NFL Merry-Go-Round: Relocation Roundelay

That logo is pretty sweet, but did they have to rip off the Rams colors? Say what you will about how gross the move is, but the logo is nice.

Sounds like StubHub is a reality! This will be a super fun experiment in what capacity an NFL team actually needs to be successful.

When did NFL ownership turn into SimFootball? This feels like we're en route to a series of crazy dominoes falling.

If you're in a semi-struggling market or have a stadium less than a decade old, best of luck to you.

LA Radio stations just did a "power rankings" of the local teams in terms of popularity. Clearly this is subjective. But such subjective opinions from public sources can have some influence on reality.

Lakers

Dodgers

UCS FB

Rams

UCLA BB

Clippers

Kings

Angels

Ducks

Chargers

Galaxy

LAFC

To be fair, once you get past the Rams and UCLA its a crapshoot based on preference.

Exactly. If Los Angeles was so damn important to the Chargers like the Spanoses said 10 or so years ago, they should've just moved there already. Instead, they've just sat on their hands until it became apparent that the Rams wanted to come back, then they kicked up a stink about that, then the Rams did move back, and now they're going to be the pre-Chris Paul-and-Blake Griffin Clippers. It's oh so appropriate that their abbreviation will be "LAC."

As for San Diego, I can't help but think whether another Big 4/MLS team eventually comes to San Diego to fill the Chargers' void. While I'm not one to ordinarily vouch for southern markets in the NHL, the support the AHL Gulls have led me to think that San Diego could have an outside chance at an NHL team (if, of course, they can get an ownership group and a new arena). Maybe that's where the Las Vegas Golden Knights wind up. I dunno.

Yeah the Gulls have shown there is enough support for hockey in SD to maybe make it work if an owner steps forward with an arena plan. And it has the benefit of being the one Big 4 sport that's never given SD a shot.

I hope the NFL never ever expands/relocates to Canada. It may be a great world-wide marketing machine but with the worst collection of capitalist owners. They blackmail the taxpayers into building their own playpens or they take off to another city with the team name and colours their long-time passionate fans have lived and died with.

Thank goodness for my BC Lions and the CFL.

If you're in a semi-struggling market or have a stadium less than a decade old, best of luck to you.

Jacksonville and Oakland seem like they're living on borrowed time. Buffalo is mighty tenuous, and their only saving grace is that the Pegulas have seemed very committed to Buffalo. That said, if Buffalo can't work out a stadium deal, they might even feel the heat.

For the longest time, the NFL was able to keep teams in place by the fact that you were able to locate an NFL team in just about any city, and it would be financially viable. Even if you struggled to sell out your stadium 8 times a year, the TV revenue ensured that every team stayed afloat regardless of location. But with teams clearly seeking to move around to maximize revenue (and perhaps make up for impending lost revenue due to sagging TV ratings), those days are over.

It'll be very interesting to see what happens in a decade or so, once the wave of stadiums built in the late 90's and early 2000's start reaching 30 years old, and team owners start claiming that their stadiums are "out of date." I'd expect another series of relocation rumors around that time. Seems we're getting a flurry of relocations every 20 years or so in the NFL now.

This is a terrible, terrible move but they're the Chargers. I'm a Chargers fan.

I'm hoping against hope they make this work.

You have a perfect get out of jail free card with the Chargers thanks to this move.

Even though you're not from SD I don't think anyone will fault you and any other Chargers fan on the planet for jumping ship.

Or possibly socialist owners.

Yep, it's official.

And the Galaxy has reached out to supporters with an open letter:

Quote

LA Galaxy Supporters,

The LA Galaxy are excited to welcome the Los Angeles Chargers to StubHub Center for the 2017 NFL season.

StubHub Center is, and will continue to be, the home of the LA Galaxy. This stadium belongs to you. We believe that StubHub Center is a cathedral for soccer in North America, and that will not change. Our fans are paramount to this club and this decision was made with you in mind.

The Chargers playing at StubHub Center this season will benefit the LA Galaxy and our supporters. Having the Chargers playing at StubHub Center will allow us to invest and upgrade our state-of-the-art facility and game day experience.

We will work diligently with StubHub Center to uphold and maintain the integrity of our field and the authenticity of the soccer experience at StubHub Center. This investment will ensure that we have additional infrastructure to support the Galaxy, Galaxy II, our Academy and each and every fan of our club in Southern California.

We are excited about the start of the 2017 MLS season and look forward to seeing you soon.

Go Galaxy,

Chris Klein

What's going to be great, is watching them play there and it be half empty. And mark my words they will not sell out every game. Not with the crap team they field and the fact they have very few fans in LA (and very few coming up from SD).

They're going to sell out every game. Let's not be silly here. The stadium only seats 27,000. That stadium will get filled up by opposing fans, at a minimum.

The Chargers have a new campaign to "Fight for LA".

Edit: The website lists Stubhub as their temporary home.

The "Who We Are" statement on that page is hilarious. You have been in LA for 3 and a half minutes. You don't know who the F you are. Let alone who or what LA is.

The logo is nice though. A little Cleo McDowell in execution, but I dig it. Still dumb.

I can't believe people actually like that logo. It's absolute GARBAGE. And it gives the vibe that they're not only ditching powder blue, but also yellow. God I :censored:ing hate the Chargers.

I'm planning a trip to LA in March. I want to buy a hat with that logo.

They should have changed the colors though. They need some distance from the Rams and San Diego. But the modified Dodgers logo, obvious as it is, is so elegantly done. I think that's especially hard to do because the electricity thing can become so hokey quickly.

I've though about that.

I've been a Chargers fan for as long as I've been paying attention to NFL football though. And I don't even really have any sort of connection to San Diego. It's obviously the best home for the team, but my loyalty is to the team itself, not its locale. I'll root for the Chargers in San Diego, Los Angeles, or Sioux Falls.

Now if they drop the Chargers identity entirely? I'm out. There's nothing left that I would be loyal to. So long as they're the Chargers though? I'm a fan. For better or worse.

It's crazy...I have no ties at all to San Diego, but I became a Charger and Clipper fan by the time I started middle school...the Rams were total :censored: (not unlike today), the Lakers were entering the first post-Magic era (although I still followed them as a second team until the Shaq-Kobe nonsense got too annoying), and I never liked the Raiders.  That said, beyond the money aspect (which even then is a bit of a stretch), it just makes no sense that they're moving up here.  Part of me is holding out on that glimmer of chance that the other owners would block the move, but Jerry and friends aren't turning down their cut of that $850 million (WTF!?) relocation money.

A sad day indeed...hell, it matches the gloomy weather we got here currently.

That couldn't happen. Spanos was already essentially given permission to move to LA when they granted him the year-long option last off-season when they approved the Rams' relocation. Spanos could move if he wanted to, and no one could stop him. Best anyone could do would be to convince him not to exercise the option by the deadline.

Of course he really couldn't do that either, because that would have meant he'd have to negotiate with the city of San Diego in good faith. And Deano doesn't play like that :P

Wonder why the Chargers couldn't play in the Rose Bowl? Cost or fear that it wouldn't fill up?

The neighborhood limits the number of events that the Rose Bowl can hold.
