He didn’t want them in his stadium in the first place; letting them out certainly serves everybody’s interests. He’ll amost certainly extract a financial penalty for the privilege, since he holds all the cards, but in the end, he wants the Chargers gone more than anyone else I the world. Better to negotiate a token one-time payment than contintinue to flounder and fail in LA.

He rephased the project, rebudgeted key elements of it, and then executed contracts with a bunch of corporate partners with language specifying that the site would host 20 NFL games per year.  He can't to do it now even if he wanted to.

That's a possible solution.

But there’s an easier one - just ask Stan Kroenke to release them from their obligations.

Whatever the Chargers owe to the NFL itself for moving to LA can be dismissed with a wave of the owners’ collective hand. There are no laws holding the Chargers in the market, only league rules and conditions they applied arbitrarily and which can be removed just as easily. Goodell will just have to get over his desire to punish Kroenke, and then the Rams can get busy solidifying the market.

Football isn’t baseball or soccer. It’s a television sport, not boosted by the local rivalries that boost interest and attendance in other sports. There’s simply no reason to insist on two teams in LA. If the third-largest market in the country can get by just fine with only one team, then so can the second.

Agreed, Everyone feels Chargers are locked into Los Angeles permanently because of market size, stadium, lease, TV contract  and so on.  That's malarkey it's making the league look like crap not to mention if it's cutting into the revenue, & brand of a franchise they will do what needs to be done to fix it. They stopped the Raiders from returning to LA which did the league a huge favor ( in their eyes), so I don't see how they wouldn't want to work with Spano to get him into a better situation. ( San Diego or elsewhere)

I kinda hope they do. While I always have and likely always will love the game of football and its excitement, I really don’t care for the NFL itself and would love to see it go down in flames.

This is where I’m at with it. I kinda feel like they should have to pay to an extent for the level of arrogance they’ve shown. Based on nothing more than principle, really.

It seemed like they were for a while but that only lasted a year. Now the NFL is right back on track because principles can only carry everyone so far when the games are fun. No one around Chicago is gonna stake any moral high ground against this dumbass league now that the Bears look good again.

Anyway, the Rams and only the Rams should have been gone after 2014, once Kroenke announced that he was building the stadium to end all stadiums in Hollywood Park, it was all over and there was nothing the NFL could do about it but make a complete hash of it to placate the stupid Chargers.

Sure he can.  Everything’s negotiable.

Besides, I’m not sure at all that the Rams contracts with vendors and advertisers specify 20 games.  The teams are handling suites and PSLs individually.   And the project hasn’t yet locked in a naming rights sponsor or their “cornerstone sponsors”, which are the ones most likely to be affected by the reduction from one team to two.

I don’t see any real impediment there.  Certainly not from Kroenke’s perspective, if it means not having to share the profits from his development with the partners forced upon him.  He was willing to go it alone before, for a very good reason.

If Goodell was really serious about keeping the Chargers in San Diego he would have personally bankrolled the Measure C campaign and force the owners to knock on doors.  There was clearly no major effort on the league's part and for the league to act shocked that the Spani exercised an option instead of only using it as a bargaining chip is as naive as you can get.

If you didn't want the Chargers to leave all you had to do was get Dean in a room and inform him that he's not to pull the trigger and that the league would help him out.  Playing the blindside panic card is laughable.

They're already in the general part of the LA area so their best hope might be to recruit Raider fans by rebranding as the Inglewood Ice Cubes.

They should rename themselves the Clippers and let the basketball team keep the Chargers name and identity.

It would provide the basketball team with a great new look, and it would give the football team a constant reminder about how much their owner sucks.

They are... but then again, they aren't.  There is one scenario where the Chargers could get out... they could find a team that wants to take their place and is willing to assume its obligations, then do a franchise swap, a la the Philadelphia Eagles/Pittsburgh Pirates swap in 1940 or the Baltimore Colts/Los Angeles Rams swap in 1973.  Perhaps a Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals or Buffalo Bills decide to leave.  They make an overture to Spanos (or whomever owns them at that point) and cut a deal:  the Jags/Bengals/Bills assume the L.A. obligations, freeing up the Chargers to go back to San Diego, or to go to some other market.

It wouldn't necessarily be a smart play, but it's one that's at least technically possible.

This was my initial thought. As much as @Claystation360 doesn't want to hear it, I think of all the current NFL owners out there today Khan is the least tied to his community compared to the Bills and Bengals. I could the Jaguars move to San Diego and swap franchises with the Spanos so we have the San Diego Chargers back and LA could be the Jaguars or whatever.

But, that's so complicated and far fetched I'm just banking on the Chargers being the NFL's equivalent to the Clippers for the next 40 years.

The Chargers aren't moving, and if for some pie in the sky one a million reason they would, it wouldn't be back to San Diego. The two teams most likely to move in the next 10 years are the Jaguars and Bengals.

Just a lot of wasted breath in here.

I'm not sure why this isn't computing:

Yes, the NFL in its obsession with money and popularity is going let the Chargers move back to San Diego, reducing the Chargers potential fanbase from 20 million people to 3 million(roughly speaking) where a publicly funded stadium will never happen.

The Chargers will never be able to build a fanbase? Tell that to the Clippers who for 30 years were the biggest joke in sports run by the worst ownership ever.

There's a reason the Jets, Mets, White Sox etc. have never left despite being the secondary teams.

The league and owners(who control the league) will never "force" a team to leave a larger market for a smaller market for the dangerous precedent it would set...for themselves.

You're ignoring the social, political, and most importantly economic facts of the situation.

That's just not the way the real world works, especially not with the NFL in the 21st century.

In an area with 20 million people, that supports 2 pro basketball teams, 3 baseball teams, 2 hockey teams, 2 soccer teams, which was able to support THREE NFL teams 30 years ago(before 2 terrible owners forced their way out of the area), in addition to countless minor and secondary teams, the Chargers won't be able to carve out a fanbase(Counting what they will retain from San Diego) and fill a stadium 8 times a year, got it.

No team is going to make more money being a San Diego team than it will an LA team, it's like saying water isn't wet.

I mean, that's the whole reason the Chargers moved in the first place..

Maybe because there are currently multiple reports about the owners getting together to discuss what a giant mistake it was for the chargers to move to LA and to further discuss what they can do about it?

I don't know... That's my guess.

You need about three solid lines of asterisks if you want to talk about how  Southern California supported three teams before. The Chargers flipped the bird to everyone south of Camp Pendleton since then, and the Rams and Raiders have actual history in LA. Who is signing up for the Chargers bandwagon right now?

Which article was that?  I haven't seen it.

Even so, contracts are made to be renegotiated.  Nobody is going to let that be the final stumbling block if they have an opportunity to fix this mistake.

I haven't either, but it aligns with what has been 'reported' on PFT:

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/10/18/chargers-wont-be-leaving-l-a-for-at-least-two-decades/

It's where I sit.

NFL owners discussing the finances of teams, and how to maximize profitability?

There's NO CHANCE... NO CHANCE IN HELL that the league moves the Chargers back to San Diego.

Think of the precedent that would set.  Some city might not negotiate in good faith with whatever team is trying to extort them because they feel that the league will give them the team back in a year or two.

I'm going to repeat what I said in the Angels thread.

The Chargers basically have a market from the Mexican border in the south to Santa Barbara in the North, stretching 230 miles North to South with 20 million people.

20 million people.

With a brand new stadium being likened to the Death Star.

With the NFL's TV contact, and everything else that comes with being an NFL team.

They will not "fail".
