Arena / Stadium Logos from the 70's

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

I love logos from the 70's and I thought a great way to see sports-related 70's logos I have never seen would be to create a thread dedicated to arena and stadium logos that were created in the 70's.

I have some examples below and everyone is more than welcome to submit their favorites.

1) The Hartford Civic Center actually had TWO logos in the 70's: one that looked eerily similar to the Caldor's department store rainbow, and one that was a ligature of an H and two C's.

2) Here is what the Nassau Coliseum logo looked like in the 70's (I like how it looks like a bird's eye view of a circular stadium with a track and playing surface in the center):

The Louisiana Superdome used to use this logo with a pelican:

Wow, I've never seen that before! Thanks for digging this up. However the style looks more 80's to me though (kinda has a Boston Breakers and Patrick Nagel vibe to it) and the colors are DEFINITELY not from the 70's. Purple and teal became popular for over a decade starting in 1988 when the Charlotte Hornets unveiled their unis and then almost every big four expansion team that came out in the 90's had teal as one of their colors. So I'm gonna guess this logo is from the late 80's or early 90's, or the drawing is from the early 80's and then the colors were updated in the late 80's or early 90's.

To further this idea I found out that this isn't the original logo for the Louisiana Superdome so that increases the evidence that it is not from the 70's. I looked around on eBay to see if I could find something with this pelican logo in 70's or early 80's colors and what I found was a completely different logo that is insanely 70's looking. Take a look:

This last pic was a surprise... I had no idea they played MLB games in the Astrodome! How often did that happen?

Here's the old Meadowlands logo. Not 70's but close enough:

I think that is just a drawing of the outside of Brendan Byrne Arena that they used on tickets, I'm pretty sure it's not a logo. To further this idea below is a ticket from 1985 of Giants Stadium, I'm pretty sure that wasn't used as a logo either. Below that is what I believe was the true logo for Brendan Byrne Arena in the 70's because after some research it seems like the M with the outline of New Jersey inside was used as the logo for all sports complexes at The Meadowlands.

The horse racing track at The Meadowlands used a variation of this logo too:

Giants Stadium had a red circular logo at the 50 yard line for years and years. Below are the best photos I could find of it. I am not sure if it came out in the 70's or not because it is so simple it is hard to date it:

Astrodome? Or did you mean Superdome?

Looks like that program is actually for a game in City Park, not the Dome. It's possible that the LSED managed City Park Stadium back then. But, even still, they used to have exhibition MLB games in the preseason pretty regularly. I remember catching the Cubs and Yankees one year back in the late 90s/early 2000s.

There used to be a red stylized "A" inside a white circle at midfield at Arrowhead Stadium. I think the "A" is the same as the one in the word "Arrowhead" on the back side of the jumbotrons that face the parking lot.

The 1977 New Orleans Pelicans were a one-year wonder as a Cardinals affiliate after Tulsa's stadium fell down on itself. That club was in the Superdome, then moved to Springfield, IL for four years before settling in for a nice run in Louisville...
