Should be interesting to see what the other Oklahoma City team does.

The Energy had an attendance around 5,600 last week for their home opener according to Wikipedia.

I saw some Twitter highlights, and the Cosmos stadium looked deserted.

Turns out they packed everyone into one side of the stadium. Which is their new normal.

Probably looked better on television, but I can't imagine that the atmosphere was any good.  Everybody in the stadium had to look past the pitch to a sea of empty seats.

Haven't seen an official count, but based on that photo I'm guessing that the attendance had to have been between five and six thousand.

Does anybody else do this?

EDIT: the official number is 5,094.  That's gotta smart.

The weather didn't really do the Cosmos any favors last night.

According to people that were there people went home early because of the wind and the cold weather.

Not quite the league record, but really strong numbers for an inaugural game. Beat us by a good 3,000 people for our home opener. That's a really nice field they're at, too.

Count me impressed with Cincinnati.  They made some pretty major missteps early on but they seem to have corrected them through the sheer will of some of their supporters groups.

We'll see how it lasts. I'm hopeful for them but I've heard more than a few people call Cincinnati an "event town" where people turn up for events like opening day but not for the long haul. I don't live there so I don't really know how true that is so we'll see!  They have another home game against a rival this week!

Indy got 9k for a game 2 degrees above freezing.  Probably 7k actual so not bad.  I'm thinking it'll be closer to 10k this week against the Cosmos.

This is mostly true, but I can see a scenario where a thing like a biweekly pro soccer game becomes an "event" especially since it's relatively inexpensive. I heard a lot chatter about the team in the weeks leading up to the first game coming from people I wouldn't expect to be interested in soccer. Maybe it was just curiosity, maybe it was just something to do on a Saturday night. I didn't go, but they won and it looked like fun so that can't hurt.

They're also fortunate in that they've caught the Reds in what should be a down year. Many people were miffed at the Reds' moves this offseason and have sports entertainment money to spend elsewhere this summer. If they'd come to town in 2012 when the Reds were dominating the sports attention I don't think they'd have as much of a chance at getting noticed.

I don't want to get to big of a head or anything, but I'm pretty sure Don Garber was impressed with what he saw in Sacramento today.

Garber says MLS will have 28 teams by 2020, and targets Sacramento (if Mayor McGrabass can steal enough taxpayer money again), St. Louis, and Detroit as expansion markets.

On one hand, the idea of having Minnesota, St. Louis, and Detroit in the league within 4 years is a fantastic prospect for Chicago. On the other hand, my, what a pretty bubble we have here, slowly floating upward.

Funny, everything I've been hearing lately says that the new Republic stadium would be privately funded.

Thats the plan, but they still need to get certain city and state funding for infrastructure around the park and things like that. There are quite a few moving parts to this whole thing, and certain things Republic doesn't want to (and shouldn't have to) pay for.

Sorry, but a privately-owned professional sports team (or private collegiate one) should have to get its own money its own way without pillaging the tax coffers, every single time. I don't care if the ownership is good people interested in the community, my tax money is not meant to finance their toys which, time and time again, have shown negligible financial benefit at best.

You want public money? Okay, then get ready for partial public ownership of your team proportional to the investment, along with the full and open release of the team's financials every year.

What exactly would those be?

I'm curious too. If it's anything on the site, that's all Republic. If it's roads leading to the site, that's probably on the Republic too. If it's deferred maintenance on utilities nearby, well, that seems trickier. But in general, most everything should be on the Republic.

Another question: does MLS need to be expanding so much?

Everything involving the park should be on Republic to pay for, and there's no disagreement (at least from me) there. But there are some serious issues with the surrounding area that the city needs to take care of (and has needed to take care of for a LONG time anyway, regardless of SRFC's stadium) for this whole thing to work. The area was basically a toxic waste dump before this, and the roads have been in bad need of repair anyway.

Its somewhat similar to the San Francisco Giants putting a privately funded ballpark in the China Basin. It's a pretty hefty financial commitment on the part of the owners that is going to revitalize an area that's been mostly neglected. The city (or county, or state, or whoever deals with the funding on all of this. I'm not entirely sure which public entity it would be) should, at least, do what they can to make sure the surrounding roads aren't crumbling and the ground isn't poisonous.

Also, I don't think they're even going to need to do things like add an additional tax to pay for any of that, either. It's more a matter of shifting current public funds for infrastructure to that area. It's basic stuff that was on the docket anyway, but this just bumps it up on the priority list. From what I understand, that's not terribly uncommon.
