants are intended to echo the feel of the helmet as well. ALTERNATES ONE | ALTERNATES TWO | ALTERNATES THREE Thanks for viewing! Next up: Tennessee Titans
  3. A few months ago the Jags came out with a new uniform set. The Jags are my second fave team behind the Bucs and I was curious about them. They were revealed and had very mixed reception. I decided to save my judgment until I've seen more of it. I may do this with the Titans who also got a big overhaul at some other point. After letting it marinate and doing research on what NIKE and the Jags organization wanted from these I've come to a solid conclusion. My opinion may change when I see them on field but for now I feel I've seen enough of them Helmet- The helmet is amazing. It is simple but looks beautiful. I'm glad they didn't go matte because I really think matte black helmets look kind of cheap compared to colored ones. overall 10/10 Jersey- So I am very mixed about these jersey sets. On one hand I appreciate the clean look but on the other hand it just looks so boring. I don't think clean and boring are synonymous but these don't invoke any feeling out of me. Everything about these just screams 'fine'. The numbers are okay. I prefer the old font but these are okay I think they look a bit too wide but it is serviceable. There is very little detail to them to talk about. I don't mind the tiny jaguar head on the chest but it also looks kind of awkward. I don't mind patches but with teams like the Steelers or the Jets the patches look much more natural. Here with the jaguars it doesn't work for me. The JAGS patch honestly looked much better as a patch and here it felt like cheap NFL branding. I do prefer it over a big wordmark above the numbers though. The numbers have embezzled trim that matches the color of the jerseys but it isn't noticeable from afar. I also think the cuffs of the sleeves look rather strange with the colored tips. It is even stranger as close up they have these claw marks but they aren't noticeable so it is whatever 5/10 Pants and socks- Again not much to talk about very plain. The back of the pants have this weird teal half stripe for some reason. The socks do look nice with the teal stripe at the bottom but that is it 5/10 So my final grade is a 6.6/10. It is an okay look for now but it definitely feels like an over correction of the previous. They are kind of disappointing especially with all the talk of tradition and makes it more annoying when you watch the documentary on them. Some direct quotes from it 'We have three players who should be in the HoF... And with these new uniforms we want people to think back to these players' 'The teal is the heart of the brand' 'The uniforms are simple, bold, traditional and distinct' It just feels like they are saying one thing and doing another. They want to essentially combine the past and present but gives a look that is nothing like the old school design. They say teal is the heart of the brand but make black the primary. They say they are simple, bold, traditional and distinct but only one of those fits the description. I honestly feel the Jags should embrace crazy designs but also be good. They are a 90s team with a unique color pallet it is kind of silly to act like they are a founding NFL team. Teams like the Giants can have simple uniforms because they are an old school team the Jags aren't. I understand the reason but I just feel they went from one extreme to another. Now how would I fix them? - Use the old font. It looked good and fit the branding. It is also basically an updated version of the older rounded font - Have gold and teal/black trim on the number - Remove the jaguar head from the chest and move it to the front of the pants - Perhaps add some kind of claw mark striping on the sleeve caps and pants. Maybe even introduce an updated version of their full body jaguar logo - Have teal be the primary I just personally feel these uniforms are a decent start but take themselves way too seriously. I saw someone on reddit do an analyst on the old set and he said the biggest problem is they lacked an identity. To me these uniforms have even less identity and persists with the problem. Honestly the old set was just a few tweaks from being perfect just use a full black helmet and remove some of the excess stuff and they'd have been amazing In summary they are perfectly fine and should definitely add onto them in the future and embrace the teal and gold instead of black and white
  4. So..."Biggest upgrades" and "Biggest downgrades" are already a thing on here. I figured I may as well start the only remaining thread in the series. In your opinion, which uniforms kept the quality close to the same level as their predecessors? For me the classic example would be the lateral move made by the Denver Broncos in 1997. They went from good uniform to good uniform (in my opinion anyway) while changing the dark jersey color and radically altering their design. The 1996 Philadelphia Eagles were similar - big changes, but all in all went from middling to middling. If there is a bad-to-bad lateral move...that one's a little trickier. I'm sure someone can fill us in though.
