2015 NFL Season-Now with Playoff Talk

While Cam Newton did his celebratory high-five lap around the stadium on Sunday (like he does after every home win), a Seahawks fan who stayed dangled a 12th Man flag in front of him. Cam grabbed it and threw it onto the field. Not angrily. He was smiling the whole way through.

This action prompted one Seahawk fan to post this note to a local Seattle news station's Facebook page:

Seahawks fans aren't just fans, guys.

While Cam Newton is practicing to play for a conference championship, Russell Wilson will not be practicing football for the rest of the season and will be raising flags at children's hospitals. So... taste those apples, Panthers fans.

Nah. They haven't won enough. I cannot be among of The Best Fans in Football™ just yet. :)

That letter is just ridiculous. I'm not a huge Cam Newton fan but he does do a lot of charity work from what I have heard. And I don't drink the blue and green Kool Aid. I can't completely warm up to Wilson. I am probably one of the biggest critics of him still.

GAWD. I never thought I'd see a flag-burning debate in football. I think I'm rooting for the Cardinals now, just because Cam Newfon seems to attract this kind of stupid and I can only imagine what will happen if he goes to the Super Bowl.

In the parodic, mocking sense?  Yes.  This is a fanbase that fetishizes the number 12 so much that it got into a legal  battle with Texas A&M (AKA the most insane college FB fanbase) over it.

Welp, that lady takes her sports a little too seriously. It's not like Cam Newton sacrificed a random Seahawks fan at midfield.

Any fan or fan base that thinks they are better than any other fan of any other team instantly reduces themselves to being less than any other fan of any other team.

You are not special snowflakes.  You are just meatsacks with money that the NFL wants.  You suck.  You're worthless.  Your death is meaningless, as there are others who will take your place.

Shut up.

This is like the 4th or 5th open letter that Cam newton has forced out of the opposition's fanbase after the Panthers beat them, and all of them have been utterly ridiculous. I'm a Falcons fan who's never really been fond of the Panthers, but I'm honestly rooting for Cam at this point because he's been out there having a fabulous old time while idiots expose themselves as such along the way. It is hilarious seeing people get this huffy over football.

It's probably because Newton's Panthers won these games and Cam acting like he did rubbed people the wrong way. There's nothing wrong with celebrating after every score; tossing the ball into the stands for a little kid.

It's just salty, salty people who write these letters because their team lost at the hands of Newton's Panthers.

What I tried to explain to my Seattle coworkers was that 12 thing that fully ripped off Texas A&M and like dozens of other high school and college programs (there is no denying this) only took off because it's a way for local businesses to get in on the Seahawks money without having to pay for the licensing. Also, they're only exceptionally loud because the stadium was designed to manufacture noise, not because they're more passionate than anyone else. Every NFL city has a relationship with their football team, Seattle is not special in that regard.

Your 12 flag is not sacred, the Seahawks won the super bowl with less class than any team since the 05 Steelers, and god doesn't care about sports. Get lost.

I don't want to watch Denver get destroyed in another Super Bowl with Manning throwing grapefruits to the opposing defense, but I like that idea way better than having to watch New England in yet another Super Bowl. Boston sports will get their due. I don't know when, but it'll happen. This gravy train those fans have been riding for 15 years can't go on forever. New England is going to win this game 30-17 and it will be really boring.

I think both NFC teams would beat either AFC team so this to me is the NFL championship game right here. I prefer Carolina because I like the way they play and I like Cam Newton because he bothers people like Sarah the Seahawks fan so much. With the Cardinals I'm conflicted because I would love to see Larry Fitzgerald get the ring that was stolen from him in 2008, but on the other hand Carson Palmer winning a title for another team would bother me for a long time.

I'd take St. Louis Cardinals fans over Seahawks fans any day of the week. At least the Cards have the history and the success to make some sense of the attitude. The Seahawks win ONE Super Bowl and basically turn into this generation's Dallas Cowboys fan. There hasn't ever been a team in any sport who I've soured on so completely and so quickly than the Seahawks, and that fanbase is a big reason why.

