Well, when it comes to guys who own homes in New York, South Florida, and a private island, the NHL could do significantly worse.

So Calgary city council approved the proposed new arena deal yesterday. On the surface, it looks decent as far as arena deals go -- 50% of the money from the City, 50% from the Flames, total of $550 million -- but the optics are TERRIBLE. Yes, this has been an ongoing process for a while now, but the first that was heard of the new deal was only a week ago, and it has already been rammed through council. And then, in that week, council also had to find $60 million in services to cut from the municipal budget. I mean, sometimes the timing isn't perfect and you have to take a good deal when you can get it, but yeeeeeeesh.

Anyway, construction expected to begin in 2021.

"A good deal" would have been to tell the jagoff who left the country as a tax dodge to build his own damn rink with his own damn money, instead of handing him a minimum of $275 million of actual taxpayers' money. It's not like he was actually going to move the team. He couldn't even bother to put up the front of attending a Texans game with Miikka Kiprusoff or something.

Very Good and Extremely Solvent NHL Owner Eugene Melnyk is getting sued, because he's $900K in debt to an Indian casino.

I don't know where else to put it but I saw that they've finally started tearing down the old Colisée, having just taken out all the seats a couple weeks ago. Seems like they can't implode it because of all the buildings around it, they'll have to do it the hard way, so it'll take like a year. Still hope the new arena gets an NHL team before I peace out of following this dumbass league for good.

Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Boise, Honolulu, and Birmingham all need teams before a return to Quebec can even be discussed.

Reopening the NHL CBA could mean no 2020 World Cup of Hockey

To prevent what happened in 2004, where the World Cup was immediately followed by a lockout, the NHL said the other day they won't hold it in 2020 if either side opts out of the CBA, which they can do that year.

Basically, the league pulled out of the Olympics to promote their own tournament... which now has a non-insignificant chance of not happening at all.  And if that's not Peak NHL, I don't know what is.

I'm revisiting this because I stumbled upon a news story today from January that seems to've passed with nary a mention; but amidst the news today that Russia was given a 4-year ban on all international sporting events, I went to see if they would also be prevented from participating in the upcoming, NHL-run World Cup of Hockey... only to find out that there won't be a 2020 World Cup of Hockey; they cancelled it this past January due to the CBA dispute. (You know, the CBA that was extended 7 months later?) They're apparently going to try for 2021, but we'll see how that holds up.

So yes, they pulled out of the Olympics so they could host their own international tournament, which then proceeded to be cancelled due to labour disputes. Good job as usual, NHL.

Their own international tournament they revived from the dead, promising it would be held at regular intervals this time, we promise.

This league is run by buffoons. Why does hockey hurt me like this?

Oh hey, an update already: It's not happening in 2021 either!

EDIT: wait a minute, something just occurred to me about this:

Quote

The proposed tournament would have taken place in February 2021, with the league taking a break in order to stage the event.

In February, interrupting the NHL season, aka the other big reason why the NHL pulled out of the Olympics

This :censored:-ing league, man

Nobody will ever take that tournament seriously if it's only held whenever they feel like it. 1996, 2004, 2016 what is that?

And 2016 was a GD joke with the U23 North American team who, yes, were very fun and made the Greg Wyshinskis of the world rock hard, but it cannibalized the national team for USA so you had a lot of fans in the states lose interest when our hamstrung team went 3 and out.

The whole thing was stupid. Either participate in the Olympics or hold an international tournament on a regular schedule. The World Baseball Classic is also stupid, but at least they've managed to hold it every 4 years.

You're not accounting for the 2032 lockout.

If Bettman is still the commissioner (and as long as he is breathing, he will be), we should account for a lockout or 3 in the next 15 years.

Ever since I was a kid watching the Olympics and the World Juniors, it has been always been my dream to put on the maple leaf and represent my country roman numerals and represent my specific age group within my continent.

I'm so happy to revive this thread. It brings me such a weird sense of community.

I'm not saying it's time to fire up the Whitesnake yet, but maybe keep the playlist handy.

They didn't take enough money away from the fire fighters and teachers to pay them?
