This really shouldn't be as newsworthy as it is being made out to be.

Intra-squad friendlies are quite common for Premier League teams, especially during FA cup weekends and international breaks. They are not fully competitive and often contain mixed teams depending on who needs minutes for fitness/sharpness etc. They are even played against other teams at times.

This result could have happened at any club in the country but is only being artificially made into a big deal after Villa's poor season and bad result against Liverpool.

I know I'm a day late with this, but a 5' penalty via James Milner has sent Liverpool into the Europa League round of 16. The draw is actually happening now.

People are screaming this is rigged against the English teams. I disagree. In fact it guarantees at least one makes it to the last 8. Outside of the Spanish and German clubs who else risked playing a team from the same country?

Full lineup:

Shakhtar Donetsk v Anderlecht

Basel v Sevilla

Villarreal v Bayer Leverkusen

Athletic Bilbao v Valencia

Liverpool v Manchester United

Sparta Prague v Lazio

Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham

Fenerbahce v Braga

Sry for double post, but I have to point this out.

Any Simon Mignolet apologist will meet criticism of him with: "Yeah, well, he's a good shot-stopper." Yeah, about that...

Finding competition for him needs to be priority #1 in the summer for us imo.

How the hell do we lose to Swansea?

Props to Liverpool though, they killed Man City.

I love playing spoiler. Lots of people saying that Man City's title hoped are effectively done. Roberto Firmino also scored his 6th Premier League goal in his last 7 games. Not bad.

Also: City haven't won at Anfield since 2003.

UEFA Champions League to be killed off by Dolphins owner Stephen Ross?

Quote

Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, City’s chief executive Ferran Soriano and Liverpool’s Ian Ayre ALL emerged smiling and shaking hands after the clandestine meeting.

Ross’ plans are the biggest threat to the English game since the Premier League breakaway in 1992 — and would spell the end of Uefa’s Champions League.

Ross, the owner of the Miami Dolphins and brains behind the International Champions Cup, invited the big five to the lengthy and detailed talks at the hotel on Park Lane.

The current TV deal expires in 2018.

Stillitano believes Europe’s biggest clubs deserve to make more cash from the Champions League, given their contribution to making it such a financial success. He said fans are more likely to watch the Juventus v Bayern Munich and Arsenal v Barcelona games in the current round of 16 rather than matches involving PSV Eindhoven and Ghent.

“This is going to sound arrogant and it’s the furthest thing from it … but suddenly when you see the teams we have this summer in the ICC you are going to shake your head and say, ‘Isn’t that the Champions League?’” Stillitano said. “No, the Champions League is PSV and Ghent.”

Voicing the complaints he hears from clubs, Stillitano said: “I could make a lot more money, I can be a lot more visible, I can help my sponsors out but right now I am locked into doing certain things that are really historic.”

I went to an ICC game last summer. It sucked. The "competition" is a relative novelty now but the level of play is so low that, unless improved, it can't last.

Well, he's right about one thing. It does sound pretty damn arrogant.

He's basically saying that even if teams like Leicester City earn a spot, they should still just give it to teams like Man U instead because they're more "popular". That's an AWFUL way to seed a tournament as big as the Champions League. That's akin to giving the Yankees a playoff spot every year regardless of their record because they sell more hats than anyone else.

I remember reading that when the Premier League was founded - as a breakaway competition for the financial benefit of England's biggest clubs, let's not forget - the top teams tried to have a rule put in place that they could not be relegated from the new League. Their place at the top table and the wealth that comes with it would be protected in perpetuity. The big clubs wanting their financial position protecting is nothing new, not by a long shot. Look too at Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu's recent comments that the elite clubs should be granted automatic 'wildcard' entry into the Champions League, even if they suffer a poor season and finish short of the qualification places.

My only surprise about Stillitano's comments is the shock they've created. He's just the poster boy for the opinion that the top clubs have long held of themselves - that they are privileged, entitled and should be given more favourable treatment than everyone else simply because of who they are. Or, in some cases, what they once were.
