  1. With the Hurricanes unveiling their new away jersey and now having 3 different distinct looking jerseys I've decided to keep their basic looks but having them keep unified parts. All 3 jerseys keep the tonal storm flag stripes and I add them to the sleeves now. Home Away The home and away keep the primary logo on the front. I normally hate nicknames on hockey jerseys but Canes for some reason kind grows on me. However save that for the alternate the home and away for the primary logo. The stripe widths are now constant and I added the storm flags to the home jersey. Third I move "Canes" to the third jersey because I don't like how the storm flags look on the front of the jersey. I also add the sleeve to the hem to keep consistency and removed the storm grey because it just looked wherever I put it.
  2. (Edit 12/30/16) Took a break for a couple days but I will get back to it soon to do some fixes on LA, and Washington for sure..maybe some others) I wanted to start a project that would get my creativity going, and kind of kick-start me back into the mood of graphic design. I decided to create my ideal NHL. (formerly "perfect", but nothings perfect) This is what I personally would change, or not change as far as teams logos are concerned. I accept all thoughts, ideas, proposed changes etc..... ******NOT ALL THESE DESIGNS ARE MINE.****** Some are obviously based on teams past and present logo archives. Some are from concepts created that I found online. I will recognize each and every aspect of a logo, or entire logos that are not mine, and give 100% credit where credit is due. Most teams have a current logo, and a source logo (the logo used for my inspiration to my own) I will explain the best I can how I came up with the thought behind each chosen logo. I know most of them are color changes, but remember..this started as a project to get me motivated back into graphic design. There will be more custom projects to follow ANAHEIM DUCKS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO USED FOR MY VERSION: MY VERSION: (ALTERED ORIGINAL MIGHTY DUCKS LOGO) - I wanted to revert back to the old Mighty Ducks logo because I think it's more recognizable than the current webbed "D", it has attitude, and I just like it a whole lot better. - I felt the original colors were good to use since they are very unique, but I also wanted to incorporate the more 'orangey' orange for the sticks and the whole "Orange County" reference. - I removed the shading from inside the holes for the mask. ARIZONA COYOTES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (REVERT BACK TO ORIGINAL PHOENIX COYOTES LOGO) - Pretty much the same thought process as the Ducks. I wanted the older logo because of its attitude. The new one just really really doesn't do anything for me. - I figure the old logo will do good with an updated jersey, with the use of the dark maroon, and off-white for striping. Keep the crazy amount of colors strictly to the logo itself. BOSTON BRUINS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ALTERED SHADE OF YELLOW) - Small change to the yellow. Made if more of a distinct yellow, instead of the often used "golden yellow" around the NHL. BUFFALO SABRES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGOS (2): MY VERSION: - I really enjoyed the outcome of this one. - I asked myself, how could I make such a non-photogenic animal appear menacing for the Sabres. I like the total idea of the swords and the buffalo, but something just wasn't fully there for me to love it. I decided to remove the heavy blue from inside the circle, changed it to white keeping the overall look that people love, but giving it a modern feel. - Some people may not like the light grey within the white, but I attempted to make the wordmark and buffalo blue, and it just didn't give the look I wanted. I like the slightly subliminal approach. To each his own I suppose. CALGARY FLAMES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (REMOVE BLACK OUTLINE) - Simply removed the black outline. Is it necessary at all??? CAROLINA HURRICANES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (MODIFIED) - Changed the center to a more simplistic design. - Thickened the silver outline. - I feel as though there is a slight sense of movement the way it is offset. Didn't think this logo needed a major overhaul, but at the same time...something was not right. