Intra-squad friendlies are quite common for Premier League teams, especially during FA cup weekends and international breaks. They are not fully competitive and often contain mixed teams depending on who needs minutes for fitness/sharpness etc. They are even played against other teams at times. This result could have happened at any club in the country but is only being artificially made into a big deal after Villa's poor season and bad result against Liverpool. He's basically saying that even if teams like Leicester City earn a spot, they should still just give it to teams like Man U instead because they're more "popular". That's an AWFUL way to seed a tournament as big as the Champions League. That's akin to giving the Yankees a playoff spot every year regardless of their record because they sell more hats than anyone else. Jaffa Posted March 5, 2016 Share Posted March 5, 2016 I remember reading that when the Premier League was founded - as a breakaway competition for the financial benefit of England's biggest clubs, let's not forget - the top teams tried to have a rule put in place that they could not be relegated from the new League. Their place at the top table and the wealth that comes with it would be protected in perpetuity. The big clubs wanting their financial position protecting is nothing new, not by a long shot. Look too at Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu's recent comments that the elite clubs should be granted automatic 'wildcard' entry into the Champions League, even if they suffer a poor season and finish short of the qualification places. My only surprise about Stillitano's comments is the shock they've created. He's just the poster boy for the opinion that the top clubs have long held of themselves - that they are privileged, entitled and should be given more favourable treatment than everyone else simply because of who they are.
