Report: NHL Expanding league, Adding 4 Teams by 2017

Milwaukee should have gotten an NHL team before Nashville, Columbus, or Anaheim did, but oops, my team's old owner was a peen. Sorry about that, Wisconsin, but it was worse for us than it was for you.

To me, the cloud that's looming over this whole discussion is that no matter where the NHL puts its teams, it does a really crappy job of marketing those teams. The talk of "growing the game" never extends beyond "we put a team here, so give them your money." The investments that teams have made in grassroots hockey have been woeful. You need to make the game as visible and accessible as you can; you need to make it so that hockey is a part of life in [insert place]. That kind of investment can pay off. Or you can just take expansion fees from Las Vegas, that too.

Whether it's causation or coincidence, my understanding from McCarthy and others is that high school hockey around Columbus has grown significantly since the Beej arrived. They host high school games at their practice rink, so when we went for a Saturday afternoon game, we watched the high schoolers play from the arena bar before going to watch the actual game. It was a very nice setup.

If, as a whole, they want to "reinvent" themselves again as a destination, great. However, a pro sports destination probably is just as unwise as was the "family destination" gimmick they tried with The Excalibur and MGM Grand amusement park circa 1990-95.

The town will never be the same. After the Tangiers, the big corporations took it all over. Today it looks like Disneyland. And while the kids play cardboard pirates, Mommy and Daddy drop the house payments and Junior's college money on the poker slots. In the old days, dealers knew your name, what you drank, what you played. Today, it's like checkin' into an airport. And if you order room service, you're lucky if you get it by Thursday. Today, it's all gone. You get a whale show up with four million in a suitcase, and some twenty-five-year-old hotel school kid is gonna want to take him to see the Edmonton Oilers.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Today, everything is different. There's no action. I have to wait around like everyone else. Can't even get decent food. Right after I got here I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup

And where did all the money come from to rebuild the pyramids? Junk bonds.

Yeah Joe Pesci pretty much played the same guy in both. Not a stretch by any means. Got whacked better in Casino IMO.

In a cornfield, nonetheless.

Is there a bad way to kill him?

But Casino was the sequel - came out five years after.

Anybody read Nicholas Pileggi's book Wiseguy? As great as the film, but in a very different style.

I've read it and actually still have it on my bookshelf. I liked the movie but thoroughly enjoyed the book.

If you build it, they will come... To beat a guy to death.
Too bad it wasn't with a couple hockey sticks instead of baseball bats. ;)

Portland and Salt Lake City both wouldn't work precisely because they support their NBA teams so well, they're both fairly small markets and you'd be directly attempting to compete with the one major pro game in town for an inherently limited amount of support and money.

I used to think this would be a problem in Portland. But then I read this piece this week by The Oregonian's John Canzano. In it, he reports that Paul Allen is willing and able to own an NHL franchise to play in the Moda Center (which was designed to accommodate the NHL along with an NBA team.) He just isn't interested in paying $1.4 billion for an overvalued expansion franchise when he could probably get a relocating existing franchise for around $250 million.

The column also points out that the Blazers -- whose president once oversaw the L.A. Kings -- would be able to bundle sponsorship deals for both franchises, providing not only value for advertisers but close to twice the exposure.

As for Vegas, here's what i don't get: Most of the arguments in favor of this move highlight how the building would be filled each night thanks to casinos who can use ticket comps as another perk for their gambling customers. But how much sense does it make to have a hockey franchise built not upon a devoted fanbase but on freebies? That might work at first, but it doesn't sound like a sustainable business.

Is Milwaukee capable of supporting 3 professional teams?

Milwaukee supports three professional teams now. But to answer what I think you're asking, I think all NHL to Milwaukee scenarios take for granted that the Bucks are on their way out.

The tweet that "broke" the non-story stated that the $1.4 Billion in question is the total, combined, amount the 4 entries would be charged. In other words, $350 Million each.

Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends. Sounds like something from a Rocky & Bullwinkle story arc.

To the people saying that no one would go to a sporting event in vegas and waste 3-4 hours sitting and watching... you are fools.

How many people go to UFC and Boxing matches? There are so many different things to do in Vegas besides gambling, I think putting a team there would be a real gamble with a high pay out if done correctly.

I still stand against the idea of Milwaukee getting a hockey team ever. The Packers are the only franchise the state takes seriously, almost religiously - and I don't blame them, the Packers are great. The Brewers are perennial middle pack in the central and the Bucks are just....hopefully moving to Seattle.

You can't compare a hockey game to a boxing match or a UFC fight card night thing (? I don't watch UFC) They are two completely different sporting events.

Yes there are other things to do in Vegas besides gamble, but a hockey game isn't one of them nor should be one of them.
