NHL 15-16: wife-beaters, adulterers, cokeheads, rapists, pill-poppers, AND METHODISTS

Thanks to the wonderful trade and demotion, John Scott in St. John's is closer to Warsaw, Poland than he is to his pregnant wife in Phoenix.

Not necessarily, his wife went back to Michigan

1. I hope there's not lead in their water for the baby's sake.

2. He earns $575,000 a year right now. Cry me a river.

As for his ASG participation, which no one seems sure of right now via demotion, I could see the NHL saving face by letting him be some type of associate coach or whatever. Maybe stick a mic on him.

It's all worth it to put Ryan Lambert and his non-union Mexican equivalent Dave Lozo in their place. Next they can write about how this never would have happened in the NWHL!

Right, but the NHL (acting as the primary lender for the Phoenix Coyotes) put him there. It's very sketchy, but I can't take the crocodile tears over how he can't be close to his pregnant wife. Maybe all the Puck Daddy/Reddit/HFBoards posters who thought it would be a laugh riot to troll the league and put the worst professional hockey player in the All-Star Game for the lulz should start a fund to cover whatever bonus he's losing out on by not going, or maybe buy some baby clothes, or something if you really care about John Scott so much and not just getting one over on some crusty old dolts who barely know how the internet works.

Or, you know, everybody could just lighten up and let this fun stupid thing occur.

Obviously John Scott has no place in any ASG that doesn't involve eating burritos or punching smaller men in the head, nor did his career merit this feel-good moment, but this isn't exactly comparable to when Mountain Dew was taking name suggestions on their apple variant, which infamously led to the winner being "Hitler did nothing wrong."

This was a stupid campaign that gave an undeserving oaf an opportunity to lumber around and get some money in the process. I guess if traditionalists want to get all butthurt over a deserving athlete missing out on his bonus, that's one thing, but your spite of this seems more in the line of being a contrarian than actually giving a rat's ass.

The NHL could have let it happened and fixed the voting process next year.

The league needs all the positive publicity it can get. Exiling a player to Canada away from his pregnant wife is the worst possible outcome of the whole deal. It didn't need to happen this way.

You know that I, the trope-namer of Only in the Goddamned NHL, would not pull punches against this stupid league. But the league was put in a no-win situation here. John Scott was voted into the All-Star Game on the premise that the NHL is stupid: stupid for allowing fan voting susceptible to internet chicanery, stupid for letting John Scott remain in the NHL in the first place. The league felt shown up and undid the way in which they were shown up, leading people to say, again, that the NHL is stupid. There is nothing new under the sun: this is not only the All-Star Rory Fitzpatrick stunt all over again, it's every single time that high school douchebags voted a misfit onto the homecoming court and said it was to be "inclusive." "You won't let us show you how little we respect you" is not a valid complaint.

All this "wah his pregnant wife" stuff rings so hollow from a contingent that, remember, has loathed John Scott and his place in the NHL for years. Scott is not just a goon but the most artless and useless of what few goons are left in the league, once injuring Phil Kessel in a preseason game. John Scott was no one's hero when he did that. No one stuck up for John Scott when he was a dead spot on the Blackhawks' roster in the two years out of seven that they didn't get to at least the third round of the playoffs. He's been an object of derision if not contempt for the way he injures players and does little else all while taking a roster spot from someone who can play the game. The people leading the charge for him are not the last of the fighting sentimentalists, trying to make a stand that there's still a place for the enforcers' code. It's the people who think he's a joke. I don't need to go to bat for people making a joke of someone.

I'm not defending the NHL engineering a trade, but you can't be surprised or angry when part of the All-Star Game being meaningless (the point of this whole thing) is that the votes are meaningless, too. It's tone-deafness on the part of the NHL, but only in response to childishness.

The difference between Vote for Rory and John Scott is that John Scott involved the NHL diddling around with player personnel moves.

When John Scott was leading the votes, we all knew why and thought it was funny, but ultimately figured the NHL would do what they did with Rory Fitzpatrick and magically lose votes or move someone else into starting position. Because Scott was leading the votes, they never released the voting totals, like they had almost every year prior. They could have very easily moved Max Domi or Johnny Gaudreau or whoever into the top Pacific spot without having to even explain a miraculous jump/loss in votes. But they didn't do any of that, let John Scott win and gave it the same fanfare (FWIW) as the other ASG captains.

Admiral, you said the NHL was in a no-win situation, and I agree. However, I'd say the NHL chose the :censored: ier of its options. They could have just rid it out, got "shown up" and let the fans (and Scott for that matter, as he was) have a little fun with it. It probably wouldn't have even been that bad, overall. Instead, the NHL made itself look more stupid and petty by practically orchestrating Scott being involved in some other trade to ensure his ineligibility. Whether it was the NHL making the Coyotes do it or the Coyotes doing the NHL a solid doesn't really matter. It still looks bad. All this extra stuff about Scott and his pregnant wife are just add on stuff that make it look worse. His family was still going to deal with him being away if the Coyotes sent him back to the AHL as they had several times already or if he actually had gone to Nashville for the game. It just looks worse when they send him to the ass end of the continent.

Basically, instead of not taking itself so damn seriously for once and letting a fun thing happen, the NHL chose to be stupid and petty. But hey, it's the NHL.

It was stupid and petty to mock and shame John Scott and the NHL by voting him into an exhibition for skill players to take a stand against enforcers. It's as sad that the NHL had to stoop to Greg Wyshynski's level as it is that the NHL could stoop lower than they usually are.

This is a sad little window.

Why has the WNBA been a punchline from its inception while anything short of saying the NWHL is wonderful is an attack on women everywhere? Really, I don't even think ill of the NWHL, just the empty virtue-signalling that has beset a lot of the hockey world in the last couple years, and I don't think there's anything sad in finding emptiness in virtue signalling.

That's what I've been wondering. All things considered with the screwed up nature of this, The NHL is really stupid enough to not AT LEAST pay him the bonus he would've received for making the All Star game? I mean, of course they're that stupid, but, really?

Anyone know the mailing address to the NHL league offices? I think we should get together and mail them a few dozen bags of those candy dicks people have been sending the "rebels" in Oregon.

I still love how all these so-called "fans" are taking none of the blame for the John Scott fiasco. If it weren't for you, this situation wouldn't have happened.

No. The fans followed the rules. They voted in a captain, it just happened to be John Scott. The NHL could have squashed this earlier.

Scott was unsure about going at the start but he talked to his family who told him to go and he wanted to do it for his kids. He was ready to go to the game and he even ordered t-shirts for his team with a picture of him saying something about being the captain.

No fan could have ever thought Scott would have been traded because they voted him into the All Star Game.
