At this rate Mobile, Alabama will end up with an NHL team before Quebec City does. Houston is most likely next through more expansion or relocation. It would be so Jeremy Jacobish to convince Bettman and the other cartel members to relocate the Senators to Houston. I've come to the conclusion that the Arizona Coyotes will never move.

NHL announces that Slava Voynov has been officially suspended for the 2019-20 season, and his eligibility will be restored no earlier than July 1, 2020. Voynov had been suspended indefinitely since Oct. 20, 2014. Despite previously terminating his contract, the Kings still retain his rights.

On Oct. 19, 2014, Voynov punched, kicked and choked his wife and smashed her head into a TV screen. On July 2, 2015, Voynov pleaded no contest misdemeanor, served 90 days in jail, payed a fine, and was "voluntarily deported" to Russia to serve his three-year probation. Upon the end of three-year term, his charges were dismissed in 2018 and had a hearing with the NHL on March 21.

Voynov served his probation by signing a 3-year/$4.5M per deal with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. The 30-year-old defenseman showed remorse for his actions by scoring 20 goals and 47 points in 110 games and winning the 2017 Gagarin Cup and 2018 Olympic gold medal. It doesn't seem like he played in the KHL this season.

Which team will be dumb enough to sign him?

So at least a six-year suspension? For a misdemeanor charge? 90 days in jail? It's a joke, and that's not an endorsement of what he did. He should be suspended from the NHL for 90 days and in jail for six years. Looking to sports leagues for justice lets prosecutors off the hook.

Almost no support for the Nordiques among fans anymore, who either like to be know-it-alls about GDPs and metro populations, or are so in love with the woke/extremely-online Sun Belt teams that they can't see straight.

It’s like all of these people have forgotten how much better the NHL is off having the Winnipeg Jets instead of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Deadspin on the NHL and Quebec City: https://deadspin.com/whos-keeping-the-nhl-out-of-quebec-city-1833781497

Nothing new to us in the article -- in fact, the author omitted the role we suspect Jeremy Jacobs to have in keeping the league out -- but what's really interesting is the comment section and how thoroughly public opinion has turned against Quebec. Almost no support for the Nordiques among fans anymore, who either like to be know-it-alls about GDPs and metro populations, or are so in love with the woke/extremely-online Sun Belt teams that they can't see straight.

You're going to need to show your work there. That's not how I read the comment section at all. There's a couple of those comments, yes, but also plenty of support for Canadian NHL franchises in general.

I completely disagree. The NHL gets to sell the markets, regardless of viewership in them, as part of their TV deal. Atlanta (a larger market) wouldn't have moved if it hadn't had more complicated factors, and the league wasn't already neck-deep in keeping Phoenix (smaller than ATL) afloat.

With it being a larger market than PHX, I think Houston is the only way the Coyotes actually move, for the foreseeable future.

Didn't he fail a background check to buy the Atlanta Hawks? Sounds like our kind of guy.

His Hawks bid in 2011 was his third attempt to buy a sports franchise.

He is an owner of a few casinos too, but the Culinary Union had issues with him last year over his purchase of the SLS Casino in Las Vegas.

Quote

Since then, we have found more information that raises further questions about Mr. Meruelo’s financial suitability and integrity to own and operate the SLS Las Vegas:

1.Last March, Commercial Bank of California, where Alex Meruelo is a founder and a member of the board of directors, extended a $13 million loan to a Miami company facing foreclosure due to an unpaid $34 million loan. The Miami company was (and still is) controlled by Richard Meruelo, who is Alex’s brother and has a history of business failures.

2.During the course of a tax court case against Alex Meruelo and his wife, it was revealed that they were using an offshore tax shelter that was related to a criminal investigation.

3.A group of EB-5 investors in the SLS Las Vegas filed a lawsuit alleging fraud against the SLS and other parties and seeking, among other things, an injunction of the sale of the SLS to Alex Meruelo.

Figured I’d drop this here, see if it starts any discussion:

The 99-00 contracts adjusted for inflation:

Jagr: $15.466 mil

O'Neal: $25.43 mil

Belle: $17.697 mil

Aikman: $15.987 mil

He's too perfect for the NHL.

Alex Meruelo's purchase of the majority stake in the Arizona Coyotes is official. First Latino NHL owner, his parents were Cuban immigrants.

Meruelo owns a construction and real estate firm as well as five LA radio stations, one LA TV station, prepackaged sushi company Fuji Food, the Grand Sierra in Reno and the SLS (soon to be Sahara) in Las Vegas. He has a $7-million+ home in Key West, a nearly $11-million penthouse in New York City and also bought an island off of Spain. And then of course all the other things documented in this thread of his failed Hawks bid, the lawsuit with the SLS casino.

Welcome to the OITGDNHL family, I guess.

I'm pretty sure I know this person. I worked for GSR right after their holdings acquired it from Hilton and did work for them until some time around 2012.

Bury the Coyotes under the bowling alley in Reno.

Well, when it comes to guys who own homes in New York, South Florida, and a private island, the NHL could do significantly worse.

I guess when you have the ridiculous amounts of money to spend on two lavish homes and a small Island, you are looking for the quickest way to piss away some of it. A good way to do that is to buy a failing NHL franchise.
