The 'T' in Toronto FC's crest appears navy blue to me.

It's not. Never has been.

I think it's another iteration on the argument against Euro-fied naming conventions in soccer. He'd rather they be Toronto Metros than Toronto FC, but he made the point by comparing its name to Liverpool FC.

I think that's referring to the fact that their "nickname" being "The Reds" just like Liverpool.

They also hosted a mid-season friendly a few seasons ago against Liverpool and sold it as "the reds vs the reds" so I guess I can see that compairison.
That said, I think it's fair to say the nickname "TFC" is much more commonplace than "the reds".

That's correct.

The Metro-Croatia won Soccer Bowl '76 and the Blizzard were Soccer Bowl finalists in '83 and '84. The Blizzard also had well known players like Canadian Nationals like Bruce Wilson and Sam Lenarduzzi and South African legend Jomo Sono.

Generic Euro brands belong in Europe.

And that all amounted to what, exactly? Vancouver's MLS team didn't resurrect the Whitecaps name. It had been used for various pro soccer teams in Vancouver for years. The name had a long, almost continuous, history that made it a no-brainer for the MLS franchise to use.

The Metros/Metro-Croatia/Blizzard identities died with the team.

As for the names themselves...

Metro-Croatia was always stupid. Appealing to one immigrant community in a city as large and diverse as Toronto is a bad move marketing-wise. I know I'll jump ship if they ever revert to the Metro-Croatia name.

"Metros" wasn't going to fly. Yeah, the MetroStars had become the Red Bulls, but I still consider the "Metro" name to belong to that franchise. At least as far as MLS goes.

Blizzard could have worked had they adopted it back in 2007, but they didn't. Probably for the reason I stated above. It hadn't been used for so long, and the "Toronto Blizzard" brand just didn't mean anything anymore.

As for your "Euro names" argument? TFC has had that name for going on ten years now. Twice as long as the Blizzard were known by that name. It's "Toronto Football Club" that has currency among fans. Not "Toronto Blizzard."

I updated my MLS Next graphic to reflect the LAFC shield logo and the Red Bulls' new version.

I'm with you on the Metro-Croatia. I would much prefer "Metros".

I believe  the Blizzard name can work in MLS.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on TFC.

Cheers.

Yeah, it's all unbearably drab.   How can black, red and gold be so lifeless?

Full disclosure, I am clearly biased (see avatar), but I think it'll be a classy look when we go with the stripes. And I think the club will play up the gold. It looks remarkable when used as a metallic.

I'm pretty sure the new NASL has the Toronto Blizzard trademark.

According to my quick trademark search, the Blizzard name is currently held by Joe Parolini, former GM of the Blizzard when they were in the CSL. No indication that he is affiliated with the new NASL.

Anyone else get a weird Avengers vibe from this particular depiction of the logo?

Yeah, looks like the closing credits.

The problem is that it will only occasionally be "used as a metallic".  For the majority of applications, it's a dark brown paired with dark red and black.  No life there at all, just drab layered on drab.

It's the same problem I have with my Brewers' current uniforms.  Metallic gold against navy looks outstanding in the sunlight.  Sublime. But in every application other than a ballcap in the bright afternoon sun of a July day, they're stuck with bland navy and khaki-brown.  And no amount of hometown homerism can make that better.

Your avatar is fantastic, with the gold framing white.  I'm not in favor of shoehorning white where it isn't needed (see "New York Yankees, road uniforms of"), but this is one time where a little white would have saved it.  The logo is adequate, but dragged down by an awful color scheme.

Guess I was wrong on that one.

I've already nicknamed them the Avengers in my head.

That's a lot to live up to.

Odds are they start off like a regular expansion team, which is less Earth's Mightiest Heroes and more... these guys.

TBF, the color scheme would brighten up a bit if they went that route.

I agree wholeheartedly, this Atlanta scheme is 90's Nuggets, Brewers, Pelicans depressing. It sucks the life out of a team and just makes the whole thing lifeless feeling regardless of the actual quality on the field. That sounds incredibly dramatic but color is way too big a part of our emotional response. I can't think of any drab on drab teams that are considered exciting, and they all require change within a decade.

See, that's a great treatment of the color scheme.  But the shades of red and gold that Atlanta has been using are significantly darker.

It's and odd colour scheme that needs the right shades for it to work.

I instantly think of the old A.I. 6ers era with red, gold and black.....
