I read a pretty good quip on it just a minute ago.

"It's all part of the 12 step program. Once you're 12 steps out of the building, they fire your ass."

I really hope USC at least does what they can to get him some help rather than just kicking him to the curb and leaving him to his own devices.

And I get why they fired him, I really do. While you can't be fired for leaving to seek medical treatment, you definitely can be fired for being intoxicated on the job, especially when it's a second offense. And after the report surfaced this morning, USC basically has to do this because I'm sure more is going to come out about his past antics and they needed to do some damage control.

I just really hope that USC does the humane thing and at least provides him with some sort of a safety net (IE a severance package conditional on him getting him some help rather than firing him for cause).

Addiction is a mother:censored:er, and almost nobody can get through something like that on their own.

I do not like Florida but that is a shame. Hopefully they still contend without him.

I think they can about as well as they could with him -- although I think they've played above their heads quite a bit. I'm not concerned with how it affects the team short-term. Grier, outside of the Mississippi game, has been more of a game manager with some really good flashes. Long-term I think, or thought anyways, Grier was going to be an elite QB in McElwain's system -- I don't think Treon Harris has similar upside. I don't know what his future holds now, though. At the moment, though, the two were similar enough in regards to overall ability that there was a QB competition up through week three, so as long as Treon doesn't turn the ball over, I think he'll be fine. They basically have a two game lead in the division, and if they beat LSU or Georgia they're in great shape.

Steve Spurrier is retiring, effective immediately.

Hope he takes a studio job. He always cracks me up, even though it's at Georgia's expense half the time.

2-4 is bad, but I wouldn't be surprised if his wife, Jerri, wanted out and didn't want to live in flood ravaged Columbia, SC where hundreds of roads and bridges are still closed.

What a bad day to be the head coach at USC.

Also, I can't believe he's already been at South Carolina for 12 seasons. It seriously feels like he just got fired from Florida.

I'm a little confused as to why he did it in the middle of the season, but I suspect it was to give them a lot of time to find a new coach, and another big part is that he pry just didn't have the energy to worry about a struggling team like that. I haven't been around long enough to really see Spurrier in action a lot, but I've always liked the guy.

See my comment above about his wife.

Happy wife, happy life.

Ahh yes. That's right. I was at one of those virtual indoor golf courses at the time. I think I was in middle school.

Dang, I always respected him as a coach. It must have taken something real strong for him to resign so suddenly.

I was thinking it may have been some kind of health issue, but I don't exactly know.

He'll probably never admit to it, but he probably retired due to age.

Their game with Missouri last year, South Carolina scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter to go up 19-7. "The Card" says to go for two to go up 14, but they kicked the PAT to go up 20-7. Missouri winds up winning the game 21-20. Spurrier was asked why they didn't go for two, and his reply was basically "I forgot.". Then, he had that impromptu press conference shortly before the season where his big announcement was that he was of sound mind and in good physical shape for being the coach and dealing with all the responsibilities that come with being a college coach.

It's not just Michigan. Bama, Tennessee, Florda State, etc. If they've got a stadium bigger than an NFL stadium, it's usually for a reason and usually put to full use.

There were more Michigan Wolverines fans in their stadium than in several NFL counterparts.

Coming from a Canadian, how did the "minor league" become more popular than the pros? They have marching bands too.

More affordable tickets, student sections and their need for cheap tickets, and a general institutional emphasis on butts in seats over individual accommodations (i.e. most NFL stadia have individual seats, while colleges still use bleachers).
