Yep, Samardzija to the Giants 5 years 90 million.

Guess he picked the right sport.

But he still cost himself a good amount of money. Thank goodness he passed on the White Sox' offer last year. They offered him something over $100 million for 5 years, I believe. He figured he'd get $150m on the market. I'm astonished that he was able to get $90 million considering he was literally the worst pitcher in baseball last year. But with him going back to the NL and the Giants being the Giants, that wouldn't be a bad bet.

Actually, he'll probably be a huge disappointment with an ERA in the high 4's, but end up pitching well during a few championship runs, so it'll all even out.

I did not follow that too closely...but hopefully he can look at the $90M he's gaining rather than the $10M he's losing.

When you said "literally the worst pitcher in baseball last year" I thought that was highly dubious. So looking at his stats, I am astonished by how bad of a year he had. He appears to have lead the AL in hits (tied), earned runs (tied), and home runs. He had an ERA of nearly 5. It's really funny that two of his three shutouts came last year (not that the rest of his career was all that special...a couple of respectable years where his poor W-L record does not reflect other stats). It's also funny that he attained his career high in wins while posting a 4.96 ERA for a sub-.500 team.

Yes, you should be happy that your team did not get him on the hook for $20M per year through 2020. He may end up stealing money like Barry Zito.

As a fan of a small-market team, it frightens me that someone like this got this kind of a contract. Here's hoping Jose Berrios is the real deal.

Literally the worst? I don't know. But perhaps the most unjustly-rewarded ever.

Cubs and Rays appear on the verge of doing business. Javier Baez for a marquee pitcher. I'm guessing it won't be Archer.

Per Rosey: Cincy ships Aroldis Chapman to the Dodgers for two prospects.

Update: The Chapman deal is being held up because, like a dumba$$, Chapman *allegedly* fired gunshots and choked his girlfriend last month.

Cubs on verge of acquiring Shelby Miller from Atlanta for presumably a package that involves Javier Baez.

Can anybody fill me in on Carson Smith from Seattle, please? Don't know much about it.

He would have been my pick for AL rookie of the year, but yeah hardly anyone outside of Seattle has heard of him.

He finished the year with a 2.31 ERA in 70 innings pitched, and struck out 92 batters. Aside from a bad stretch in August he was pretty much lights out.

He's a pretty big dude at 6'6" and already possesses one of the best sliders in the game. He has what I would call a 7/8ths delivery which makes that pitch very hard to pick up and he can get it up to almost 90 MPH.

Him and Kimbrel have the potential to be the best setup/closer combo in baseball.

On the surface it seems like a pretty even deal. A borderline top 50 starter for a borderline top ten reliever, not much difference in age between the two and a throw in guy in Roenis Ellis, but I don't think there's much doubt that the Red Sox are trying to copy the Royals blueprint.

Looks like the Cubs are moving in on Zobrist. They're gonna have to give him too many years, unfortunately, but it'd be nice if they gave him a slightly similar deal to Lackey so that the financial wounds aren't as crushing long term.

You have both of the NL's (good) California teams, the Mets, and the Nats all vying to sign him, and apparently he's already been offered a four year deal. Good luck with that.

It's to the point where Zobrist's demand has gotten so high, that I actually hope the Giants miss out on him, no matter how good of a fit he may be.

I wouldn't be totally shocked to see him land a deal that's scary close to nine figures.

That's an unbelievably stupid move on Arizona's part.

Ben Zobrist signs with the Cubs. 4 years/$56M.

Starlin Castro immediately shipped to the Yankees.

Javy Baez remains a Cub -- for now.

Im stunned the numbers are that low.
