I was juuuuust saying earlier tonight that this team could be contenders. Then I remembered that Andy Reid was their coach. And that they're the Chiefs.

That wasn't a clock management issue, running is the correct play there. They had enough time to score if Charles could break a run; if not, just kneel and take it to overtime. I'm sure they weren't counting on one of the best backs in the game fumbling in a situation like that. The bottom line is that ball security is the most important factor in that situation, and Charles failed at that.

Did watch the end but read the box score.

Fire Andy Reid now. This is the best you're going to get -- glimmers of greatness ruined by stupidity and good luck going the other guy's way.

Also, even though Manning had a decent stat line, I'm not convinced he's still good. He's got the late-season shakiness about him, and it's only game 2.

Well, there's a few things about Manning -- I'm not a scout by any stretch, but he's looking like he's having less issues throwing down field than he was towards the end of last season with his leg injury (I mean deep balls like streaks -- his arm strength didn't look great on deep outs, etc.). The accuracy has been iffy, but the balls haven't been bad. He didn't look great, but I think it's a combination of shaky pass protection (like the end of last season), a terrible running game (very unlike the end of last season), and they're trying to fit him into Kubiak's offense. I think at the end of the game they went with something a little more like what Manning is used to and he, and the offense, looked considerably better. You're not wrong, though. There is still a shakiness about him, but I think if they go back to what he's ran his entire career he'll be way better.

He might still have some issues but this defensive unit looks like it can carry the Broncos if they can knock off the dumb penalties and get anything out of the offense.

By the way, I think the Chiefs played it right at the end. The Broncos pass rush was on point, so they could have sat back, played conservative defense, and still have been able to get to Alex Smith and maybe force a mistake -- especially if Ware and/or Miller could just pin their ears back and go after him.

I had a feeling the Chiefs would go with the Ugly Look (monochrome) tonight. A quick first quarter glance at my TV confirmed my suspicions. Also confirmed my decision to watch PBS Newshour and some local music, arts, and travel programming this evening.

You guys all ripped me during the decade + I ripped Andy Reid's play calling and clock management. I didn't see game but don't need to.

Apology accepted.

Wait, why am I blaming Andy Reid for last night again? Was it because he didn't have faith in Alex Smith to drive 50 yards in 30 seconds with one timeout? Was it because he didn't take a knee and take the game to OT? Because, honestly, both of those things sound much more Andy Reid like than giving the ball to your best player and seeing if he could make anything happen.

Why are NFL head coaches such knuckleheads about clock management? It's like they've never played Madden.

Actually, it's like they've never coached in the NFL. That's how you're supposed to play Madden. Fake punting from your own fifteen on 4th and 7 or running a draw when that's the least reasonable play can catch the other guy off-guard. And if you botch it, it's just a video game.

Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb cost the Eagles rings. Hell they could easily have won xxxix but McNabb puked and Reid was insistent on calling his 35-second long plays that take the play clock all the way down to nothing instead of running a 2-min offense.

On another note - do we have any Portuguese members? Anyone know of a place in Lisbon that shows NFL games?

I keep saying that when it comes to the Delay of Game penalty. That should never, ever happen because you have the play clock staring at you in the face from multiple angles.

Andy Reid's Eagles had several delay of game penalties called - AFTER TIME OUTS!

I think at this point it's not even him specifically screwing something up. It's more, like, OF COURSE this happened again to an Andy Reid coached team. It's kind of like how Tony Romo was for awhile. He made some REALLY stupid mistakes at times, but he also had some terrible luck. The combination just seemes to build this momentum that sometimes that seems nearly impossible for some guys to escape.

Playing Madden is easy because you're the head coach, the offensive coordinator, and the defensive coordinator playing with robotic players. You don't have to worry about multiple voices discussing the calling of each play or getting the right personnel out there or any other humanized elements of the game that Madden can't simulate.

With actual football, you have an offensive coordinator that runs the play by the head coach. If the head coach wants a different play, that's where the time management starts to become an issue. The radio to the QB turns off when there's around 15 seconds left on the play clock, leaving little time for the coaches and/or QB to get the play in, the protection in order, etc.

Coaching 53 egotistical players and maintaining a coaching staff that's got even bigger egos isn't easy.

ESPN's broadcasting live from Orchard Park today. Rex Ryan's running his mouth. The Bills are (maybe) ascendant.

This has all the markings for a 31-10 beatdown by the Pats today. I hope the good guys win, but these are the games that always go to the evil empire. There's no justice when it comes to the Pats.

Everyone on ESPN picked the Bills yesterday, Guinness will have someone there to measure crowd noise... this is all setting up for a big disappointment. I seriously considered not watching, but I think I'm going to bury my sorrows in a big plate of nachos instead.

It's all too much. Taylor is starting his second NFL game. The Pats are something like 100-2 against the Bills over the last decade.

Belichek is an ass and Brady is a jerk, but the Patriots are still the best-prepared NFL franchise week by week. They're probably super excited to face Taylor today.

I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Dez is now out 10-12 weeks due to bone graft surgery to repair his broken foot he suffered against the Giants on Opening Weekend.

A tough break, but I think Dallas can get through it. Terrence Williams gets his chance to shine as the #1 WR, and you've got guys like Devin Street and Lucky Whitehead with a chance to strut their stuff. And Cole Beasley gets the slot.
