The sad tale of the Rangers over the last three years shows how important it is to win a championship when you get to that round. They lost the 2010 World Series to an unremarkable Giants team, then blew multiple late leads in game 6 against the Cardinals before packing it in and not showing up for game 7. Then it was the collapse in 2012, the collapse in 2013, and the bottom completely falling out last season. It looked like the Rangers were going into a long period of dominance, but their glory days lasted all of five years.

It's strange to think that back around 2011 or so, I thought the Phillies and Rangers has built up the organizations and fanbases enough that they would permanently join the Yankees and Red Sox at the upper echelon of baseball (not in terms of national status, just always making the playoffs and having huge payrolls). The Phillies blew arguably the best pitching staff of all time in 2011 and then were allowed to get really old, while the Rangers just kinda crumbled after allowing Nolan Ryan to leave. There's a lot of dark days ahead for both franchises.

His place of birth is wrong, though. He was born in Southern California (It says he was born at Hoag Hospital in Irvine, but I've heard him say he was born at the Hoag in Newport Beach more than once, and the Hoag in Irvine didn't open until 2010).

Will Ferrell has a Baseball Reference page now.

The best are the "transactions", mainly the washing machine trade and the churros.

Nah, the best is Claimed off waivers by Cincinnati Reds, Norm MacDonald released.

And yes, you're right Buc.

Ehh, that 2010 team was probably my absolute favorite team of all time, but there really wasn't much remarkable about that starting lineup. The pitching was absolutely insane that year (Madison Bumgarner was basically just out of kindergarten and made a really good Rangers lineup look downright foolish), but they were starting Pat "The poon hound" Burrell and spelling him with Nate Scherholz the minute they took a lead. Aubrey Huff was starting at first for that team, too. Not exactly murderers row. I mean, :censored:, Cody Ross earned himself SEVENTEEN at bats that series after getting flat out dumped by an awful Marlins team just a few months prior. Edgar Rentaria won MVP of the series at 90 years old.

No, I take that back. That was ABSOLUTELY my favorite team of all time. The fact that they won with that lineup was downright cockamamie. Probably the worst starting 8 I've ever seen win the World Series.

Definitely not as patchwork as last years team who started Travis Ishikawa in left for five games, but I still think they would've probably beat that 2010 team in three.

Like a week or so ago, the Braves pitchers combined for a no-hitter and still didn't win the game. And yesterday, their split-squad games against Detroit and the Mets totaled up to two losses and a combined score of 25-4.

Yeah, spring games don't mean anything, but this isn't doing much to offset the thoughts of the locals that the Braves will be hot garbage this season...

Their goal is to be competitive by the time their new park opens up. That I think has been made very clear from their recent transactions.

Pitching wise I don't think they're that bad. Solid 1-4 starters, arguably the best closer in the game in Craig Kimbrel with a setup man in Jason Grilli that himself could probably close for roughly 1/3 of the teams out there.

But where are the runs going to come from? That lineup wasn't that great last year, and now they're minus Justin Upton, Evan Gattis and Jayson Heyward. Those are three of their top four hitters from last year. Outside of Freeman there's no longer any power threat in that lineup. Its nice if Nick Markakis can get on base. How is he going to score if Freeman isn't the one to drive him in? Best I can tell they're banking on Chris Johnson not being a one hit wonder and drawing more then one walk a week.

Biggest question I have for this year is are they going to be prime candidates for a fire sale come July 31st. They already had a minor one this offseason. I don't think any team got worse this offseason short term at least then Atlanta. But if they're thinking 2017, who really figures into that? Do you deal Craig Kimbrel knowing that this year he will have as much value on the trade market as he ever will? There's also not much point in having a lights out closer if your not going to at least be above .500

Same thing with Andrelton Simmons. Guy can't hit and not too many guys remain great defensive shortstops once they hit 30 and he's 25 right now. Even if the Braves never move him, what are the odds he's still the starting shortstop by 2017? If that OPS drops below .600 I don't care how good the guy is defensively, probably should start looking at other options.

Its also not like their farm system is lighting the world on fire either and unless there's someone out there who everyone outside of the Atlanta organization is overlooking right now, they don't seem to have any bats down there either.

I will say this though with Atlanta, John Hart has done everything in his power to make sure that he will never be in a situation like he was in Cleveland, which was one starting pitcher short of a World Series ring. Jaret Wright and a rookie CC Sabathia was as close as those Indian teams ever came to having a true staff ace. If Atlanta can somehow find a way of adding offensive either through trades or free agency and Teheran and Wood continue to pitch like they did last year, that team could turn things around very quickly.

Its also pretty obvious that the current roster isn't the type of team John Hart wants either. The Braves wouldn't have made all of those trades if it was. But if he's capable of taking the train wreck that was the 1991 Cleveland Indians and have them in the World Series four years later, he can do the same with Atlanta. Who knows? We could very well be looking at a renewal of the Civil War rivalry between the Mets and Braves in a few years.

Blue Jays' Kevin Pillar is out for a week after injuring his oblique while sneezing.

It's gonna be one of those years, isn't it?

a. Good? I've got Dalton Pompey on my fantasy team, I'd love to see as many starts as possible. :winner:

b. One of those years?? I think you meant every year.

Well, if you were going to correct it you should have made it read "a Giants team", but whatever. I'm not insulting the Giants, just saying it wasn't like they ran into a juggernaut in the series.
