The Patriots have been using multiple skill position players from the "Triumph of Death" Rams the last few games.  Those teams had no offense whatsoever.

If it was so obvious that the Patriots had no offense, why did you pick them to win?

Over the last month the Patriots have only been scoring 18 points per game and Carolina has been scoring 33 points per game. They have a far superior offense.

New England was injured -- Edelman being out is a pretty big deal. They looked pretty damn solid against a very good KC defense last week. And its hard to say Carolina is more explosive when their passing game ranked firmly in the bottom third of the league. And their offensive line was not better than New England's this year.

The AFC coming down to a 2 point conversion was good stuff. Before the game I said "of course the Patriots get the kicker that never ever misses" and then he did! Great decision to move the PAT back. I thought the game would be a boring Patriots slog and I was wrong and I'm glad for that.

The rare case for me where I don't have a problem with either team in the championship round. I will be pulling for Denver because I've been a Peyton Manning fan for his whole career and it's criminal his doofus brother has more rings than he does. Also, it'd be a hell of a way to go out. Elway went out on top and with the same franchise, but they won the year before so the stakes didn't feel as high, Elway's body also wasn't falling apart in the same way as Manning. He was still playing at a high level that last season and everybody knew that Broncos team was gonna be really good. If Manning can pull off the same thing with this team it'll be even more epic. All that, plus he's more likely to retire if he wins. If he loses I can see him trying to play one more year with a team like Houston or Los Angeles (feels good to type that again) and that would be even more sad than parts of this season were.

The Panthers are fun though and I like Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly so I'll just enjoy the game and probably eat a lot of chips.

Manning has looked so bad lately I figured the Patriots defense would smother the Broncos offense and Brady alone could give the Patriots victory in the "brokenback" battle that followed.

/Also "something something rams80 can't have nice things and nice things include the Patriots not winning the Super Bowl, so why pick otherwise?"

Silly taglines for the Super Bowl:

New England vs. Arizona: The Northeast vs. Southwest Super Bowl

New England vs. Carolina: Super Bowl XXXVIII Redux

Arizona vs. Denver: The Mountain Time Zone Teams' Super Bowl

Denver vs. Carolina: The "John Fox was our coach the the last time we were here" Super Bowl.

It is what it is.

I don't care how "explosive" the Panthers' offense is, the Patriots averaged only two fewer points per game and they had the best  QB ever... Denver did pretty well against them. The Broncos have a shot.

The Patriots have the second best QB ever, but the point remains.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really looking forwards to this game. Especially since it's a game I can just enjoy and be totally fine with either outcome. But that said, the only thing I'm not looking forwards to for this Super Bowl is the fact that CBS is covering it. It's better than Buck falling asleep at the mic, but not by much.

Nantz: "It looks like Kuechly may have grabbed a little bit of Daniels' jersey, do you think that's pass interference Phil?"

Simms: "NO."

*awkward silence*

Nantz: "....well anyways it's 3rd and 7 on the Carolina 43..."

The Panther offense is way more explosive than New England. They have the ability to turn a 10 yard crossing route into an 80 yard TD. NE doesn't have that ability. The Patriots offense is built around quick and short passes. Besides, Gronk (who is the best TE in football right now), the Patriots WR unit is as overrated as they get. They are average to below average WR's without Brady and Bellicheck. (BTW, I agree with you that Carolina doesn't have the best WR unit in the NFL, and that Denver's CB match up well, but Carolina is just so damn explosive. )

Carolina has a far greater offensive line than New England does. I bet that Denver will still get a couple of sacks and QB pressures, but not anywhere near the amount of pressure that they put on Brady today.

Another thing Carolina has that New England doesn't is a running game. New England picked up all of maybe four feet against Denver in both games they played this season because their offense is almost entirely dependent on the pass. They have a pretty tiny offense compared to Carolina, and that size is going to help the Panthers neutralize the Broncos pass rush much more effectively. Also, Carolina has a LOT more size and speed on the defensive side of the ball, as well. They're similar to the 02 Tampa Defense in terms of speed but they have even bigger linebackers.

