2014 NCAA Football Thread

I guess the overwhelming belief that the important thing is for PSU to remain a top-notch program prevailed.

Aside from the downfall of The Enabler, everything's the same at Penn State.

How is everything the same at penn state? Are they not reporting child rapes or orchestrating elaborate coverups for other horrific crimes?

How is everything the same if nobody associated with the incident is there?

An institution that tries to cover up child molesters. Get punished for it and get it lifted by the power that be because obviously their thinking.... I dunno what they hell their thinking.

Having a semblance of understanding of the situation beyond what Fox/ESPN/CNN/etc. have said about the case would help.

First, not a single NCAA rule was broken in the incident. Second, The crimes committed by Sandusky, and alleged (since there haven't been convictions yet) crimes of Spanier, Curley, and Schultz have been handled by the criminal court, where it should be handled. There isn't a shred of credible evidence besides the report of Louis Freeh, who is an absolute hack (botched the Atlanta Bombing Investigation in 96, botched the recent FIFA investigation). For those who say Paterno is guilty because he didn't do more, you are wrong. Reporting an incident to superiors who are trained at how to handle these situations is almost always the correct procedure (that way, if the claim is wrong, there won't be lawsuits like crazy). Unfortunately, in this case, the superiors happened to screw everything up. Three people committing a coverup is hardly an "institution-wide" thing.

There are a million more things I could mention, because it is such a complex issue, but here's a link to a great article by Malcolm Gladwell as to why the Sandusky case isn't this "open and shut" incident that the media made it out to be.

In regards to lifting the sanctions, from day one, the NCAA has said that if Penn State complied with the recommendations outlined by Louis Freeh in his report, then the University would receive scholarships back, and the bowl ban could be lifted. They also hired George Mitchell (yes, the Mitchell Report guy) to commence an investigation on these recommendations. His report acknowledged that Penn State has already completed 115 of 119 recommendations (and are in the process of completing 3 more). This is what the NCAA is basing their decision on.

Also, just a note, according to the Crimes Against Children Research Center, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys are victims of sexual abuse. If you really care about helping victims, I'd suggest examining what's going on in your own towns rather than acting like the Penn State incident is something that is uncommon.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

After starting 0-2 by a total score of 88-6, June Jones resigns from SMU.

According to his agent, Leigh Steinberg via Twitter,

"June had felt for some time he had accomplished his mission to turn around program and needed a break."

What? Losing a combined 88-6?

No... It has to do with what has happened at SMU even though they were sent to the proverbial woodshed these in the first two games.

I'm pretty sure that when you talk to most people about SMU football, they bring up the scandal that took down the program. It wasn't until Jones became the coach that the program was in good shape once again.

He felt like he's done his job... but, couldn't you wait until after the season to call it quits? It seems kind of petty to jump ship after two games.

The sanctions were wrong because it punished former, current, and future players that had nothing to do with the scandal.

Well, what else are they supposed to do, taking away things that happened during that era? That doesn't really do much since you can't just shuffle history around like that.

(Well, unless you're the Hornets.)

Thank you, BBTV! What else was Penn State supposed to do? They got rid of all that were involved and/or in the know. They are now 2 coaching regimes removed from it. Some of you guys who have such holier than though attitudes and think they shouldn't have a program anymore should get over yourselves. It's ridiculous.

The people who were at fault were already punished. Why punish innocent student-athletes?

Part of the point of sanctions like that is to diminish the strength of the program so that it's not so big and so powerful that people would even THINK of covering up horrible acts just to keep the machine going. Additionally, sanctions are supposed to encourage change. Well everyone involved is dead, in jail, mysteriously disappeared, unemployed, or sitting as governer (for another couple of months anyway), so the sanctions don't hurt them. The school instituted 114 of 119 changes (part of which creates a level of oversight above and beyond what pretty much every other school has), and certainly realizes that another slip-up would warrant the death penalty.

To say that things are the same at Penn State is uninformed at least.

Remember when the consensus was the program should have taken at least a year off, if not been eliminated altogether?

He's been checked out ever since he had and then lost the Arizona State job in less than an hour.

Charlie Strong's first season still continues to get worse. WR Jaxson Shipley is unlikely to play, thus making 6 of the projected 11 offensive starters out for various reasons: injury, suspension, dismissal, voluntarily leaving the program.

And they may have contacted a former HS starter who is just a typical sophomore who is in SAE, in regards to walking on at QB.

I don't think he is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and is working on a Formula SEA car. If he was, he most likely would not have time for football, social life, academics, and formula car.

There is no other way to punish programs that do wrong. Should NCAA programs just be allowed to do whatever they want because we don't want to punish the players?

And yeah, the individual people involved were brought to justice, but it was the INSTITUTION of Penn State football that above all enabled Sandusky. The institution needed to be made an example of as well.

Watching College Gameday (I think they have an unhealthy obsession with NDSU) this morning and they were talking about all the famous NFL players that have come from FCS/D1-AA. They kept talking about Randy Moss, but Randy's Sophomore and final year was in FBS/D1-A when Marshall jumped into the MAC. Besides he signed to Notre Dame, got in trouble and moved to Florida State and got redshirted as a freshman, got in more trouble, and moved to FCS Marshall so he wouldn't lose a year of eligibility. Shoot he finished 4th in the Heisman ballot in 1998!

Cardinals -- Rams -- Blues -- Tigers -- Liverpool

I think it's a very healthy obsession as they are a great team. What I don't understand is why they're at THIS game. Incarnate Word was a D-II team, and I believe they are still in a transition phase. Next week, NDSU plays Montana which would've been a much better game to have Gameday at.

EDIT: Incarnate Word is fully D-I now, my bad.
