Looking for a new computer, what should I get?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to upgrade my computer. The one I currently have been using to create my concepts is almost 6 years old and with the conversion over to Windows 10, the monitor was a bit skewed. I also jumped fully in to Adobe Photoshop and I'm starting my hand at some of the other products, so I think a new computer setup is in order. What types do you guys suggest? Is getting a touchscreen helpful for logo design or no? What other add ons should I consider as well?

Of course, Industry standard in the design field is any Mac, however, if you're comfortable with PC alot of the Chromebooks are powerful, and affordable. Touch screen capability wont help any, simple because you wouldn't be drawing on your monitor. Something like a Wacom Tablet would be the alternative to touch screen, but that's really more on the illustration side.

OK, cool I was thinking along the lines of a desktop as opposed to a laptop but that's a good point. I have a Wacom tablet already, thanks for pointing out the issues with a touchscreen.

If you are a tech-savvy person who could buy and assemble computer components, I'd go with Windows & build your own new computer. The money you'd spend on a Mac would go way, way farther and you could upgrade components piecemeal down the line if you wished.

If you are terrified of opening up a computer case and just want things to work out of the box, get Mac. I'd suggest an iMac or Mac Pro. Don't get a new Macbook or Air.

If you use Mac, be aware that if you have a non-licensed version of Photoshop or other Adobe products, Mac doesn't let cracked software fly. I'm guessing it can still be done, but I don't trust OS X to be indifferent to using torrented material.
