Finally, The Athletic has learned that NFL owners are concerned enough about the Chargers’ situation in L.A., where a crowded sports market and the presence of the more established Rams has resulted in a tepid embracement of the Chargers, that they would provide the necessary support for a relocation to London if the Chargers pursue it.

Let's say the Chargers move to London. What rivalries do you break up to have divisions that make a modicum of sense? Personally, I'm thinking this is the way it goes:

AFC East

New England

New York Jets

Buffalo

London

AFC South

Miami

Jacksonville

Indianapolis

Tennessee

AFC West

Houston

Kansas City

Las Vegas

Denver

AFC North

Pittsburgh

Baltimore

Cleveland

Cincinnati

This isn't nearly as gruesome as I thought.

It’s not the rivalries that I’m worried about.  It’s when Parliament and Congress revoke timezones and outlaw the curvature of the Earth.  Those are the biggest impediments to having a team in London.

The NFL would leave them in the AFC West because they're stupid.

I came of age in an era where the Arizona Cardinals were in the NFC East and the Carolina Panthers in the NFC West. It was hilarious and dumb.

I have to feel that if the Chargers had just lived with this, things would have gone a lot better for them:

Honestly....the jet lag thing's such an issue that they might as well keep the Chargers in the West.

I got a better idea.

Bring them back to San Diego.

Or...

Oakland, St Louis, Portland or San Antonio.

But for logistics sake, anywhere but London.

Too bad! Why be 3rd banana in California or 2nd banana in Missouri when you can have an entire country to yourself? / s

Mexico City?  Or is the city too dangerous?

@Red Comet, while I think that this is the most sensible way to structure the AFC should the Chargers head for London and be allowed by the NFL to stay in their present conference, the Miami Dolphins' long history of pandering to Northeasterners visiting South Florida and especially to South Florida residents who used to live in the Northeast has me wondering about how likely it would be that the Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills fight each other over which of those teams gets to stay in the AFC East.  If the Phins win -- and the Bills lose -- the privilege of playing in an AFC East with the New England Patriots, the New York Jets, and a London team that may or may not have the Chargers nickname, then the league's best choice for realigning the AFC would be:

  1. to put the Houston Texans in the Chargers' position in the AFC West, as you suggest;
  2. to make the Baltimore Ravens replace the Texans in the AFC South, and thus not only revive the Ravens' former rivalries with the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars, but also foment a twice-per-regular-season grudge match against the Baltimore-turned-Indianapolis Colts; and
  3. to have the Bills replace the Ravens in the AFC North, where at least the Bills would have rivalries with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns.

Finally, the fact that Miami International Airport has scheduled nonstop passenger flights to and from the London area's largest airport on three airlines and scheduled nonstop passenger service to and from the London area's second-largest airport on a fourth airline -- whereas the closest airport to Buffalo with scheduled nonstop passenger flights to and from any airport in or near London is slightly over 94 miles or 151 kilometers away by car, and across an international border, in the Toronto area -- might help give the Dolphins an edge over the Bills in landing a place in an AFC East with a London-based franchise.  While scheduled nonstop passenger flights to and from London may not matter so much to players, coaches, executives, and other team personnel who would enjoy the privilege of going across the Atlantic in a chartered aircraft, such flights or the lack thereof could be a big deal for local fans who are willing and able to attend an away game on the other side of "the pond" and local media personnel who are tasked with traveling those thousands of miles to cover such a game.

Just go back to San Diego

Simple solution, staring them in the face.

Unfortunately, the Spanos family is toxic in San Diego.  It’s far from certain that they would be welcomed back, which means it’s far from certain that the team would be welcomed back.

The Spanos family had better start thinking about whether they want to rebrand their franchise, or pay the existing London Chargers to do so.

In fact, the Spanos "braintrust" had better try to put the London Chargers Rugby League club out of business as quickly as possible. After all, the South London-based side made it all the way to the Southern Conference League Grand Final back in September... and gave Hammersmith Hills Hoists all they could handle, before succumbing 16-10.
