Obafemi Martins is on his way to China.

Ouch. That's a BIG loss for the Sounders. I'm sure they pulled in a LOT of money for him, and they have a pretty solid replacement in Jordan Morris. BUT, Morris is going to take at least some time to develop into that role, and a truckload of cash doesn't do much for you when the top stars looking for that final paycheck are turning it down for a cruiseshipload of cash in China.

That's not how I read that article. He's selling an equity stake, but not his stake.   Some of that new equity stake will come out of his percentage, most likely, but it's not like he's getting out and looking for a replacement.  Nor is there any indication that this new partner would be able to control anything.

Look, just build 11 new stadia in Dade County, and everybody's good to go for 2022.

I'm digging the Mark Davis haircut.  He is really taking this sports ownership thing seriously.

So after 1 leg of the CONCACAF Champions League...

LA Galaxy 0-0 Santos Laguna

RSL 0-2 Tigres

Seattle 2-2 Club America

DC United 0-2 Querétaro

RSL and DC play at home next round, but the two best hopes to knock off Liga MX go to Mexico to do it. I just want MLS to catch up with Liga MX so bad.

I just got an e-mail from the Soccer United Fan Council. (I'm sure a number of you here participate in this as well) and it kind of gave a quick summery of what the polls they sent out over 2015 came back with. This particular one stood out to me:

  • MLS Playoff Format Study – The majority of fans were supportive of switching to a 12-club post-season format (62%). Many fans felt the new format would create more excitement around the push to the playoffs, particularly with clubs duking it out for the seeds that receive a bye during the knockout round.

I kind of hoped that this would go in the opposite direction but I guess this proves the point that North Americans love playoffs.

You are probably going to have to increase the salary cap and add more DP slots in order to do that.

Oh yeah without a doubt. Liga MX was founded in 1943 also, so their development is much further along. In addition to the cap and DP space, I think domestic talent is also a big reason. Give it a few more years of developing more first team starters, then it'll bridge the gap. But for the time being, the CONCACAF Champions League should be the biggest goal for MLS.

Not to mention, by the time the knockout round group of 8 happens, MLS is in preseason, and Mexico is in mid season form

Liga MX is a pretty strong league so it may take a while.

The best teams that don't qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League do a decent job in the Copa Libertardores as well. Tigres made it all the way to the final of the competition last year.

The bad thing about MLS's playoffs was the way that they tended to flatten out the reward for the different finishing places, which, in turn, robbed the regular season of significance. This led to teams using early-season games as little more than glorified training sessions.

The introduction of play-in games a couple of years ago partially remedied this, by erecting a higher barrier for the lower-seeded teams. And the expansion of the playoffs from a 10-team field to a 12-team field actually improved the situation further by making all but the top two seeds in each conference play in the first round, thereby creating a discernable difference between finishing near the league's top versus near the league's middle.

The remaining flaw in the system is that there is still no real difference between finishing first versus second, between finishing third versus fourth, and between finishing fifth versus sixth. Furthermore, the two-legged format in the conference semifinals and conference finals effectively levels out the advantage that the higher seed ought to possess in those rounds.

The ideal playoff system would reward each place differently. We can imagine a system in MLS involving an 8-team playoff field whereby, in each conference, no. 4 plays at no. 3 midweek, and the winner travels to no. 2 on the weekend. The winner of that match then travels to no. 1 on the following weekend for the conference final. (All single matches.) And then the MLS Cup Final would be played the week after that.

This system rewards each place from no. 1 to no. 4 very differently, creating strong incentives to compete for those places. Under this format, teams would certainly not be taking the first part of the season off.  And this entire playoff also takes far less time to complete than the current system, which would help keep the MLS Cup Final out of December.

What such a system does not do, however, is to give a home game to every team in the conference semifinals and conference finals. Just as the improvement represented by the introduction of play-in games required dropping the longstanding policy that every single playoff team get a home game, and just as last year's improvements cut out home games for two more playoff teams, further improvement of the playoffs would require further curtailment of home games. Unfortunately, that is a step which MLS is unlikely to take.

Real Salt Lake handed the game to Tigres in the last 15 minutes of the game. Pretty sad. And in the LA-Santos game it seemed like the ref didn't want to penalize Santos for hard fouls but gave a card to Gerrard for a clean tackle.
