Damn, the Bucs old set was so sexy. You never fully appreciate a good uniform until it's gone.

Their previous set was and will always be my favorite NFL uniform of all time. Nothing will ever look better than this:

This look right here is half of the reason I'm even a Bucs fan in the first place. That look was absolutely perfect IMO. Everything fit so well together and it was the best example of balancing traditional football aesthetics with modern flair I've ever seen.

What they have now is flaming hot garbage and there isn't a SINGLE thing about the current set that is better than what they previously had.

This may sound dramatic, but it's true. When they ditched their pervious set, a good chunk of my rooting interest went with it.

Everyone complained about the old Bucs set and now nobody is happy. Sometimes you have to be ok with "good enough" and leave it be.

Everyone? I've never heard anything negative about it...

It was always "it's tired" or "it's dated" or complaints about pewter or too many colors,

or more common, "THEY NEED TO BRING BACK BRUCE!" and a love affair with creamsicles.

Well, now it's changed, and nobody is happy.

I don't remember that. I thought it was widely accepted as a modern classic. I remember I once complained about it, calling it derivative of the 49ers look and was thoroughly thrashed in the argument that followed.

The orange/Bruce had its fans, but most of the praise was along the lines of "I think the Bucs have two great looks, so they can stay with the current set with the throwbacks as alternates."

I've said it since we found out the Bucs were rebranding - they were just like the Chargers in 2006. They had a great modern set and also a great, throwback set. Either one of them would have been great as a full-time uni. And I figured that just like the Chargers, the Bucs would throw both of them into a blender and come out with pureed crap. They'd try to please everybody and end up pleasing nobody. That's partially what happened. The Bucs used less of the creamsicle inspiration in their current crap than I expected, but the use of orange in this set is particularly forced and unnecessary when compared to the subtle way they used it in the last set. The orange slashes against the grayish brown (no such thing as matte pewter) looks awful.

I agree it was a Good set but what was modern about it? Color scheme maybe?

Yup. And...every single combo of the previous Bucs set worked.

I'm quite fond of the creamsicles but also liked the 97 set, especially the helmet.

The only thing I didn't like about it was I thought the orange outline was out of place and unnecessary, but still a nice ode to the creamsicles.

They were perfect with the 97 set and then the creamsicles as an alt, but then the one helmet rule ruined that. And soon after the rebrand ruined everything.

There is absolutely nothing redeeming about the new uniforms except maybe the chrome face mask. Jerseys, font, helmet, pants, logo sets and wordmarks all downgrades. Oh and the pewter looks either brown or gray depending on the lighting.

Like everyone has stated, the bucs 1997-2013 uniforms were awesome. They fit all their colors without clutter (ahem chargers). I'd make a few tweaks like on the whites, outline the ships and wordmark in red. If they'd update, take the new flag, ship, red and slap it on the old template. The new unis are a downgrade...and a bigger fall for them is they get compared to the a+ previous set. A few tweaks, they'd be tolerable just like the browns need a few tweaks. I'm not going to beat a dead horse, but look how long the bills had their navy shoulder set so I bet these will both be around for a while

Never felt the love for the Buccaneers set. Middle of the road, looked like the overdesigned 49ers but more drab, sometimes committed the sin of four colors on four uniform tiers (pewter helmet, red jersey, white pants, black socks). Obviously they're better than the atrocities the Buccaneers wear now, but I never thought they were ever near the top.

I like the Bucs throwback set just fine. But the throwback set uses the original orange which is MILES above that drab shade they used till the switch in 1997.

Also, of course I like the Bucs original set. I'm a Bucs fan. But there's no way to deny that by the time the change was made that set was nearly universally panned. It was a really terribly dated look by the time it was cut loose. It was basically like my parents 1970s kitchen before they remodeled it. Orange linoleum, weird green counter tops, yellow refrigerator, shag carpet (yes, part of it extended into the kitchen). Maybe it was cool at some point, but never in my life time.

Don't worry, that will all come back. Yesterday, I was running a training session for new adjunct art profs and half of them were dressed like tugboat captains from the 19th century.

And that was their casual wear.

Yeah that the Bucs' creamsicles have become this sort of ironically cool, nostalgic-induced throwback favorite is straight revisionism. In 1996 they were a joke. NOBODY liked them and everyone agreed they needed to go. If this board existed back then we'd all have been gushing over the pewters.

They changed in 1997 and everyone collectively went "yeah now they look like a football team. Okay." It's not a coincidence the team got better.

I fully admit that my appreciation for the Bucs' creamsicles is recent/revisionist in nature. I can't explain why. I just loved the way it looked when they threw back to it a few years ago. Maybe it was a combination of the original, more vibrant orange, HD TV, and my growing appreciation of kitch in sports logo design.

That's not to say that I think it needs to be the team's primary (though it wins outright if the choices are it and the current garbage heap). The 1997 set is superior, and probably should have remained the team's look. The current mess should serve as a cautionary tale to people who want change for its own sake.

As a pre-teen at the time, I loved the creamsicle set. I thought the colors were great, and I was upset they always wore the white jerseys when they played the Bears. I think I only actually saw them in the orange jerseys once in their original run. However, I did like the change to pewter. Same with the Broncos: I loved their orange crush set, but also liked the championship set. However, that was different - I thought Denver's unis were decent but still greatly preferred the last set.

The hatred for the Bucs' set was two-fold. The team was horrible and everybody thought the logo looked gay. Because the team sucked, everybody thought the colors looked soft. However, I haven't heard many people complain about the Tennessee Volunteers wearing just orange and white. They had championship teams and the players were somehow able to get over the emasculation of wearing light orange jerseys. Now, the logo was kitchy (and maybe a scant bit homoerotic), and something which nobody would ever decide to use for an expansion football team today. However, if the Bucs had the success from 1980-96 of the Redskins or San Francisco, I doubt many people would have called that set weak and wanted it replaced.

You can also maybe add in the idea that by the mid-90's, the bright color trends of the last decade were dying down, and we were moving towards the dark colors, aggression and XXX-treme era of the early millennium. So yeah, the Bucs going with a cool, unique color scheme which was darker and featured bold, sinister-looking logos was widely rejoiced. But now we're in the era of bright colors being worn again. And since the Buccaneers were going to destroy their unis anyway, they probably would have been better served avoiding the mess of trying to create a matte pewter and just gone back to the creamsicle colors.

Too bad the Browns didn't get the memo...

I would have built a new Buccaneers identity around the new pirate ship logo and the creamsicle colors. That color scheme is better for this decade of re-embracing bright colors, but the old logo wasn't going to cut it. However, no one would make gay jokes about it anymore, there is that.
