The 49ers should have built a new stadium at Candlestick Point and played elsewhere in the meantime. But since they didn't, I hope the city at least puts affordable housing there.

Ehh, Candlestick Point is still kind of an objectively terrible spot to place a sports stadium for several reasons. The weather is well known for being miserable year round in that specific location due to the wind, and traffic was absolutely horrific on game/event days. The Niners screwed up a lot in their move to Levis Stadium, but leaving Candlestick Point is very low on that list IMO.

A gut reno is still a reno.

Disagree. Nothing of the original stadium remains. The colonnade was essentially a separate structure which is why it was preserved. Renovation implies that the original was simply updated.

Hell the location they chose in Santa Clara wasn't even objectively bad. It was just what they did with it.

The only reason that Candlestick got a park to begin with was that the Giants’ brass visited on an abnormally decent day.

Also, Stoneham was an idiot who needed other people (e.g., Walter O’Malley and Carl Hubbell) to keep him from terrible decisions. There’s also a long history of 1960s politicking and corruption in San Francisco to explain Candlestick, but that’s a story for another day.

It’s a shame too because the location of Kezar would’ve made for one of those Wrigley/Fenway types of stadiums had they been able to work in modern day  infrastructure. I’m not sure it was possible back then and it damn sure isn’t now, but I’ve always wondered what could’ve been had they tried to stay there instead of moving out near Daily City.

The microclimates of San Francisco are really quite fascinating.

It's not that I thought Candlestick would have been a great place for another stadium or that it was even great for the first, rather that there just aren't a lot of other places for a football stadium in that little thumbnail of a city.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Another idiotic idea for a new Raiders or 49ers stadium site: Treasure Island. Being stuck on the bay bridge all day would be joyous especially after paying the bridge toll on the Oakland side & then paying for parking on top of that. Of course there would be multiple ferries transporting fans to the site.

Truth. But with the Raiders reportedly telling season ticket holders a week before the NFL deadline that they have no home yet and that Oakland is out of the running... They may end up playing on a field on Treasure Island.

Given that Mark Davis is of the opinion that P.F. Chang's represents a fine-dining experience, I would not be shocked to see him elect to have his NFL franchise play an entire season on a gigantic Pillsbury Toaster Strudel.

Not surprising since he probably sees his Prince Valiant hairstyle as cool.
