Let The Hot Stove Heat Up: 2015-2016 MLB Offseason

The Mets and Terry Collins agreed to a 2-year deal.

I'm beginning to wonder how much longer he will manage as he's 64, which makes him the oldest manager in baseball. He looks good for his age, but I feel as if these 2 years will be his last. Then again, I could easily be wrong.

Dusty, just win a :censored: championship already.Of course you won one as a player on the Dodgers in '81,but you led the Giants in '02,only to let your son almost to be crippled at home plate, blow your chances at the Giants first championship since '54.Just win one for the Nats.

This will probably be it for him. He's been talking pretty openly about retirement as he approaches 70. And he's actually 66, not 64.

I can actually see Zack Greinke going back to Kansas City.

The same team that couldn't afford to bring back James Shields is gonna get Greinke?

I can actually see... Yankees trading A-Rod and signing Cespedes and Zobrist.

What team in MLB would want to trade for A-Rod? Don't see that happening at all.
I could see a couple, but they would all be lemon deals.

I don't think the Yankees could shed much salary by trading A-Rod.

I think the Giants have a very good shot at winning the division in 2016, but they need to grab a couple of key pieces this offseason. They certainly have the money to make it happen. This year there are a myriad of good options on the pitching market, but they really need that second ace (Price/Greinke). After that, they could turn their focus to adding another starter or a quality option in LF. Among the available outfielders, Zobrist probably makes the most sense, as he provides insurance for Panik if his back issues linger.

The White Sox extended a qualifying offer to Jeff Samardzija. For people who didn't pay attention, after being traded to the Sox and turning down an offseason extension worth close to $100 million, he had the worst season of any starting pitcher in baseball last year. To up his value, Jeff's people reached out to local media boob Dave Kaplan to spread a story that his struggles were due to the pitching coach forcing him to change his delivery.

So, the qualifying offer is over $16 million. A season that awful has got to be an outlier, but how much of one? He's not going to get a $100 mil this offseason, but he could get over $60 mil easily. It seems like there's a realistic chance he will accept the offer and try to rebuild his value before taking another shot at free agency next year. And that wouldn't be a bad thing for the Sox, unless he's just as bad as he was this year.

Thankfully, they didn't make a qualifying offer to Aioki. I have a feeling that this means they're going to try to make a big push for a big name, or maybe even two.

I'd like to say Grenkie/Price AND Heyward, but dare to dream, right?

But they'll probably only walk away with Leake and make another offer to Byrd, because that's what the Giants are prone to do. I think they've still got a bit of PTSD from the Zito deal.

I think the Giants are going to make some big moves this off-season. The Aoki decision tells me that they (1) are stockpiling their funds for starting pitching and (2) want a real leftfielder. Internally, they know they need something more than Mike Leake to fix the rotation. We saw what happened with the quantity over quality approach this year, and it wasn't pretty on most days. Every single NL Postseason team this season had multiple aces. Frankly, Zito was already on a downward trend when the Giants signed him - it was just a terrible decision all-around.

Look at the approach the Giants took at the deadline. They had a deal in place for Cole Hamels before the Rangers swooped in. They tried for Kazmir, Cueto, and Price before they turned to Leake. IMO, it's pretty obvious that they want that second ace in the rotation. Now they have the chance to pay in cash instead of prospects.

2 hours, 40 minutes until free agency begins.
