NFL Merry-Go-Round: Relocation Roundelay

Bring back NFL Europe and put four teams in the UK. Better yet, they should relocate the four worst NFL franchises and send them over there as punishment, making them permanent NFL Europe teams. Those fans won't care that they have to sit through a Chargers-Bengals or Jets-Jaguars game every week, they'll just be excited to watch NFL football! This also will reduce the number of NFL teams down to 28 ( with two divisions per conference) and will make the league more competitive and balanced overall. Plus, America will be finally be rid of inept owners like Dean Spanos. Everybody wins!

What the hell is he gonna to with the broom when he catches the snitch? Is Harry Potter just a glamorized hardcore prison story?

Hogwarts Institution for Magical Delinquents does have a bit of a ring do it.

Seriously, Mexico City seems like a better idea than London. Anything is a better idea than London. Might as well have Elon Musk buy the team and move it to Mars.

Yeah and they should all ride brooms while Harry Potter chases the Snitch!

Bigger joke of a franchise: Chargers or Chudley Cannons?

(The Cannons' motto would actually apply for the Chargers: "Let's all just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.")

I’m sure the Chargers, much like the Chudley Cannons, still poop on the floor and magic it away. Except the Chargers don’t have magic, so they poop on the floor (e.g., making a solitary Super Bowl, wasting historically great offenses and defenses with poor special teams play, and whatever the heck the LA move was about).

Also - Rowling, please stop retroactively making your work sillier, OK? I’m not even getting into Asian concubine Nagini.

This is where I'm at with it. I used to be so absolutely fervent in my fandom and I thought that was never going to change. Now, I look at the show they make of it, which I once absolutely loved, and now find it to be kind of embarrassing. It's just SO over the top and they take all if it so much more seriously than it has any right being. Add to that the many things about the NFL (Football, in general) that are problematic, and worse, the way they try to sweep so much of that under the rug, and I'm pretty much totally out on watching NFL football. I still enjoy a lot ofthe residuals of it (And being a sports fan in general it's pretty hard to avoid NFL talk when it dominates so much of the airwaves), no doubt. But I can't remember the last time I actually sat down and paid attention to a game without getting bored to tears or just plain annoyed at the excess of it all.

You and I are about the same age. I think it may just be a sign that we're finally growing up a  bit.

I think it's this mostly. In my high school and college years I'd watch Bengals games and know that if they didn't win I'd be miserable for at least 3 days, which considering it's the Cincinnati Bengals was idiotic. Winning was only a feeling of relief, losing was a fate worse than death. I'd get in fights with friends about them. I'd argue with strangers on message boards (not this one). It was really stupid and that's not healthy. I've seen this team go 8-0 and I've seen them go 0-8 (a few times) and my life hasn't changed in either case. Actually right now I'm in a much better place than I was 4 years ago when they were 8-0.

In the last 6 to 7 years some things have happened in my personal life where perspective was introduced and the importance of professional sports was more properly defined. That and having met pro athletes through work and growing up with a couple guys who went on to decent pro baseball careers, I see it more as just a job and the players as people now. I have no control over what happens and although that's a simple and obvious statement, there's been many times when I've let something I can't control dictate my mood. After the 2015 playoff debacle I vowed to never let that happen again. It took work and introspection about why I cared so deeply, but now I move on from losses in a matter of seconds. Truly. Now I watch the sports I care about, which is almost exclusively hockey and baseball with a little bit of soccer (me watching more soccer than football is a surprising development to me. High school me would be floored.) just because I like watching those sports and care less about the results.

As for the actual NFL product - I don't think any of the other sports leagues have as poor a version of their sport as the NFL does theirs and I don't find the games enjoyable, which is why I haven't really watched the last few years. That's without even thinking about all the injury problems. Maybe I'll come back once the Patriots machine is disassembled, but I doubt I'll ever care about this league as much as I did 12, 13, 14 years ago.

If I didn't know better, I would have thought that you wrote this about me. Life has a way of putting things into perspective. Sports, at the end of the day, are strictly entertainment and very inconsequential. As much as I still love them, I don't get too worked up about much in sports anymore.

This is a fascinating conversation. And I'm with you all on my diminished interest in the NFL. But in addition to its obvious faults (the lionization of villains, the willful ignorance toward brain damage), what really ruined it for me was soccer.  After watching 90-plus minutes of mostly constant play, the nonsensical stops-and-starts of an NFL game are just maddening. More and more, I find myself using the first commercial break of an NFL game as an exit to turn on Netflix or something more entertaining.

It's no longer the must-see-TV of my youth, and I'm perfectly fine with that. (Don't get me started on the NBA, where the first three quarters of any game are a colossal waste of time.)

This. Right here. This is it.

Soccer was something I really didn't understand before my current job, and it came across as so boring. But now I see that it's basically like baseball, but in reverse. In baseball, there isn't much that goes on, but it's all strategy trying to set things up when nothing is happening. It's boring as all hell if you don't understand that, but that's fantastic if you understand the purpose. No sport holds my attention better than baseball specifically for that reason. Soccer has a TON going on, but it seems like nothing is happening. But in the same sense, it's all setting up a certain strategy. Now that I better "Get" the whole purpose? There isn't much that I enjoy more than soccer.

I played soccer for 15 years all the way through high school so I always enjoyed watching it but back in the 90s (and to a lesser degree, the aughts), it was never televised. I remember only seeing random European club games in the 90s. It was actually in the late 90s that I became a Chelsea fan after randomly seeing them play in a PL game against Manchester United. The only fully covered soccer back 20 years ago were the World Cups and the Euro Cup. Now, that soccer coverage is more ubiquitous, it is natural that it has taken some of my interest away from football. I watch the PL, Bundesliga, the Champions League, along with MLS much more than I watch the NFL.

Getting back on topic, just as I hope a PL club is never based in the US, I hope there is never an NFL team in England or anywhere in Europe.
