if QC does get a team are they going to be treated as a new franchise or are they going to try to take the history/logo/uniforms from the Quebec portion of the Avalanche?

I hope QC gets the rights to everything that was from the old Nordiques franchise.

If the Jets 2.0 are any indication? They'll get the name and logos but not the history.

So, if the Yotes indeed move to Vegas like the Post rumor indicated what will King Gary do with only Quebec on the expansion docket?

There will be a new expansion process announced, with a $5 million non-refundable application fee, and a $600 million expansion fee. Come on down, Seattle!

Apparently only Vegas and QC submitted bids. Nothing from Hamilton, Toronto, Seattle, Portland, or anyplace else.

Looks like it's getting harder for Bettman to find a way not to give Quebec City a team.

Seems like. I mean at this point his only out is to cancel expansion completely. Which I suppose is still possible. The Coyotes still have no deal in Glendale. If he relocates them to Vegas he can call of expansion without too much fuss.

Gary Bettman must have hired Vince McMahon as a consultant. They seem to have similar contempt for their core audiences and chase mainstream acceptance (that will never come) instead of focusing on making the existing product as good as it can be.

I don't know why the NHL spends so much time fighting its natural audience. They're turning down existing money in favor of imaginary money in places that don't want them as much as they want to be wanted. It's embarrassing to watch.

No expansion. Instead, Florida/Carolina move to Quebec for a sale price + relocation fee that adds up to an expansion fee.

Where should the NHL expand to? NHL Universe! Vote now using the NHL app! The choices are: Las Vegas, Seattle, Not Quebec, and insert desert city here!

And just like WWE fan votes the results are already rigged to the city they want to win.

It's Las Vegas

"Our purpose, in initiating the expansion process in the manner we did, was not only to explore the possibility of admitting new members to the NHL but also, at the outset, to set realistic guideposts to distinguish between bona fide expressions of interest (i.e., those which have at least substantial ownership capabilities and an arena or the realistic possibility of an arena) from those indications of potential interest which were, at best, merely hopes or aspirations. Apparently, only Mr. Foley and Quebecor have the confidence in their ability to secure an arena and suitable ownership capability to move forward with this process.

Thread for when Gary Bettman gets a little salty.

Other leagues hire public relations agencies to write press releases like these. The NHL just has Gary Bettman write whatever comes to mind immediately after ragequitting expansion.

In a perfect world, Florida moves to Quebec and in a triumphant return to the NHL, a group buys the Hurricanes and moves them back to Hartford.

I hope it happens. I really do. Just to see the NHL sheepishly backtrack on the whole "expansion" thing with two seemingly viable applications on the table. It'll really expose the whole "anyone but Quebec" mindset.

Cactus Jack would be part owner of the latter.

Even working from a mindset that anything the NHL does is wrong, dropping expansion now would make sense. If three cities applied, it would be good - two expansion teams and a new home for the Coyotes. But everybody knows that the Coyotes are on borrowed time in Glendale, and the NHL needs to keep a market for them (likely Vegas). I don't think they want to expand to 31 teams, so we'll just end up with the coming disaster in Las Vegas and wait for the Panthers to eventually fold up tents and move to QC.
