I wanted the Coyotes out of Arizona but not in the half-assed fashion in which it seems to be proceeding. Key Arena will possibly become home to an NHL franchise in just about 2 months with the preseason and the rumors are that it WILL be ready? Bettman and his cronies are turning this league into a bigger joke than it already has been for a few years.

Yeah, and Seattle's mayor is a bumble:censored:, too, seeing as he basically confirmed that they are getting the Coyotes while the NHL is hush hush and still claiming they are committed to Glendale. What a joke, the whole damn situation.

This is amazing. They'll have no time to sell season ticket packages, hire an event staff, move the existing employees or hire new ones, etc. It's not like the Winnipeg situation where they were essentially trading a minor team for a major one and had most of the pieces in place to at least get by.

I guess Quebec might have the same problem, but at least it seems like they've been preparing for longer and probably have a plan ready to hit the ground with on day 1.

This is the Cleveland Barons all over again, only with a worse arena situation.

And we don't even have the excuse of killing a WHA team.

The WHA did a good enough job killing itself, I have been doing a lot or research on that league and let me tell you it makes the NHL look like the most well run league in sports.

So what? Honestly I'm to the point where I'm rather enjoying the NHL using one of their franchises to make an ass of themselves. Now they'll continue doing just that and we get to watch them do it in a different surroundings. It'll make for some continued reasons to say OITGDNHL while watching a whole new set of stupid decisions be made.

Not that the league cares about this, but this is all terribly unfair to the fans in all three cities involved: Phoenix (such as it is), Seattle and Quebec.

As for Quebec, could Quebecor at least pursue a service agreement with the Remparts to handle some of the sales and event planning functions in the interim?

I'm hoping that the league isn't bluffing Glendale--the Coyotes need to leave if nothing happens. But the league will have successfully ran out the clock if ice can't be put in Seattle.

Quebec needs to be considered if Krypreos is right, but it simply makes too much sense for the NHL.

bumble:censored I will agree with, but he never confirmed the Coyotes are definitely coming to Seattle.

My gut tells me that he didn't say anything about it publicly until the NHL wanted him to, and the NHL wanted him to in order to put the screws on Glendale City Council. I don't think many people see this as anything other than using one city to leverage a situation in another.

The irony in this situation is that while I don't think the NBA was truly using Seattle to get a better deal in Sacramento, that was the ultimate outcome. I believe the NHL is using Seattle only to get a better deal in Glendale, but the Coyotes are more likely to move here than the Sacramento Kings were.

But yes, McGinn is a complete bumble:censored:

I understand why the NHL isn't moving the Coyotes to Quebec City. They're trying to play the long game. Quebec is building a $400 million arena with no promise of a team. They *need* an NHL team, so there's no reason to sell them the Coyotes for $220 million now when you can charge them a $400-600 million expansion fee in a couple of years.

The problem is that, for expansion to be feasible and for Seattle to succeed, multiple things have to break their way that the league has no control over. The path they've chosen seems very high-risk.

What is with these arbitrary made up numbers? You do realize that there are only 3 teams in the NHL that worth more that $400 million. A more rational number would be in the $200 million range for an expansion fee.

You don't have to be rational. The Coyotes sure as crap aren't worth $170M or $220M - the recent sales of other, more viable teams prove that. So you charge what the market will bear, regardless of its relevance to the market value of other teams. Quebec's pinned itself in a corner with its new rink and Markham wants to be GTA2 more than anything. You charge whatever both can afford.

I was thinking about something.....could the NHL be using Seattle as a stop-over before moving the team to Quebec City?

The NHL is pretty dead-set on realigning the league for next season, apparently. There's nothing definite about Seattle building a new arena (while QC is getting their arena built right now), and the NHL has said they'll re-visit the league's soon-to-be-adopted realignment plan after three seasons. By then, Quebec's arena will be completed (and possibly given a trial run by a minor league team), we'll have a good idea on Seattle being a worthy NHL market, and other teams with money issues (namely the Devils) would have three years to see which financial direction they're going in.....all the while the league's salary cap restraints (if I remember correctly) are set for the next couple seasons. (Did the league and NHLPA agree to a fixed cap limit for the next few years, in the $64-million neighborhood?)