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS (NO CHANGES MADE) COLORADO AVALANCHE CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (MODIFIED) - Removed the blue oval and thickened the outline. - I felt the oval took away from the sizing of the logo especially while on jerseys, and I felt that it really serves no purpose on a logo that isn't exactly symmetrical to begin with. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (SWITCH TO BLUE AND OFF-WHITE ALTERNATE) - I HATE everything about the current primary Columbus uses. They overused red, white and blue scheme. And the primary logo that belongs at an All-Star game, not anywhere else to represent a professional sports team. - In comes the alternate blue and off-white canncon logo. Along with the jerseys they use to sport this logo. In my opinion this brings the overall look of the Blue Jackets from absolute worst in the league, to the top. They couldn't switch to this style in real life fast enough if you ask me. DALLAS STARS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: **NOT MY DESIGN*** DESIGN CREDIT TO 'TORCH CREATIVE' MY VERSION: - I took the design from Torch Creative and changed the shade of yellow to a lighter version, getting away from the brown spectrum. - I really like the design those guys came up with, and I just can't stand the current one used by Dallas, just does not feel like a great concept to me. DETROIT RED WINGS (NO CHANGES MADE) EDMONTON OILERS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I darkened the blue, and added the copper color (once used by the team) as an outline for the orange. I think it adds a little bit extra, without taking away any of the classic aspects from the well known Oilers logo. FLORIDA PANTHERS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGOS: (2) MY VERSION: - Not a fan of the new Panthers logo, I set out to create something that I always wanted to see, the old panther, slightly less detailed, jumping out of the sun. - I mocked this up against their older red jerseys and this logo really pops! HARTFORD WHALERS (TEAM ADDED) (NO CHANGES TO LOGO) - One of the greatest logos of all time in any sport. I just had to have the Hartford Whalers back in my perfect NHL, what's not to love? - Used original (lighter) blue and green. LA KINGS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGOS: (2) MY VERSION: - I felt there were a ton better options than the current banner flag / shield thing the Kings have going on right now. (Even though they've had success with it) - I wanted purple back in the picture, along with the crown and the font from that era. - After messing around quite a bit, this modern shield is what I came up with. I'd prefer this on a black jersey. LAS VEGAS KNIGHTS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM:(ALL LEGAL ISSUES ASIDE) MY VERSION: - Added the 'Las' to Vegas because it's just better. - With the LA Kings change to purple for my project, I figured silver would be the best way to go for the Knights. The dark color is an EXTREMELY deep blue, almost black, and the unique shade of red outline reminds me of the Canucks when they went blue and red. At the same time this feels different to me. - Looks a ton better than the current mud in my opinion. MINNESOTA WILD (NO CHANGES MADE) MONTREAL CANADIENS (NO CHANGES MADE) NASHVILLE PREDATORS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: MY VERSION: - I wanted to get away from all the golden yellow parody in the NHL, so I chose to give Nashville a more mellow yellow. - I altered the sabre-toothed cat to be more fierce. - The dark color is a really deep greenish blue with I feel contrasts the yellow pretty well. - All in all the changes feel pretty drastic, yet at the same time its all so familiar, I think this change would become very welcome in Tennessee once the bright orange/yellow memory wore off. NEW JERSEY DEVILS (NO CHANGES MADE) NEW YORK ISLANDERS (REVERT TO OLDER COLORS) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ONLY CHANGED BACK TO 97/98 SHADE OF BLUE) - I think the darker blue really really brings out the orange over the lighter blue. There's really little else to be said about this classic gem of a logo. NEW YORK RANGERS (NO CHANGES MADE) OTTAWA SENATORS (CHANGE TO TEAMS ALTERNATE AS PRIMARY) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ALTERNATE LOGO FROM SENATORS ARCHIVE) - I do not like the current Senators logo. At all. I see what they were going for, but in my opinion, it failed. Meanwhile they have this beauty^ as an alternate. They need to make the switch ASAP. