The Coyotes are pissed. Seeing them play five seasons in front of no one while this navigates untold levels of legal hell would be the most just scenario for all parties involved.

If the commissioner's precious pet team ends up getting shagged rotten right in the middle of the Stanley Cup Final, we might approach peak OITGDNHL.

“This is a blatant attempt to renege on a valid contract that was negotiated fairly and in good faith and in compliance with all laws and procedures. In the event the City Council initiates any action to revoke, repeal or otherwise rescind the agreement, the Coyotes will immediately take all actions available to them under the law against the City of Glendale.”

I'd say I haven't laughed this hard since the last time I saw Bruce Rauner use the phrase "good faith" but that's not really meaningful since I think that was earlier today. Still, while the Coyotes negotiations may have met the legal definition of good faith, it certainly never would have met any practical definition.

I heard about this in the local news.. I personally think that Portland is the best option because they have a hockey ready arena (The Moda Center, which this team might have to share with the Winterhawks... but only part of the time since they split their home games between there and the Memorial Coliseum)

The Glendale City Clown Car is holding a special meeting tomorrow to discuss cancelling its arena lease and management agreement with Coyotes ownership. I'd say it's 50/50 that they somehow end up giving IceArizona more money out of this.

LOL, that would be just vintage Glendale.

Though here's hoping they finally grow some balls and either get a good deal or tell the Coyotes to GTFO. Either way I'd say it's better than 50/50 the team leaves. The team is not going to sit by and take a worse deal than they have particularly with their own losses reportedly mounting too.

That won't happen because of the unbalanced conferences (besides, the Panthers are sitting and waiting for that arena to be done so they can move there in time for the 2016-17 season). Look for them to maybe (and that's a very big maybe with this vote coming up) play another year there then relocate to Las Vegas. If Vegas has a temporary place for them to play until this new one is done, then it might be another Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg situation. Actually the legal analyst on TSN made a very good observation. About 3 weeks before the Thrashers announced they were moving to Winnipeg, Bettman was commenting on reports about a possible Thrashers relocation and was adament that it was not happening. 3 weeks later, the Thrashers headed north. So if this vote goes against the Coyotes, expect to see many comments from Bettman saying there will be hockey in the desert next season following by an announcement of a relocation which will all be done in time for the draft.

Columbus or Detroit (or better yet, both!) are going to have to come to grips with certain inconveniences about the league's overall geography. It won't be too bad for Detroit's fans-the post-Detroit diaspora means much of the fanbase lives in the Western Conference footprint now.

Looks like the NHL expects Glendale to just bend over and ask for another...

Hopefully Glendale surprises them. Yotes fans are of course in full on blame Glendale mode. Nevermind this lease deal has been a disaster for Glendale.

I wonder if the last round of municipal bond offerings went catastrophically or something.

I think it would be a miracle if they surprise them, I think the council will ask for a redo. Things will heat up if the Yotes say no.

The NHL isn't letting Phoenix get away from them now with 2016's #1 overall pick coming out of Phoenix youth hockey. I expect this year's deux ex machina to be the announcement of a new Suns/Coyotes/ASU arena out near Tempe or Scottsdale.

If Glendale does vote to end the contract, this still won't be a Thrashers to Winnipeg situation. The Coyotes and the NHL will hold this up in legal hell for as long as they can, and really, as they should. Glendale agreed to the contract. They agreed to the losses and to the payments and to all of it. It's just now that they're living it, they're seeing how bad of a deal it actually was. They have buyer's remorse, but too bad.

Supposedly there's some fine print in Arizona where a city contract can be negated in the first three years, but that looks a little gray.

So no, I don't think the Coyotes are just going to be unceremoniously kicked out on their asses needing a place to play and go to Portland/Vegas/Quebec. I suspect they'll be in Glendale a little while longer while this gets settled. Ultimately, they'll probably leave Arizona, but not on this.

I was talking this morning to a friend about how if they REALLY wanted to keep the Yotes, they would team up with ASU and either renovate or completely rebuild Wells Fargo Arena on campus. It's damn near the perfect spot, right on the light rail line, is a good alternative to downtown, and ASU would have the motivation and justification to use their subsidies because it'll help their basketball team AND their new D1 hockey team.

But, no. Instead they'll just waste away in BFE using tax money that the county doesn't have until they're forced to move. Good riddance.

I don't know if you had heard that or it was a joke, but it might be prophetic. The Suns are looking into a new arena, but it's still in downtown Phoenix. I'm not sure how that would work for ASU. You'd have to figure the Coyotes would latch onto that at first sight, unless the new owners were given the team with the directions from Bettman that they could move to a more lucrative city (QC) in three years. Of course, this depends on how the Suns feel. They might not want anything to do with the Coyotes, although both teams have different ownership than when they were co-tenants.

More likely will be this used as a motivation for a new NBA/NHL arena downtown.
