Blackberry to report nearly a $1 Billion loss this quarter.

So who would have ultimately taken the Hamilton Coyotes off of Balsillie's hands?

The ECHL makes some sense in that these mid-sized arenas need anchor tenants and hey why not minor-league hockey. I can't explain the SPHL. No one can.

I don't think the Panthers are moving, though from what I've gleaned, this seems to break up the all-important cross-ownership between the hockey team and Sunrise Sports & Entertainment.

The SPHL survives because it pays the players so low. The Mississippi Riverkings (Memphis suburbs) moved from the CHL to SPHL two years ago to lower player costs. They average 2500 a game and somehow manage to survive.

It is. $7/game, and the package includes free parking and a free replica jersey.

Sunrise Sports & Entertainment doesn't have to make money on the Panthers, since their lease deal with Broward County is such a cash cow. But they do need to keep the Panthers to keep that lease deal (with 15 years left on it), so this is the end result. As an added bonus, SS&E can bleed red ink all over the hockey team, artificially keeping down Hockey-Related Revenue and, as a result, slowing the growth of player salaries.

The Panthers are awful, and the rest of the league wouldn't have it any other way.

Is $7 a game for hockey tickets unusually cheap? I paid about the same for Diamondbacks season tickets.

I think Coyotes season tickets are pretty similar too. They'll also throw in a 5 bedroom house in Glendale and commercial space at Westgate as well!

LOL yeah - that's the price of a beer at most places, not a ticket. Cheapest Flyers per-ticket price for a season ticket is $39, and you wouldn't want to be in those seats. Non-season ticket would be more. I'm sure that Toronto, NY, DET, are more, and most of the other "traditional" market teams are around the same.

I haven't seen a baseball season ticket for under $20 / game since the Phillies left the Vet after 2003. Stuff is just different in the south and west when it comes to pro sports.

Yeah, what you're describing are ridiculously low prices.

Even my Cosmos season tickets were $26 per game. Which means that, even with the much shorter season, the total package was still more expensive than the Panthers' $300 season. I'm sitting in pretty good seats, but still. Minor league soccer.
