NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

Fox Sports Arizona has a good chunk of details, as well. Here, literally, is the money quote:

Sherwood has been preparing a report that examines the financial implications for the city with and without the Coyotes that he will present to council members on Tuesday. Based on his task force’s findings, the Coyotes remaining in Arizona would mean about $1.5 million more annually for the city.

Spending $6 million a year to bring in $1.5 million in revenue? You just got Glendaled, son!

Sounds like it's the $10 million the city was saying they'd be willing to pony up. So much for Glendale not being the NHL's cash register.

Shannon is an idiot and has reported nothing but falsehoods on this story.

This Sherwood guy seems like a real idiot in the vein of Joyce Clark. My guess is that the rest of council thinks his plan, whatever sort of b.s. "creative financing" it is, sucks.

Not so fast, my friends:

Even though I posted this in the E3 thread, concerning KI3, this is so applicable here:

So what do we re-name this thread for its fourth iteration? It's a great CCSLC tradition right up there with "The Bucs have different numbers in training camp, are jersey changes coming?"; Someone posting the "Infinity Mirror" Browns logo concept; and "Did the Red Wings move away from arched lettering?"; and so on and so forth.

I'm really not too worried about this. They just approved their budget that said no more money for hockey, they just picked two finalists for arena management (which Bettman threatened them not to do), and now out of nowhere on a Friday night comes some crap about money having magically appeared. Most of the people on the council, especially the new faces, seem to be done letting themselves get pushed around by big-city people who are smarter, richer, and cleverer than they are, but somehow they elected this new Sherwood guy who to my knowledge has never said anything but "okay, guys, let's give the nice men their money and no one gets hurt."

And here I thought Arizona was a fiscally conservative state...

Well, corporate socialism is not bad, apparently...

So I realize that many city-owned arenas hire 3rd parties to manage the operations. And I realize that costs money (I have no idea how much.) I also understand that many teams have their own arena management divisions and can handle the operations for events other than just their own (I worked for one.)

What I don't understand, is how a team doesn't need to pay to lease the arena for their games, and at the same time collects a fee to manage it. Does the city get anything out of this deal? I don't care about the arguments that a pro team brings business and tax dollars in, because that's debatable, and the Coyotes aren't exactly a top draw.

I've been following this thread since the beginning, but kind of lost track, with all the "deadlines" that have passed, all the elections and votes, and everything else that gets posted every day but in reality means absolutely nothing. Please tell me that I'm missing a big part of this picture, and that Glendale isn't really doing this.

Also, are they still paying millions to cover losses?

Well, then you answered your question. Nominally, a team is supposed to pay rent, but when they're also being paid to manage the arena, then what's the point of charging someone a dollar to buy five dollars? You're coming out behind.

My question is how does hockey "Save Westgate" if there have been these offseasons in which the NHL never booked anything? What does it do then? Do people just not go outside between Memorial Day and Labor Day because it's too hot? I don't know. Arizona is stupid and no one should live there.

No one should live in the Southwest, period. It's been a failed hodgepodge of overdevelopment, speculation and water overuse. Phoenix, Vegas, San Diego, hell even here in LA...all these cities shouldn't exist because of the droughts, heat waves and other environmental calamities waiting to be ensued in this death trap of a region.

And this doesn't even address the moronic politicking between the Coyotes, Bettman and Glendale.

I wouldn't go as far as shutting down the entirety of southern California. That's downright daffy. Phoenix is going to be an even bigger uh-oh, though. So very many bad ideas.