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (NO CHANGES MADE) - My favorite team!!! Sweeeeeeet logo. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS (REVERT TO 'ROBOPENGUIN' BUT USE BRIGHTER YELLOW) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (REVERT BACK TO THE ROBO-PENGUIN OF THE 90'S) - Although I really actually do like the skating penguin a whole lot, I feel the infamous robo-penguin is much classier and noble. It was a back and forth on this one. QUEBEC NORDIQUES (TEAM ADDED) (LOGO TWEAKED) ORIGINAL LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I thought the original Nordiques logo needed to be touched up slightly. The darker red makes the lighter blue stand out to me. Hopefully to everyone else also. SAN JOSE SHARKS (SWITCH TO 25TH ANNIVERSARY SWIMMING SHARK) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: MY VERSION: - It's hard to go wrong with any of the sharks logos, so I chose to go with the version without a triangle behind. Love these damn logos, top notch. ST. LOUS BLUES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I wanted to go with the lighter blue for the inside, it just felt better than having the darker version. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (SWITCH TO ALTERNATE LOGO) (COLOR CHANGE) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: (ALTERNATE FROM LIGHTNING LOGO ARCHIVE) MY VERSION: - Didn't like the use of such a dark blue when I felt a lighter, more "electric" blue would look GREAT with a black jersey. (The letters and bolt(s) on the inside will stay white. Really brings the team identity to life. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (NO CHANGES MADE) VANCOUVER CANUCKS (SWITCH TO JOHNNY CANUCK LOGO AS PRIMARY) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ALTERNATE FROM CANUCKS LOGO ARCHIVE) - It does take a little getting used to seeing this guy in all his glory on the front of a jersey (pictures do exist), but it's well worth it, and I think it would finally give all Vancouver fans what they really wanted all along. WASHINGTON CAPITALS (MODIFIED ALTERNATE 'WEAGLE' LOGO AS PRIMARY) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: (ALTERNATE 'WEAGLE' FROM CAPITALS LOGO ARCHIVE) MY VERSION: - This really could be my favorite creation from the whole set. I was back and forth on if I should keep the sticks or not, but they balance out the 3 stars that represent the D.C. flag. WINNIPEG JETS (COLORS ALTERED) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I just don't believe the grey is necessary. Although it doesn't look bad on the logo as a whole, the current jerseys they use (beautiful in my eyes) don't really call for grey to be used, so I decided to make a more jersey friendly version. Don't miss out on the white outline that makes the whole thing look great on, you guessed it, those b e a u t i f u l jerseys!!! That's it (for now) Let me know what you guys think!!!!!!
  3. This was submitted to HJC for their hurricanes competition. I revived the flag striping pattern, and coloured the upper arm. C&C is appreciated!
  4. Many nights in the past few years, I've wondered, "Why am I not a dedicated Hurricanes fan?" I proudly support every other pro team in North Carolina, why are the Hurricanes the exception? Then it occurred to me, the team doesn't try to engage with the fanbase and citizens of North and South Carolina like the Panthers and Hornets do. It almost seems like the are content to be the isolated franchise, which they are, geographically, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't try and live up to the namesake of the CAROLINA Hurricanes. So this concept is somewhat me displaying what a Carolina-wide marketing campaign could look like, while also modernizing the Hurricanes logos. PLEASE put any criticisms you may have, because over the past few months there have been a wave of short, hyperboled comments that don't really advance the designer or community as a whole. But I'll get off my soapbox, and get onto the concept:
  5. So now that my nordiques logo is pretty much finished, I started a new project. The hurricanes have one of the worst logo and uniform in the league. So I gave them a fresh look. Alternate is a CH with flag warning logo. Anyways, thoughts?
