You know what I think would be the smart thing for the Browns to do (they won't do this, but they should)?

Cut him. Both him AND Josh Gordon. Eat whatever cap hit they'll eat...but just rid themselves of the problem children NOW.

Sure it may be an unpopular move, especially in Manziel's case...but if this organization is really serious about trying to turn over a new leaf, they can start by kicking those two out the door and in turn send a message that all that extra mess will no longer be tolerated. At all.

But of course that won't happen because...it just won't happen. (At least not with Manziel, anyway. Gordon on the other hand...slightly more plausible, but still most likely won't happen.)

I agree with you. What do the Browns get by having Manziel on their team? Nothing but trouble, headaches, and terrible play so far. They certainly aren't getting a solid NFL starting quarterback. If Jerry Jones was able to resist taking him that tells you what the league thinks of this kid.

I've said this before - Manziel is Today's Brian Bosworth. Loads of hype, big mouth, good college career, can't play in the pros. The difference is Bosworth wasn't that bad at the NFL level. Injuries cut his career short. I don't think Manziel will even get that much of a shot. And it is great.

And to think the Browns could have stayed put in last year's draft and ended up with Sammy Watkins and Teddy Bridgewater.

Buying Packers stock was the smartest move I've ever made as a sports fan.

Well, to be completely fair, the kid has played in ONE game. I think it's a bit early and really reactionary (standard in ESPN style coverage of the NFL these days, though) to call him a bust at this point.

I'm not saying he isn't gonna be a bust, but jeez. Let's stop the chicken little act already.

I'm sick of the piling on Manziel. Like Bucfan said, he's only played in one game-hardly an indicator of what his career is going to be. If he matures, and works on his game, he has the potential to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. If he continues to play lousy next year, then grill him all you want. But until then, give him a chance.

Dan Snyder hired a GM that actually knows how to build a team.

I think The Hogs may have just sprouted wings.

Doesn't solve their owner problem, though. That can trump everything.

Consider Phil Jackson hasn't exactly done wonders for the Knicks.

FWIW, Jerry Jones should win "NFL Executive of the Year". One could use the broken clock comparison, but this season, he deserves the award.

That said, Scot McCloughan is really good at talent evaluation and was the one who built the 49ers via the draft. He also helped SEA with the draft.

Downside is that he really loves "the draught"...at the bar. He's got a drinking problem which forced both SF and SEA to let him go.

I agree. It's become fun to hate Manziel. He's brought some of it on himself, but I don't know that he's done anything too egregious.

If he wants to succeed he'll have to be patient and more focused. Be like Russell Wilson (who is also not an ideal size). He is not going to succeed on his talent alone. QBs cannot do that. I kinda hope he succeeds...it's not looking likely but he is a young guy who has not played much. (Glad the Vikes waited around and got Teddy, though!)

Perhaps Manziel can be a cautionary tale to other young QBs (like Winston)...Two (or even three) years of college football may not be enough for a QB.

Not that it really matters, but if Mariota declares for the draft and he ends up being drafted by Tampa Bay... What number would he get? Mike Glennon already has 8.

(Random thought of the day)

There's only two options.Take another number or pay Glennon an undisclosed amount of money for the number.

My point was simply that the Browns could have ended up with two pretty good prospects instead of rolling the dice on Manziel. There were just as many (if not more) "experts" saying Manziel was not an NFL caliber QB as there were saying he was. You act like people are giving up on a guy who was touted as the next Andrew Luck or something. All that aside, you really think the Browns would be worse off right now with Watkins and Bridgewater?

Also, you want to talk about the "ESPN effect?" Manziel was hyped to high heaven before the draft. And apparently, it worked on you.

there's two other options.

1. The team just gives him the number and tells the other guy to select from is left because he's nobody.

2. They just cut the guy.

Because I said tht you're being quick to judge after just ONE game you're seriously trying to interpret that as me being a person who thinks he's the second coming? I have no idea if he's going to be that great of a quarterback, but calling him Brian Bosworth after about 40 snaps is just ridiculous.

But ok, whatever you say, Skip Bayless

Bears will introduce new GM Ryan Pace today. Pace will consume a polish sausage, say "fire/passion" a lot, and inform the media of his intent to grow a mustache.

But can he build a winning Bears team?

I guess we'll find out. All talk of him has been raving, but I guess that's how it normally is in these situations. The alternative guy who the media thought they'd pick (and largely considered a good hire) was a Chiefs personnel guy who had spent a decade with the Bears before going to KC for two seasons. I'm glad they went with someone who didn't cut his teeth in this organization. The organization has been largely bad.

Rumor 'round the campfire is that Ballard's interview focused mostly on restructuring the organization - something which McCaskey probably wasn't a fan of. Pace is not only a complete departure from the former regimes, but is a young guy who was highly coveted by the Saints organization.

I don't care how old he is, where he came from (Flowery Mound, TX?), blah blah blah - just draft well, make the team watchable and competitive again.

But the thing is, Ballard wasn't interviewing to be team president. He should have talked about football operations. I wouldn't go to a job interview and tell the CEO how crappy of a job he's been doing. It's strange that pretty much everyone in Chicago sports media considers it a great hire, even the ones who are strictly contrarians. If there were any legs to the "Ballard wanted to shake things up, and that scared the Bears" thing, the Bernsteins of the world would be screaming it from the rooftops and calling this a failed hire.

McCaskey/Phillips won't even be speaking at this press conference, which is appropriate. They may be available later, but it's nice to know they'll be in the background where they belong.