As for me, I'll be pulling for the Cardinals. Living in Tempe for almost four years forced me to watch those guys every weekend, and they actually went from complete and total digs**t to really damn good, and that's been fun as hell to watch. They've basically improved little by little every week since Arians came in, and that's such a good example of how to rebuild a team. Other than my Devils, they are the ONLY Phoenix area sports team I actually like now. Go Cards.

But, I'd be cool with the Panthers, too. Carolina is in Tampa's division, but Cam Newton is just so damn cool. He's an MVP talent, yet he's kind of in that same mold as Colin Kaepernick where he's constantly placed under a microscope and scrutinized for every little thing while guys like Russell Wilson are felated by the media on their way to the next twelve-roomed children's hospital. It's pretty much impossible for me not to root for a guy like Cam Newton in that regard.

Growing up in Raiders Country, it's still hard for me to not cringe a little bit when Denver wins, but Peyton Manning kinda snuffed out my Broncos hatred. He could be quarterbacking the Cowboys and I'd still root for him. He's definitely my favorite player in the game and I don't even care if he wins the Super Bowl, I just wanna see him snuff out Brady one final time before the spring breaks and his head falls off. And I want this SO BAD. No matter the outcome of the Super Bowl, getting to see him go out at home after a huge win like that (In orange, no less!) would be such a great cap to his career.

I'd rather drill concrete screws into my toes than have to see the Pats in another Super Bowl. Hopefully their plane depressurizes somewhere over the Rockies on the way to the game.

I mean, that letter is ridiculous, but it's still pretty douchey for Cam to rip down fans' signs and banners. Yes, these are well-to-do people if they're sitting near the field at an NFL game, but he's still taking their money for the $50 or whatever the hell they spent on that flag. And yes, it's plenty douchey to celebrate your team's loss (?!) by going down to the field and taunting the opposing team with your flag. Anyway, I like Cam in general, but if he could just stop stealing things from fans, that would be cool.

Alright, let's bring the actual video into the equation: https://vine.co/v/iOtXVEWVYqH

I mean, the fan kinda threw it down there, almost trying to get this to happen. Although the whole "throw away your team's stuff" might not be the best course of action to create a home field advantage, I love the whole edge around Cam and the letters from people who feel like America is being ruined from a dance. This was the same sort of thing that's been missing since Steve Smith left, that polarizing player that you either love or hate.

For these reasons, I need the Panthers and Patriots to play the Super Bowl.

Cam's the best. Overwrought fans of any franchise are the worst.

I'm trying to think of any in-the-moment franchise that has fans people think are okay. The best I come up with is Kansas City Royals fans and Baltimore Ravens fans. Though I bet that changes if the Royals win again, and I may be overlooking some Ravens fans' collective blind spot when it comes to Ray Rice.

I do think St. Louis Cardinal and Boston fans are a special kind of terrible. I think we have more recency bias when it comes to everyone else.

Fun facts: If the Patriots win this will be their 9th Super Bowl appearance which will pass Pittsburgh and Dallas for the most all-time. If Denver wins it will tie them with New England, Pittsburgh, and Dallas at 8.

More - The Cowboys played in 8 of the first 30 Super Bowls. Haven't been in one since. The Patriots have played in 7 of the last 20.

Cam Newton is a spectacular player who enjoys what he does. It actually feels like he is playing a game, not doing a job. God forbid, he play with enthusiasm and passion. Panthers vs. Patriots in the Super Bowl would be my ideal matchup. The two best quarterbacks in the NFL facing off in the big game.

Seattle nulled & voided its 12th man title once & for all last January when enough of them were clamoring to get back into the stadium as their Seahawks began taking back the NFC championship game from the Packers.

That was social media winning.
