Inaccurate colors/uniforms in video games that should know better

Recommended Posts

NHL All-Star Hockey 96 on the Saturn was especially weird since it was 2D sprites on a 3D playing surface. Really weird choice there. The transition from 2D to 3D was really tough in the 16-bit era; most of those games don't hold up at all.

My contribution to this thread is from Hulu's Nine Perfect Strangers. Minor spoiler if you're interesting in watching the show, but here's their take on the San Francisco 49ers:

What? How? That looks more like a raiders, Pittsburgh mash up rather than anything close to resembling the 9ers

Yes Madden 05-12 on the final days of PS2 had those uniforms plus a monochrome Jaguars Teal Top/Pants combination that was never worn.

Sadly for some reason EA doesn't add Away Throwback uniforms for most teams.

Missing Away Throwback uniforms

Buffalo 1990 White

New England 1985 White/w Red Pants

New England 1993-1999 White (also EA has the 93-99 Home in Dark Navy when it should be Royal blue)

New York Jets 1985 White & 1991 White w/Kelly Green Pants

Cincinnati 1970 White & 1988 White

Houston Oilers 1979 White

Jacksonville 1995 White

Denver 1965 White & 1986 White

LA-San Diego 1980 White & 1994 White

New York 1986 White

Washington (for obvious reasons)

Philadelphia 1980 White

Tampa Bay 1979 White & 1992 White/w Creamsicle pants

Atlanta 1980 White & 1991 White

Seattle 1979 White

Phoenix 1992 White w/Dark Red Pants

y'know, I'm willing to wager inaccurate NASCAR paint schemes count for this, so I might as well point out that in a lot of NASCAR games (at least the '00s EA Sports ones), some of the drivers' sponsors are censored for promoting products that wouldn't fly in an E-rated game (good examples being Dale Jr. and Rusty Wallace's Bud and Miller Lite schemes being reworked to just spell out their own names). the funniest one, though, is probably this one I discovered playing Thunder '04 a bit ago: they had to change Mark Martin's Viagra-sponsored car to Pfizer.

Pfizer? Pffft. Bet it doesn’t go as fast or last as long as it would with the Viagra logo.

Actually that's not so unusual, during those years Martin would run a scheme with Pfizer instead of Viagra on it once a year, usually the 2nd race of the season.

(Sorry for the double post, but I really felt this deserved its own)
As it happens though, I do know of a funny example of those censorship policies affecting the NASCAR games and their roster. Consider the case of Richard Childress Racing's 3rd team, which from 2001-2004 was the #30 AOL Chevy. In 2005 however, they took on sponsorship from Jack Daniel's, changing the team's number to #07 to match.
Dv8cwICWoAcjGeL.jpg
A race car so deeply alcohol-branded that even its number and font matched Jack's branding is obviously problematic for the E-rated video games. At first, EA had an easy solution: leave the car out of the games entirely! And so the #07 Chevy was omitted from NASCAR 06 and 07 altogether. This wasn't a big deal at first, since Dave Blaney struggled in the ride in 2005 and thus wouldn't really be missed in that year's video game, but a problem arose in 2006 when a rookie named Clint Bowyer took over the ride, and in his sophomore season of 2007 rose to become a serious title contender, eventually finishing 3rd in the points standings. A driver of his stature wouldn't be so easily ignored, so for NASCAR 08 EA would pretty much have to include his car.

Luckily, in 2006 Bowyer's team took on secondary sponsorship from DirecTV, even running their livery a handful of times a year:
2006-07dtv-dover2-side.jpg
So EA decided to promote that paint scheme to be Bowyer's primary only car in the video games, removing the remaining Jack Daniel's imagery from the car in the process - including, just to be totally safe, the distinctively-Jack's number, replacing it with a more generic looking "07":

This continued for NASCAR 09, EA's last (non-Wii arcade) NASCAR game and which incidentally covered the final season of the Jack's sponsorship deal.

Did the Rams have a one-off metallic gold jersey like the Saints,  or am I just remembering seeing it in Madden?

I remember the silver Raiders jersey. I would sometimes use it in place of the white on the road when I played as them.

Not sure if I can quite remember the 49ers’ gold alt from the game. I didn’t play as them very often.

Imagining a black alternate in the 1997-2013 Buccaneers’ set, it just *feels* like a fashion jersey. Could it have ever been in their plans, then scrapped at the last minute? I feel like that was the case with the gold Rams jersey, but I could be wrong.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject of 2000s Madden...can’t speak for other platforms or years, but Madden ‘08 for PC had a bizarre alternate for the Cardinals. I feel like it had to be a glitch that somehow slipped past both programmers and  testers...basically, the helmet was black, or a really reflective metallic charcoal color. I’m not even sure what the jersey and pants (this was prior to mix-and-match) looked like because the helmet design is all I can remember. It was mind-boggling. I’ll look for pics.