  6. *WARNING* LONG POST TO FOLLOW So a new term has popped up around the CCSLC over the past few years. The term "Original 6 dress up." It seems to have originated with the Tampa Bay Lightning's unveil of their current uniform set in 2011 that aped the Maple Leafs' colours and the Red Wings' striping pattern and picked up steam when the Carolina Hurricanes just unveiled a new uniform set five days ago, part of which aped the Red Wings' colours and the Maple Leafs' striping pattern. Some have even applied it to the new Dallas Stars set because, despite their unique colour scheme, their new home uniform shares striping pattern similarities with the Rangers' and Blackhawks' home sweaters. Yet the term has also been retroactively applied to a wave of faux-retro uniform designs that have swept the league recently, with many people applying the term to uniforms unveiled as far back as 2003. Like most terms popularized here, such as "BFBS," "clown suits," and "POTD" many people have misappropriated the term "Original 6 dress up" to the point that when using it or discussing the arguments associated with it they no longer understand what exactly it means. So I thought I'd start this thread to both help explain the meaning and proper use of the term, as well as provide a single place for us to all discuss the trends that seem to have led to its emergence in the first place. First, a history lesson. The term "Original 6" refers to the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Now despite what the name says these teams are not the NHL's original six teams. In fact of the six only two, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs (then known as the Toronto Arenas), were founding NHL teams. The original five NHL teams included those two, the Montreal Wanderers, original Ottawa Senators, and the Quebec Bulldogs. The Bruins became the NHL's first American team in 1924, and the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Cougars (later Red Wings), and New York Rangers would join in 1926. The Wanderers folded during the NHL's first season, the Bulldogs moved to Hamilton and then to New York to become the Americans, the Montreal Maroons and Pittsburgh Pirates/Philadelphia Quakers joined, and the Ottawa Senators would move to St. Louis to become the Eagles. These teams all folded, mostly due to the Great Depression. The last of these teams to die off would be the New York Americans, who held on as the Brooklyn Americans for one year. At the end of the 1941-42 season they folded, leaving the NHL with six teams until 1967. These remaining six teams became known as the Original Six, as they made up the league during the advent of television, and thus many people who experienced the NHL for the first time in a mass media sense knew these six teams as the "original" NHL clubs. The name's stuck, even though only two of them were around since the start of the NHL. I mention all of this to perhaps instill the idea that while the "Original 6" were on their own during the NHL's first true golden age and have tons of history and tradition between them they are not the be-all-end-all of hockey tradition. Though not the same franchise as the original Senators the current Ottawa team is carrying a torch older then the NHL itself and the teams called the "Original 6." Are they playing "Original 6 dess up" with their fauxback alternate? No. They're honouring something much older. So let's really get down to it now that the mystique of the Original 6 has been tarnished a bit. We'll get started with the aesthetic side of things by looking at the current uniforms worn by the Original 6 teams. While the O6 teams have tweaked their looks over the years (some more then others) each team is currently wearing a uniform that, all in all, represents their traditional aesthetic. Boston Bruins Chicago Blackhawks Detroit Red Wings Montreal Canadiens New York Rangers Toronto Maple Leafs Ok, so those are the Original 6 teams looking like Original 6 teams. Now that we've all had a chance to take in what O6 teams look like let's turn our attention to the teams accused of playing "Original 6 dress up." We'll start with the ones that the term actually applies to. Carolina Hurricanes Tampa Bay Lightning Both these teams are doing a kind of pick and choose activity from O6 menu of design. The Lightning are wearing a Red Wings striping pattern in Maple Leafs colours and the Hurricanes are wearing a Maple Leafs striping pattern in Red Wings colours. Carolina Hurricanes explained Tampa Bay Lightning explained In both cases you have newer teams (the Lightning a 1992 expansion team, the Hurricanes the result of a 1997 relocation rebrand) using striping patterns AND colour schemes used by O6 teams. You could just go ahead and put the Lightning in full on Leafs templates and the Hurricanes in full on Red Wings templates and it wouldn't alter the overall design of either. And if you thought that the differences in striping between Lighting/Leafs and Hurricanes/Red Wings make enough of a difference so that you can tell