  5. One question that has been bugging me is how to define what make a good or bad design. Specifically, what are the aesthetic maxims that any designer ought to follow to make a "football uniform" or "baseball uniform" or "hockey uniform." Given those rules, can they be bent or broken in certain scenarios? So for example a baseball uniform in my mind, follows the following rules: Home uniforms should have either pinstripes or piping (collar, headspoon, sleeve cuff, pants) BUT NEVER both. Undershirts should match either the very top or bottom of the stirrup (sanitary socks do not count unless they are a non-white color) Whatever script is on the front of a jersey should match the numbers on the back in terms of colors. For example red outlined in blue for both the team name and the number on the back. Belts should match either the cap or the cleats, preferably both. Pants piping should be no wider than 1 inch. Piping should match from the jersey to the pants in some capacity. Softball tops should generally be worn with a cap of the same or darker color. The squatchee on the cap should match the brim when the brim is a different color from the crown. If the brim is the same color as the crown, the squatchee can be any color.
  6. I don’t get why people seem to hate anything Nike does because it’s too ‘complicated’. I don’t get the hate. I love that kind of stuff and don’t understand what is wrong with them. Sure sometimes they look bad but sometimes it feels like people hate them simply because Nike. Like I don’t get the hate for the jags old set. Besides the helmet I really loved the set. The biggest criticism is that it is ‘too complicated’ but they never clarify it. I just think they looked really sleek. And now they are saying the same about the Titans new look Like why? Because god forbid we get a set that isn’t generic and stands out from the crowd. The sword on the sleeeves look awesome. Worst of all people will outright ignore problems of ‘classic’ sets because they’re classic and through fore means they’re perfect. Like the 49ers pants are a disgusting cream yellow and inconsistent striping but everyone treats them like they’re perfect. With the jags new uniforms people are outright praising them for being as generic as possible. I don’t get. They’ll always be a place for simplistity but why can’t we get fun and crazy uniforms too? Why does every uniform have to look the same? Id like some real criticisms to why the titans and jags old uniforms were bad and not ‘owe of course they’re bad just look at those sword and :censored:’ I want legitimate criticisms and it has to be consistent (example if you hate the jags patch for looking too cluttered you have to hate the Steelers patch too)
  7. A lot of people here at the mothership reference the NFL's "five year rule" when it comes to changes in uniforms, helmets, logos and so forth. But what is the rule, exactly? Well, thanks to my bothering to look it up, I'm providing the answer for future, I'm sure scholarly, discussion. The "five year rule" is represented by a resolution adopted by the NFL's Executive Council as "2002 Resolution G-3." The formatting might get a little wonky below but its current form, verbatim (verbatim to the point where I'm even following the author's mistake in that the NFL's Constitution and Bylaws uses roman numerals, thus there is no "Article 19," but rather an "Article XIX"), is as follows... But wait... there's more! Only this I have to modify from the original text's layout because it's in table format... Isn't that simple to understand?
  8. Well its been promised for years and I finally finished the league last night! I will post two teams today then the rest next week. The concept behind this for those that have not followed my fictional league MLF, is that the MLF decided they needed a developmental league but did not want to brand it as such. They came up with MLF Spring League as a branding. There are eight teams one for every 4 teams in the MLF. The design of the league would be to name a managing partner that each club could agree on with equal investments coming from each team. The results have been pretty good so far. Here is the league logo.
  9. I believe Gupti first brought this news in the 2017 NFL thread. Credit to him for putting it here first. I have just typed it up and included a few links to Twitter threads. According to Twitter account @madebytim, the Jacksonville Jaguars will be changing uniforms next offseason. The current talk is that this information is being disseminated during stadium tours, although there is no current official word. This is the 5th year of the current set so a change is possible. A quick rundown of the rumors indicate that Tom Coughlin has some significant input into the process, with the knowledge that he wants something "more traditional," does not like the emphasis on the gold and wants more teal in the design, and that this will be a complete change of the look. There are quite possibly some elements that could stay (the current away uniform is a pretty incredible update of the classic away uniform), including the "JAGS shield." One thing that is pretty much a sure change is the helmet. Both Tim of the @madebytim Twitter and Alfie Crow of Big Cat Country, the Jags' SB Nation site, have said they were sitting on the news. Link: https://twitter.com/MadeByTim/status/913435220334010369 Initial thread here: https://twitter.com/MadeByTim/status/913431383426699264 A bit more from London trip here: https://twitter.com/MadeByTim/status/913433955612991488 Most of the info can be found by clicking around that Twitter account. Again, nothing official but exciting to get rid of that helmet.
