Las Vegas (Something) Knights NHL concept

Hey sparky, your last two "Las Vegas NHL" series have been incredible! I am very glad you did a black knights concept because i am creating a fictional hockey universe that uses the las vegas black knights as a team and I hadn't found any uniforms. As far as C&C, I prefer the chess piece logo on the home and roads - the shield logo seems perfect as a shoulder/secondary logo. If you are thinking about an alternate, may I suggest putting the shield logo on a black uniform?

Btw this is my first ever post on these forums! :boogie:

I hope this doesn't mean you were planning on stealing Sparky's work...

This stuff is great. The changed name is an excellent improvement, and the logos are getting better (the BK was a little rough, and I didn't like the old shield). As always, you've done some good stuff here.

I really want to like the sword and shield, but something about it's not doing it for me. I think part of it may be the gray of the shield, and part of it may be the line weights. I like the horse logo a lot, but I'm not sold on the chess identity fitting in the NHL. It feels like a minor league gimmicky thing (yeah, the Mighty Ducks were a thing, but the 90s were a scary time :P). I am glad you ditched the bk logo, it wasn't working with the horse.

Also, I have a question for Sparky and anyone that knows better than I do. I love your presentation, and using supporting/inspiration imagery for concepts. I'm planning on trying that for a series sometime soon. What's the forum's policy on presenting other photos and drawings in work that we didn't create? Are we supposed to cite the work?

Can't wait to see more!

Hi suplauren, sorry to take so long getting back to you.

In all honesty, I don't know the rights and wrongs of using images from the internet.

I think it depends on how you use them.

I often use images that I find, to support a theme, or I'll photoshop a picture to show some relevance to a logo.

For example, I used a p'shopped picture of a knight on a warhorse to help "set the table" for this concept.

Now, I didn't give credit to the place where I got the picture, but I wasn't claiming that it was my work, or used the image in any logo or uniform design that I did create.

(All my logos, templates, merchandise and mascot designs, etc. are entirely original)

I'm pretty sure it's O.K. to use uncredited stuff as long as you're not making any money from it, or you are just using it to help show or support an idea, and you are not claiming to have created it.

I liken the process to a student using images, quotes, etc., to create a school project.

I'm pretty sure agencies would "mock-up" web images to help pitch an idea.

Again, i'm not entirely sure, so if someone does know, I'd also like to hear from them.

First off sparky, awesome set as always.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for the idea of the name Knights for a sports team. So the prospect of Las Vegas' NHL team being named the Black Knights is the silver lining I can find should this terrible idea come to pass.

The uniforms are great, but I prefer the logo swapped version. I've never been a fan of horse primaries when it comes to teams named the Knights. They work as secondary marks, but the primary should always be the knight itself. Nothing against your horse/chess piece logo, because it's excellent. It just wouldn't be my preference for primary.

I think both logos are fantastic, but both give me a different, if similar feel. The knight is more complex, and you kind of need to really look at it to appreciate it fully. "Hey, that's a chess piece. Oh, hey, it's kind of also like an ace! And that's a cool heraldic shield in the background. And the shield is kind of shaped like the Vegas sign, kinda." You immediately get a really cool instant impression from it, but there's more to unlock as you look at it. The Vegas star is just more instantly iconic and easy to process and has a lighter feel to it. But it still gives the full knightly feel. Seeing it as a sword and as a star is just easier to see at a glance. Realizing it's the VEGAS star done as a sword will only come later, and be a wow moment.

Trying to think of some other team that has two similar, but very different logos that they use on a semi-interchangable basis, if any. Most of those teams ditch one of the logos after awhile. Columbus Blue Jackets come to mind. Oh, for a precedent for informally shortening a team name, I often just hear the team referred to as the Jackets. The Devil Rays did that for a while, too, before officially shortening it to just Rays. You know the Black Knights will probably be just called the "Knights" in most normal conversation and on sports highlights shows.

Thanks darkp...you've got a knack for putting things into perspective.

Eventually, I'll choose a Primary, but for now, why not proceed with 2 logos?

I'm sure that if this was a real, "actually-being-used identity", the market would soon let you know which logo was preferred.

I'm also sure that the "Vegas Star" will work better than the "Black Knight Chess-Piece" for certain applications, and vce-versa.

I'll explore the use of both of them.

I also tried you're idea of using the Vegas sign shape behind both logos.

It looked good but the shield shape seemed stronger.

I'll be using your idea on some merchandise stuff though.

The updated chess piece looks so good, I think it should be the primary :P.

Thanks Ice_Cap...good to hear from you.

I was trying to remember where I had seen a horse being used as a knight's symbol, when I saw this...

PRINCE_VALIANT_COMP_COLL_DVD_SET.jpg

It's the old Prince Valiant comic series. (Can you believe that Robert Wagner played P.V. in the movie?)

I'm starting to lean towards the "Star" logo myself.

I'll give them both a try and see where that takes me. Stay tuned.

The Logos

I've got 2. I'm not sure as to which should be the primary so for now I'm going to use both.

The "Vegas Star" logo is based on the famous L.V. Welcome sign...

suplauren quite rightly mentioned that there was some variance in line weights, so I resolved that problem by going with the black shield behind the "rays"...

bk-038.jpg

The second logo is designed as a "black knight" chess piece.

There's a couple of versions ...

I referred to the colour and patterns of a medieval "tournament".

Here's a photo from "The Medieval Times"...

bk-019.jpg

The main unis are a little darker in nature to suit the preferred colours of the "Black Knights" theme,

but we could liven things up a bit in the Alt and Fan sweaters/unis...

I'm not so sure that it's such a "terrible idea"...

- a city of 2 million, with a relatively decent "average house-hold income"

- 40 million visitors a year staying an average of 2.8 nights...

- the NHL will be the only pro-game in town...

- a passionate, billionaire owner in Bill Foley...

- a beautiful, state-of-the-art-arena...

Plaza-Night3-1.jpg

- and a populace that seems to have a desire for community identities other than "the Strip"

Imagine the corporate support potential and cross-promotion possibilities.

The actual arena being built for the yet to be named "Black Knights" Las Vegas NHL expansion team is literally right across the street from the Excalibur hotel/casino. The Excalibur has a dinner show called the Tournament of Kings with knights competing in medieval events.

Love the designs, but I'm still not sold on a chess piece logo for a NHL team. Shields are great and I'd like to see your attempt at an armored knight also.