them apart on the ice you would be mistaken. In the two years since the Lightning switched to their Original 6 dress up look Lightning/Maple Leafs games have become borderline unwatchable due to looking like inter-squad scrimmages. Pictured: Nonsense If you don't think that's bad, keep in mind it's a still image. Imagine two teams dressed like that playing at the fast pace you see in the NHL. The scrimmage effect becomes incredibly obvious. Given that the Lightning in Leafs colours and a Wings template was enough to cause that effect I can only assume the Hurricanes in Wings colours and a Leafs template will cause the same effect when the Red Wings visit Carolina. The Hurricanes and the Lightning further legitimize the term as it applies to them when you consider the men behind the rebrands of both teams. Steve Yzerman, the Lightning's General Manager, played for the Red Wings his entire career, winning three Stanley Cups with the team. Peter Karmanos Jr. owns the Hurricanes and is a Detroit native and life long Red Wings fan. Both teams even cited the Original 6 as "influences." The Lightning stated that they specified the blue they wanted to use as the same shade the Maple Leafs use and the PR word salad the Hurricanes' staff put out when they unveiled their set talked about the Original 6 being "an influence." In short both the Lightning and the Hurricanes use templates and colour schemes traditionally used by Original 6 teams, had redesigns spearheaded by people with sentimental attachments to the Original 6, and specifically mentioned the Original 6 as influences on their designs. If any two teams deserve to be labelled as playing "Original 6 dress up" it's these two for the above stated reasons. Now you'll notice that the Hurricanes' white road sweater does not follow the same pattern as their home reds. In addition to a different striping pattern they have also included black and silver to the striping scheme. Does the road Hurricanes uniform play "Original 6 dress up"? In a word, no. Simply having a straightforward striping pattern is not enough to qualify as playing "Original 6 dress up." Here's a snapshot of the NHL uniform-wise from the early 1990s to illustrate that point. http://nhluniforms.c...93/1992-93.html The NHL had twenty-four teams for the 1992-93 season. So eighteen teams employed some form of traditional striping. Were they playing "Original 6 dress up"? No. That's just the traditional aesthetic for a hockey sweater's design. No different then the way a baseball uniform is designed with a wordmark and number across the front. Simply having straightforward striping along the hem and sleeves of a sweater does not mean they are playing "Original 6 dress up." Any dislike of the Hurricanes' new road look is based on the fact that many, myself included, consider it underwhelming when compared to the the look they had prior to the redesign. That does not mean that they're playing "Original 6 dress up" though. It simply means for that team wearing something more unique and out there was preferable to something more expected. While the Hurricanes' red home sweater is a true case of "Original 6 dress up" the white road sweater is not. It may have failings in other areas, but it is not stealing an Original 6 team's look simply by having a simple striping pattern. Which brings us to the Dallas Stars and their new redesign. Dallas Stars Some people here cried foul and accused them of playing "Original 6 dress up" too. Probably not helped by the fact that they unveiled their look less then twelve hours after Carolina unveiled theirs. Well we have to ask. Are they? No. For many of the same reasons the Carolina Hurricanes' new white road sweater isn't. Simply having a traditional striping pattern does not mean the team is playing "Original 6 dress up." While the Dallas Stars' new home sweater has striping pattern similarities with the New York Rangers' and Chicago Blackhaws' home sweaters (see above) the Stars avoid playing "Original 6 dress up" by using a unique kelly green and black colour scheme. No one's going to mistake the Rangers and Stars. Had the Stars gone with their original plan of a red, white, and blue redesign maybe this would have happened, but as it is they went with kelly green and black, so it didn't. Besides, the Stars have a long history of using traditional striping patterns. http://nhluniforms.c...NorthStars.html So while the Hurricanes' road uniform and the Stars' redesign both employ traditional striping patterns that does not mean they're playing "Original 6 dress up." It simply means those uniforms use a striping pattern more in line with hockey aesthetic tradition which is not the same thing at all. CONTINUED IN PART II
  7. The Carolina Hurricanes unveiled their new uniforms this morning. Voice your approval or displeasure. My own opinion, they're a major downgrade and I'm disappointed. UPDATE: June 5th 2013 1:21AM PST Poll on the message boards titled "Do you like the new uniforms?" is currently leading with 77.78% No I'm not the least bit surprised.
