2014-15 NCAA Basketball Thread: March Madness

Yeah, saw those highlights on the local news. How does that happen? You'd think you would luck into scoring a point per minute.

It's amazing how Georgia Tech (and UGA, and to a lesser degree, the other state schools) can be so bad-to-mediocre year after year, despite all this basketball talent the state has (at least, what I hear).

I only saw the 2nd half as I got home from work (ACC 3rd tier rights are on free TV and local west coast affiliate stations buy the rights).

That said, UVa runs the packline defense, which I illustrated a few seasons ago. They play defense great.

However, the NCAA mandate on calling fouls from last season has been ignored this year. Scoring is down 6% from last year and according to KPI Sports, it has been down since Nov. 2013.

I was at the Arizona-Stanford game tonight, and unlike my trip to Berkeley last year, it was awesome.

Speaking of Cal, man have they fallen apart. They beat Cuse in November, but have lost to CSU-Bakersfield, and last to PAC-12 cellar dwellers WSU and USC. Now mediocre at best ASU is clobbering them 61-30 as I type.

A conversation between Boeheim and Syracuse's AD. (How I imagine it)

AD: "What are the prospects of making the NCAA Tournament this year?"

Boeheim: "Not good."

AD: "We can't take a risk and let scandal catch up to us. Let's self impose now."

Boeheim: "Wait, what?" I mean, if we win 3/4 of the remaining games, we can sneak..."

AD: "Nope, this year. No ACC Tournament or anything."

Boeheim: "Well, I didn't like Greensboro anyway."

They're like the Sharks, beating the top opponents(Utah, Gonzaga, SD State), yet the losses have been to mediocre at best squads.

People have asked me the last two years why I wanted the Big XII championship so much. They say it's meaningless and that I should only care about the big dance. Well I knew last year and am pretty sure this year that we will be lucky to reach the second weekend. I don't know what it is but we're just not as good these last two years.

Jim Boeheim must really hate the hotels and restaurants of the greater Greensboro area.

Syracuse decides a self-imposed postseason ban due to the ongoing NCAA investigation.

And today the hammer fell on Syracuse:

My yearly plug for mid-major basketball - if anybody's interested, the Big South tournament is airing on ESPN3 all weekend. My Winthrop Eagles play at 2:30ish.

Currently an upset alert as #9 Longwood is leading #1 Charleston Southern 48-42 with 7 minutes and some change left.

[edit] aaaand Charleston Southern is now officially the first team in the NIT, losing to Longwood 68-60.

I was able to go to "the Barn" (Williams Arena, U of Minn) and watch Wisconsin claim its first Big Ten title since 2008.

That's it for my expectations. A five-player team cannot make it to the Final Four.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

When will the NCAA learn that vacating wins is the dumbest punishment ever.

It is, but at the same time, in this case it seems somewhat appropriate. In another year or so Jim Boeheim would be celebrating his 10,000th win. Now he's pushed back below 900, which will delay that for some years, if not keep it from ever happening.

its like the olympics taking away medals (for one person who used steroids or something). if that was the case, need to take away the medals from every eastern bloc country from say 1960-1988.

so long and thanks for all the fish.

Now that it's March, time for my famous Championship previews.

One bid up for grabs today...

Ohio Valley - Nashville, TN

#3 Belmont Bruins vs. #1 Murray State Racers

Records

BEL: 21-10 (11-5)

MURR: 27-4 (16-0)

It's been a few years since traditional OVC power Murray State has ruled the conference and boy, did they come back with a vengeance. Armed with a 25 game winning streak, the Racers cracked the top 25 this week and looks to finish the job against upset minded Belmont. The Bruins, coming off an upset of defending champ Eastern Kentucky, are in their third straight OVC final after joining the league from the Atlantic Sun. They've won once (2012) and lost last year's final. Can they pull off another upset or does Murray State race away with the OVC crown?

The Ivy League bid will probably be decided today as well. Yale is in with a win or Harvard loss. It will go to a one game playoff if Harvard wins and Yale loses.

Huge game for the Illini. Two bubble teams (with Purdue feeling a little better) with a chance to get a big win to close out the regular season. And hopefully Michigan State knocks off Purdue so we can avoid Wisconsin's side of the bracket in the B1G tournament.

Yeah, I was watching that game as I typed that too.

Here's to another another NIT where we can't even host our home games.
