LOGOLYMPIAD - EVENT 1 - Alternate Logo

What about using colors they've used in the past or colors used in alternates and throwbacks? Are those allowed?

"Use colors that are already part of the teams current color scheme."

;)

Exactly. Use the current colors only. I'll expand on this later...

Being a new logo, what does that mean for the use of basketballs and roundels? If a team has a logo / past / present / alternate that features a basketball, does that mean the basketball must look different, or no basketball at all? Same question with roundels. The way that I am understanding this is that we are more or less making a completely new logo based on the teams name and current colors, without using anything that the team has ever used in the past.

You can use existing parts of the current logo or past logos, but that will likely penalize you during the vote.

Sorry for all the questions, but what about using existing elements like wordmarks in your concept?

See above. You can use existing parts, as long as most of the logo is new.

what if its more than 70 pixels i have about 160 my logo is not horizantal than vertical

You may completely use or not the 800 x 530 window available to you. It's up to you, really. I must say I have never seen a submission that used the window fully. It is usually used to lay out the different requirements - in this case here, the current primary logo and your alternate logo.

There has been a lot of questions regarding colors and using parts of existing logos, so I will make a concise post here to hopefully clear both topics.

Colors

Use only current colors for the existing teams. So open up TeamColors (since Colorwerx doesn't seem to be working) and check your team's colors. If it's not there, your entry will be disqualified. It doesn't matter if the team has just unveiled a new shiny logo. If the colors aren't on the site, don't use them. That will be how I either accept or disqualify an entry.

Parts of existing logos / Alternate logo

I mentioned in the initial post that the alternate logo should be strong enough to replace the primary logo, and that was done on purpose. The event is not called secondary logo nor tertiary logo. Therefore you will likely be in a better position to create a new logo than base yours out of the current logo. You may indeed use part of existing logos, but it must not be the only thing you use. For example, you cannot simply remove the wordmark from the primary logo and call it a day. Everyone could do that and it is not the point of the challenge.

However, I will not disqualify your entry if you use a part of the existing logo. You may be penalized during vote, where completely new logos may score better. That will be up to the voters.

I'll update the original post with this information as well.

So even if we have the official Pantones, it's best to go with 'TeamColors?' I mean current Adobe products have Pantone+ but I'm sure there are others out there with older versions which still have the older Pantone color books, where there are some color differences.

You can use the Pantone values - I believe they are listed under PMS for NBA on the TeamColors website.

The general idea is: if a team has three colors listed and you use five, you'll be disqualified. If you use three colors that are really close to the ones listed on the website, you'll be OK. If you use green, yellow and black for the Pistons, for example, you're out.

I have already received several entries, but some of them have issues. Since this is the first event, I will allow people to resubmit, otherwise I will have to disqualify the entries.

The issues with three specific entries:

  • One entry is merging elements from two different already existing logos to create the alternate logo. There is nothing new in this logo, so it cannot be accepted.
  • One entry has been sent and it is basically the primary logo without the wordmark. This will not be accepted.
  • One entry has been done for the Ontario Reign of the ECHL (I kid you not). Moreover, it doesn't respect the size of the template, nor the naming convention of the file, nor the title of the email. Please take the time to read the original post completely.

I received an entry that was sized on a 530px wide by 800px high template. The member can resubmit on the right template size with no penalty, otherwise I will have to disqualify the entry.

Keep in mind that I am giving out warnings since this is the first event, but I will not do the same for the next nine events. You should be able to follow the submission rules without any problem from event 2 onwards.

Could I do the Seattle Super Sonics, despite the fact they no longer exist?
you must create an alternate logo for an active team

Well, considering that if they don't exist they wouldn't be active, I would assume the answer is no :P

As ZionEagle pointed out, Seattle is not an active team, so you cannot use that team.

I received an entry with two alternate logos. You should only submit one, even if both are the same with different colors. Pick one and stick with it.

As it is the first event, the user may resubmit without being penalized.

Is it safe to assume that it must respect current NBA primary logo rules (city and team name included)? Or is it allowable to assume Pacers status here?

I was not aware of the current NBA primary logo rules, therefore you do not need to include the city and the name within the logo.

I received an entry on a 1250 x 938 template - likely caused by the high PPI (150) used to export the file to png. The user can resubmit without being penalized.

I also received an entry on a 600 x 800 template. Remember, the template should be a landscape format, not a portrait one. You can also resubmit with no penalty.

Quick question: Would you email participants if their entry was wrong this round?

I will NOT contact you if your entry is wrong, therefore make sure that you comply to these guidelines before submitting your entry.

No. I did not contact anyone via email or personal message. I never do. Any issue with the entries I have received has been added to this thread already. It's up to the participants to check the thread regularly and re-submit their entry in order not to be disqualified.

I will not give warnings after the first event, so members will have to be careful when submitting from event 2 onwards.

OK so I don't have the colors for the team I want to do but I have all but one is it OK if one color is off slightly

How can you not have all the colors for the team? As mentioned in the initial post, if you go to the TeamColors website, the colors are listed as Hexadecimal, RGB, CMYK, and Pantone (PMS) for all teams. Use those values to get the colors needed.

I received an entry with text on the template: "City Teamname Alternate Logo". Do NOT write anything on your submission. You only need to have the current primary logo and your submission on it. The user may resubmit without being penalized for this event.