Honestly, this is probably one of the most overlooked 15-1 NFL teams I can ever remember. They're so incredibly well rounded and really don't have a major hole anywhere. They have probably the best interior linebacker in the league leading that defense and the likely MVP at quarterback leading the offense. This team could quietly be one of the best teams we've ever seen IMO.

I'll take Buck and Aikman over Nantz and Simms every single time. Phil Simms seems like a legitimately stupid man and Nantz adds nothing to what I'm already seeing with my own eyes and it always sounds like his end game calls were scripted days in advance instead of being organic moment of thoughts. He's a good golf commentator, but I don't like when he does other sports.

I don't know much about the actual X's and O's of football and Aikman, and even Collinsworth occasionally will provide some insight to what was happening on a given play. With Simms you can forget about that ever happening.

Also, CBS has Mike Carey who is always wrong. They need to find another official to do that job next season.

I do like Aikman and Collinsworth, and to be honest, I really like Fox coverage for the most part (and they have my favorite graphics package as well). I just would rather they have someone calling thier big games that actually sounds like he or she is interested in the game, rather than sounding like calling the game is a tasking job that's taken half heartedly (that's why I've always been a big Gary Thorne fan, he always is as into the game as the fans in the stands are).

CBS is definitely my least favorite though. Between Nantz exerting all his energy into getting Simms to say more than three sentences per quarter and the total bore that is thier halftime coverage, it's a pretty difficult network to get into. And agreed on Carey as well, it's amazing how it seems whatever play he's talking about seems to be a completely different play than what you're looking at.

IMO it's not even close in terms of the best football broadcast package: NBC.  In terms of play by play guys, you can't get too many guys that are better than Al Michaels.  And although Collinsworth is no Madden and gets annoying sometimes, he is very insightful.

Fox definitely has great broadcast graphics but their insistence to have Joe Buck call football games is crippling. He is terrible and at the most should be confined to baseball. Aikman is good but is ruined by being paired with Buck.

I've always been relatively high on Nantz and Simms, but IMO they are the only good part of CBS broadcasts, and they're not even that good. Mike Carey is literally a joke, the sideline reporters are laughable, and the graphics are nothing special. CBS actually has several good broadcasters like Greg Gumbel and Ian Eagle, and if they rotated big games with those guys and Nantz-Simms it'd be a little better.

It's a shame we have to wait 2 more years before NBC gets the Super Bowl again.

I completely agree with you on every count. Don't forget Greg Olsen, who may be the second best tight end in the league behind Gronk. He's probably Cam's best and most effective receiving weapon altogether.

If Carolina wins this, I think they definitely deserve to be in the discussion of best teams in recent memory. Of course that discussion can't really be carried all the way until after the Super Bowl, but should they win it, I think a lot of people will look back on them retrospectively and think "dang, they really were that great all along."

On a uni-related note, the Broncos will wear white in Super Bowl 50. I expected this, mostly because of the Broncos' 0-4 record in Super Bowls when wearing orange. Plus the Panthers have been wearing white all postseason and it hasn't exactly worked out well for Seattle and Arizona.

Of course, this honestly only matters to me because I'm a uni nut. I'm not superstitious, but apparently someone in the Denver front office is.

I'll give you that New England was injured and because of that they haven't been as good, but from Nov. 22nd to now, Carolina has scored less than 30 points once. In that same time frame, the Patriots only scored 30+ points once and that was against the league's worst team, the Titans. No doubt Denver's defense was extremely impressive against New England and I'm not trying to say otherwise if I'm coming across that way lol. Carolina is a completely different animal.

These rankings say Carolina had the league's 2nd best OL (NE was ranked 25th) and even without any sort of rankings, if you use the old eye test, I really don't know how anyone could unbiasedly believe that the Patriots' OL was comparable to Carolina's.

Cowboys - Lakers - LAFC - USMNT - LA Rams - LA Kings - NUFC