  10. Hi everybody! I'm gonna start a FIBA basketball uniform database. Spain at the 1984 Summer Olympics, Los Angeles (USA)
  11. Every year I notice EPL clubs tend to make a fairly big deal out of releasing their kits for the upcoming season, sometimes it's just a change of an advertiser's mark or some other, relatively minute change. But this got me wondering: how would American fans respond to this practice if it were conducted in every major sport, every year? I mean we have people blowing gaskets over a leaked Tennessee Titans jersey that'll be presented tomorrow and while it's a change, and not necessarily a good change, it's not exactly Earth-shattering. So how would you feel if you knew that every year, the New York Yankees were going to release a new jersey that (probably) had some type of tweak to it? Or the Chicago Bears? Or when NBA teams figure out to make single-year sponsorship ad deals and start actually doing this? Do these annual uniform changes actually result in significant jersey sales in the European pro soccer circuits? Would they here? Would fans rebel and stop buying stuff altogether? What, in general, do you think the reaction to annual changes would be?
  12. Hello everybody! After about 2 months of not posting, I'm back! I have looked through a lot of concepts trying to find the perfect basketball concepts for college, I have not found it. I thought I can be the first big College Basketball Uniform thread. Credit to @CAB for his good designs for the teams he did, and SportsFontDatabase. Credit to ScottySprings with the template that I used. I will be doing the power 5 and the Big East. I will be doing the good teams too but not their whole conference. After all of my teams, I may do requests. C&C is always appreiated! You will notice things about this thread: 1. Most of the uniforms are the ones that the currently have, it is very hard to change the uniforms that they have. 2. I have put the sponser on the right side of the uniforms. 3. I used apps on all of the uniforms, some may be bad quality. 4. I have adjusted all teams to fit the templates I used. 5. After I finish ALL of the uniforms that I plan to do, I will be taking requests! If you would like a special uniform for a team that I did, or if you want another team, comment when I am done! Enjoy the uniforms! 13. Majestic Athletic, the former official uniform supplier of Major League Baseball, was too quiet. So someone louder grabbed the mic. In 2019 Under Armour takes over the official MLB uniform contract, an honor they (probably rightfully) stole from Majestic Athletic. How could a smaller brand like Majestic have competed with a sports manufacturing behemoth? Well, I'd have started with one of my favorite dumb marketing buzzwords -- brand extension. One way Majestic could extend their brand is by aligning with a partner who can help elevate their brand. In this case, New Balance -- a rising player in the MLB cleat game -- would be a great partner to help create a custom cleat that leverages Majestic's proprietary FlexBase mesh material, which is what all official on-field MLB uniforms are made of. Not only would this give Majestic and their uniform technology more exposure, but it creates something new, unique, and tangible for fans to care about -- and is a huge revenue opportunity in the process. 14. Dear Admins? I am not sure if this is where I can request and update of these two teams but most of the other team pages are complete with their uniform history on this site. For The Giants all uniforms are missing from 1925-2004 as well and the alternative uniforms. I have some of these if you need any help with this. For The Rangers all uniforms are missing from 1926-1975 as well the alternative uniforms and the special event uniforms. Again I have some of these if you need any help with this. Thank you, Mike
  15. Finally got some time to mess around with these hockey uniform templates. I thought I'd try doing hockey uniform versions of the 4 final teams in the NFL playoffs. Never did a mash up before so thought I'd try it out. Wanted to see what the thoughts were. It's the Patriots, Jaguars, Vikings and Eagles. I took various parts of the design from elements of the football uniform, IE: Pant shell stripes from pants, socks from socks or sleeve striping and jersey elements influenced by the elements on the football jerseys. Really enjoyed doing these and experimenting a bit. I didn't change/adjust any of the team logos. I just used the versions that the teams use in the NFL. Hopefully this works.
  16. Hello! In this topic I will post the concepts of football shirts I am making. I thought it was better to make a topic for all football shirts than to create one for each league, but I'm going to post concepts here for clubs around the world! 18. Two questions after watching last night's Pac 12 Championship: 1. What is the color of USC's facemasks & what is the story behind them? They used to be gray, right? Now they're almost like some sort of clay/pink? 2. Why do USC jerseys look like they are made of Saran Wrap?
