The completely useless Padres just traded Craig Kimbrel to the Red Sox for a bag of dirty baseballs.

Speaking of having a Porsche in the garage or an ace closer when you never have a lead, the Phillies are reportedly open to dealing Ken "100-Miles" Giles. He doesn't have nearly the name as a Kimbrel, but mostly because he was blocked by Papelbon until the end of last season. This guy is going to be the truth, and he's under control for 4 more years (I think). I'd hold on to him and let him build up that big name for himself this year then deal him, but if your team is looking for a back-end 8th or closer guy, hope that Andy Macphail and Matt Klentac are dumb and give him up for nothing.

Wieters accepts the qualifying offer from the O's. My initial thoughts:

I thought we'd see the end of the world before a Boras client accepted a QO. The move, however, makes tons of sense for Wieters (coming off an injury, can rebuild his market, gets 15.8 mil this year). Still undecided whether this is a good move from the O's perspective. Obviously Wieters is extremely talented, but Caleb Joseph filled in really admirably last year. And 15.8 mil is a lot to pay for an injury-riddled guy for one season. All that said, I'm happy to have him back, but 15.8 mil is a lot of money.

Oh crap. That's awesome. There was a rumor floating around ESPN Boston about the Sox doing background works on Chapman (don't know if this cancels that out) but if it turns out true, that's one hell of an upgrade to the bullpen. Here's hoping that Greinke jumps ship to the AL.

I don't know about that. Looks like they got good defensive players who play defensive positions, and a possible starter. Kimbrel's great, but he's still just a reliever.

The Red Sox are looking kinda dangerous next year (especially if they make a free agent splash), but every time we say that, they end up finishing last in the division (see: 2015).

Well, from the looks of what San Diego is getting in return, the ONLY prospect that really projects to be a solid every day starter (at this point) is Manuel Margot. And He's still really young so who knows? Guerra and Logan Allen could end up being pretty meh big leaguers for them too, but the rest of the pieces, while not terrible, seem to be not much more than filler for a salary dump on the Padres' part.

And I'll even agree that this is definitely a move the Padres needed to make, because Kimbrel was basically wasting away with a team like San Diego. But why the hell did they even bother bringing in Kimbrel in the first place? They brought in Kimbrel AND had to pick up the salary of Melvin Upton Jr to get him, then they just turn around and deal Kimbrel a year later for more filler?

So yeah, probably not a terrible trade for the Padres in terms of what they got, but it's nothing compared for the price they paid for one lost season with him. What was even the point of all of that?

If the Orioles don't resign Chris Davis, they could use Wieters at 1B (he was scheduled to start at first a few games this past season). This would give Caleb Joseph the time behind the plate he deserves.

That's actually a good idea. It's a win-win: the Orioles keep both Joseph and Wieters in the lineup, and it gives Wieters more versatility, which will improve his market after the season ends.

Il afraid this is what'll happen. Let Davis go and have Weiters/Joseph/Clevenger as a C 1B DH platoon.

Also speaking as a guy who loves Joseph it sucks, but not as much as this being the Davis replacement.

1) Good. I'm VERY happy about this.

2) We're going to be subjected to a Jeter-like "retirement tour" for this roided up DH now, aren't we?

Still puzzled how Ortiz has been given a pass for his failed 2003 PED test, when *cleaner* guys like Pizzza and Bagwell are still somehow blackballed from the sport.

At this point, I hope Griffey gets into Cooperstown next year, admits to doping, so they just say "fxck it" open the door for other PED users.

That's been one of my biggest issues with how whole PED thing has been handled. How much a player is liked or disliked seems to matter as much as the drugs themselves.

As far as Ortiz's Hall chances, tough to say. If it was a popularity contest he would be in on the first ballot. But the PED issue will hurt him and the fact that he was a career DH will also hurt him.

As far as what I think his HOF chances should be, I would lean pretty heavily towards no. A 139 OPS+ looks great until you see Jack Clark sitting at 137. Normally I wouldn't just stop there when looking a player, because OPS is not the be all end all statistic when it comes to evaluating players. But when its a DH who doesn't steal bases, other than strikeouts not really sure if there's any other stat I really need to be looking at.

A solid hitter no doubt, but not someone who I would put amongst the all-time greats at the dish and what he did at the plate is the only positive he brought to the table as a player.

If Red Sox fans want to support someone, I'm someone that would say yes to Nomar.

The best shortstop in baseball signed a six year contract extension with the Giants.

I think you're lying to yourself

Best of a bad bunch is probably a better way of putting things as nobody really set the world on fire at that position last year. But just going on last year, I would agree. Brandon Crawford was the best shortstop in baseball in 2015.

Six years at $75 million I don't think is a bad deal either. 2015 will probably go down as the best year Brandon Crawford ever had, but I don't see why he can't be in that second tier of starting shortstops for the next few years. If that winds up being the case it will be a well spent $75 million.