Nah, just a fashion jersey EA decided to throw in (2K did so too)

I remember this in NASCAR 08 and being really baffled by it...another thing that happened in NASCAR video games was that in NASCAR The Game 2011, they would put other cars from the lower series (Nationwide and trucks) and put them on the Cup Series body. And whenever two cars had the same number, they would put a letter next to it like a car from your local short track.

Then again, the game as a whole was baffling.

Not great.

The jersey is from The Program.  It's made an apperance in a few movies.  I believe it was also a road uniform for Varsity Blues.  Getting good usage out of Hollywood recycling uniforms for multiple projects

As a kid I never understood why there was an A next to the "alternate Biffle scheme," or why it said Bayne instead of Biffle, or why it had the Nationwide logo instead of the Sprint Cup one.

...I wasn't the sharpest tool in the box.

Still not certain why EA never added missing White Away Throwback uniforms to Madden starting in the PS3 era. They blazed past PS4 and now the PS5 still doesn't have them (80's Broncos White/80's Seahawks White/80's Oilers White etc.).

Because EA would rather remake the same game for a decade with no real updates other than rosters and charge people $70 for what could just be a roster update

Not a video game, but I just realized that the movie version of A League of Their Own had the Rockford Peaches wearing an inaccurate hat. The Amazon series has them in the correct hat. I also hadn't realized they had plain white practice/media uniforms as well as the pink uniforms. When it came to the jersey/skirts they added red buttons when they should have been clear and the roundel was correct on the 1993 version but all red on the 2022 versions.

Follow-Up: After finding the league page,  https://www.aagpbl.org/, and looking through the uniforms here's what I have surmised for the moment:

Rockford (movie): Wrong hat. They never wore a circle cap until 1947, and that was a red circle and red R, per the team photo. The hat worn in the 1993 movie wasn't worn until 1948.

Rockford (Amazon Prime)" Correct hat, wrong tunic. The one they wear in the TV series was used in 1945.

Amy Irene Applegren

1945 uniform. Now if they jumped to 1945 for the second season the uniforms for Rockford would be 100% correct.

South Bend Blue Sox

The uniform for 1943 is correct as far as I can tell, but I may have to watch the games again.

Melanie Field on A League of Their Own Role, Rosie O'Donnell | POPSUGAR Entertainment

Racine Belles

http://cdn.images.insidelacrosse.com/legacy/imagesimages/LeagueofTheirOwn.jpg

Font for the hat may have been incorrect but the rest of the uniform was correct in both the movie (100%) and the TV show (90%-99%).  Also, a 1943 video on YouTube had the two teams (South Bend and Racine) with the old Chicago Cub style numbers. So that was incorrect in both the TV series and the movie. There's also a 1993 TV series that I didn't even remember but they just reused the same uniforms form the movie so I wouldn't expect any changes there.

Kenosha Comets

Dianne's Costumes and Research

The font is incorrect. This is also a reenactors tunic and not an authentic one, so they treated the numbers from the movie as the correct font.

Game information spoiler below:

Spoiler

The Amazon series also had them losing to the wrong team in the championship, with South Bend, who finished third, beating them instead of Racine.  In fact, both the movie and TV series are incorrect because Rockford were the worst team in the league in 1943.

Other things that both got wrong:

-Pitching: Underhand was the only pitching style used until 1945/46. In 45 some ladies started pitching sidearm and it was allowed in 1946. Then overhanded pitching finally came into play in 1947.  That alone would have made the coaches rants stand out even  more because they would be arguing that they weren't playing baseball, just softball in a different package.

https://www.aagpbl.org/history/rules-of-play

The fields: Granted finding the types of fields actually used at the time are nearly impossible unless they build them themselves.

This one was basically the old football stadium/track configuration with a very short outfield.

Tecmo released their NBA games (Tecmo NBA & Tecmo Super NBA) during the 1992-93 season but still used the 1991-92 rosters and logo for the Phoenix Suns (pre 1992-93 change). The SNES version came out in early 93 while the NES version was released in November-December. The SNES version also looked better obviously and the colors stood out more. Also worth noting was that the NES version has the Dallas Mavericks in Blue while the SNES (and later Sega) version as them in Green when they actually switched to Blue for away games during the 92-93 campaign. Also the Sega version was released in December 1993 and had the updated logos for the Suns/Bucks/Nuggets and had the 1993-94 rosters (minus rookies) for the 1993-94 season. Also even though the Genesis version had the new logos for the Suns/Bucks/Nuggets they still had the Bucks and Nuggets in Green and Royal Blue respectively instead of the accurate Purple (Bucks) and Navy (Nuggets).