  19. (Updated) I have updated the main post so the finalized renderings are seen first. (Still debating over final numbers. Both based off current Eagles font, but modified) Here is the remainder of the blog for how the above were created. Look through and comment I will update the finals if suggestions and changes are warranted. **** ORIGINAL POST BELOW ***** Okay, I've heard lots of talk about modernizing a throwback classic Eagles uniform but haven't seen any good renderings for what the single vision is for this. So, I took the time and created a one. There is too much discussion to me about "Kelly Green". It's more than that. It's bringing back tradition and having an identity that the loyal fan base can relate to. Lots of Kelly Green advocates seem to just want the "old" back. And this annoys the Millennials who don't care about the past...preferring cool. I just want green back (not some hipster made up color) and would love to see a return of silver. To me, the Eagles' colors should be green, silver and white. Agree??? I feel these would be some of the best uniforms in football...home or away. Your input is appreciated to fine tune them. Notes: Green - Not Kelly (50/60s), and not as dark as 80's. Hopefully modernly in between (jersey would have modern shiny shoulder/chest) Silver - The silver has a slight green tint to make it unique (pants would be shiny material) No black - removed from wing logo (any black seen is outline of drawings only) Facemask - Gray, not shiny silver Concept - Closest is Vick era throwback 50's (with shoulder stripes everyone comments on), mixed with the 80's (without overdoing the stripes), and utilizing modern helmet wing and materials
  20. Aaron Dodson from The Undefeated listed The 30 Best NBA Throwback Jerseys is response to Nike's announcement that eight teams will be wearing a Classic Edition uniform (READ: Throwback) this upcoming year. There's a lot to be said about Dodson's list, which needless to say, I don't agree with. So I thought I'd share ONE throwback for each 30 teams that I'd love to see worn. This isn't necessarily the best designed throwback from their team history, but more back to an era relatable to the fans and their history. Also, in the spirit of the NBA going with more Color vs. Color match ups, I decided to go with colored jerseys, especially since the Association Edition (READ: Home Uniform) will presumably be the only white jersey in team's collections. Anyways, here is my list. I'd love to see everyone else's opinions on what throwbacks you'd like your favorite team to sport next year or near future ...
  21. Recently we moved my Mom out of her house, and in the basement I found an old army locker I had squirreled away, with a few childhood treasures. Along with some awesome old sports magazines, and some hand painted action figures was a stack of drawings. They were in surprisingly good shape for being as much as 45 years old... probably because they were stacked so tight, and my parents' religious use of a dehumidifier. They ranged from probably age 5 to age 14, mostly superheroes, but as I got older, a few football uniform designs started creeping in. This one was the oldest; I actually remember making this. I was probably 8, maybe 9... early 70's. I had been given an amazing set of markers... red, yellow, light blue, royal blue, pink, dark green, and black. At the time, I drew most every in pencil and went over it with a black ball point pen, then colored it in. I remember wanting to use as many colors as possible, but I couldn't get the green in. What I was really fascinated by is how much the set up looks like my current template I use today, and how I had already become a crazy stickler for matching stripes. Naturally, I decided to put it on an updated template; I tried my best to stick as close as possible to my 8 year old design... no "fixing". (The exceptions being the added "W" on the logo... I mean, come on!, and the addition of a road jersey, which I don't think at the time I bothered with.) There were other uniforms in there... for the most part, I started out inventing my own teams, but later I had a bunch of new designs for the Minnesota Vikings. Apparently at the time, I was very interested in adding a lot of yellow/gold to the Vikings. Anyway, I hope some of you get a kick out of this. I had a lot of fun making it. (Both times!) And if the Kansas Jayhawks break out something similar, I'm suing!
  22. Not Including Throwbacks And Holiday/Outdoor Uniforms.
  23. Over time, I have been working on concept uniforms for all 130 FBS football teams. I did the universities that are currently planning on staying or joining the FBS level. My designs were intended to be very unique and creative. I have had a lot of fun during this designing process while creating new uniform ideas. I will start uploading the uniforms for each team in alphabetical order. Let me know what you guys think and which ones are your favorites. Hope you enjoy!
