I've watched a game from that side of the field as well as the opposite side in the Key Bank VIP Section or whatever it's called now. I agree about the columns, but other than adding supports to the top of the roof or removing it entirely I think what they have works because the other option is to close off the street behind these seats to anchor the supports which would probably not happen in Portland. I'm actually glad they kept the older parts of the stadium but it can seem like you're in a totally different stadium depending on where in the stadium you are. Looking at this picture I didn't realize how much of the eastern side is not covered by the roofing on that side. The South end is completely open and it looks like they added bleachers specifically for that game because it was almost entirely open when I went there in 2011.

They’ve permanently had seats in the south end for the last handful of years.

Anyway, the point of Providence Park really isn’t to have some incredibly modern world-class venue, so it really shouldn’t be criticized for not being one. You wouldn’t go to Fenway and complain that everyone’s squeezed in on uncomfortable bleachers or that there’s a pole blocking your view. Clearly, Providence Park isn’t Fenway from an “iconic” standpoint, but it’s Portland’s historic sports venue, and that’s kinda the point of it.

I’ve been to sports events at a lot of places, but there are few venues that match Providence Park in terms of atmosphere.

Considering that Rayo has spent the last forty years bouncing back and forth between the first and second divisions, only able to crack the top half of La Liga three times, you'd think that the NASL would have had a contingency plan for their possible relegation.

The NASL has a terrible expansion model. They're so committed to this "independent club" thing that they don't identify the markets they want to be in, but wait for ownership groups to to come knocking wherever they are.

They have a really weird way of sticking to the independent club model by creating feeder clubs for European teams.

Was there a feeder agreement with Rayo?   Or did the Spanish club just put in some money to buy naming rights (money they turned out not to have after all)?

Rayo Vallecano supporters had issues with their club potentially using Rayo OKC as a training ground for players instead of the academy in Vallecas so I figured there was probably some sort of feeder agreement.

I could see Sacramento walking away from this saying thanks but no thanks even with the new stadium plans. Which would be a real shame.

It definitely complicates things. We've had a few pretty major shifts in staff this month that have complicated matters even further as well.

Speaking of that, pretty scary moment at the game last night vs San Antonio FC. One of their defenders, Milton Palacios, went down extremely hard right in the end I was working in and was carted off and rushed to UC Davis Medical Center. I was watching it pretty closely and at no point did he move. I've been looking for updates to his condition all day to no avail. It was probably the scariest injury I've ever seen live.

If DC United doesn't make the playoffs (which seems likely) I may pull for one of the Canadian clubs to win the MLS Cup this year.

Toronto is a fun team to watch. Obviously that's in large part due to one player but they've been so poor for so long I'm hoping they get some success.

So what is the news on MLS expansion? Last I saw Minnesota has a TBA date, Atlanta is next year and LA after than and Miami is up in the air. So is Atlanta going to possibly be a one team expansion next season?

Presser/event coming August 19th that should announce Minnesota as an expansion side for 2017, joining Atlanta.

Agreed. MLS has previously stated they don't want teams to enter the league one at a time.

Minnesota United FC will be joining Major League Soccer in time for the 2017 season. The team - which will be keeping its current name and a slightly tweaked logo (most notably, Minnesota United FC has been replaced with MNUFC in the crest) - will play home matches at TCF Bank Stadium until construction of its soccer-specific facility in St. Paul is completed.
