NBA G-League Still Needs to Expand

I think in about 25 years the NBA will have a multi level farm system like MLB does. Perhaps not as deep as baseball, but at the very least a second development league will have started to form within the NBA (pretty much the equivalent of AA in baseball).

We'll more than likely see every current NBA team with a G League affiliate with the next 5 years.

*BUMP*

Two questions.

  1. What do you all think will be "the next step" once every team in the NBA has it's own G-League team?
  2. Once every current team has a G-League affiliate, will any future expansion in the NBA require the ownership to secure a location for a G-League team?

I think we might see a day where the G League will offer high school prodigies, and one & done’s a chance to make some money. Then after completing a minimum amount of time becoming eligible for the draft. Possibly keep some prospects from going overseas if college isn’t for them.

Looks like we reached that day

The max player salary is $26K, so his agency is most likely going to supplementing that.  A shoe deal will likely be merch only since nobody is going to see him in the G League as opposed to being at Syracuse for a season, as there's no guarantee that he is going to get any run. Plus, he not property of the parent club, so after a year, he goes into the NBA draft pool and he's likely a "one and done" for that NBA franchise who put him on their G squad.

It's essentially this, G League for $26K+, but you're on your own in terms of expenses and living for six months versus seven months in college where you get $4-8K in a stipend, plus a minimum class load, free room/board, better strength/conditioning and medical, TV exposure and likely better travel.

Hmmm. The next step for the G League may be increasing the salaries. If they start offering average salaries in the $40-70K range, then you may really start to see those one and dones bypassing college ball.

They don't make enough money to cover their cost now.

Why would they increase the salaries?

It's not like cable tv wants to pay for 30+ G League games.

Folks would like to see that kid play for Syracuse, not the Iowa Wolves.

It may become necessary to increase the salaries. G League has to compete with the international leagues for those players that aren't quite ready for NBA level competition. Plus more and more people's attitudes towards the NCAA are changing. Let's be honest they are not true amateur athletes. The athletes may not get paid to play, but they still bring in millions of dollars to their schools that they never get to touch (unless they made an under the table deal with a shady booster).

I don't blame that kid for pursuing $26K a year in the G League than $0 at Syracuse. Especially if he does not truly want to go to college when he has other options. We don't make a big deal out of baseball players that choose the minors over college ball. Why is it becoming a big deal that basketball players might rather play in the NBA's minor league than college?

$0 at the cuse still gets the kid "three hots and a cot" plus a strength staff getter than most nationwide and a semester of "cost of living" which is like a semester check for $3-4K.

The Kings plan on moving their G League team from Reno to Stockton pending NBA approval for next season

It sucks to see these teams move because of the fans that are left behind, but it makes sense for the parent clubs to have them closer. Sioux Falls is a perfect example (Heat).

So how many NBA teams do not have G League teams?

As of this moment, 3 (Nuggets, Pelicans, Trail Blazers)

New Orleans was on pace for an expansion G-League team but things got rocky in Pensacola so that's up in the air now.

The Wizards' new affiliate, the Capital City GoGo is supposed to start this year

Maybe, but I'm guessing Colorado Springs is the more likely option

I spoke to soon. Turns out Reno is over 1,000 miles away from Denver. Counterproductive if the plan is for all the G League teams to be somewhat close to the parent clubs lol

Portland would be somewhat closer but the Blazers will most likely have their affiliate in the Portland area or down in the Eugene/Salem area.

It’s actually under 800.
