Expos logo discussed on sitcom in 1988

That Jacksonville Expos logo shows exactly why the Montreal version fails - it forms a perfect letter in the way the other doesn't.

Now, now, wait a minute. Let's be fair and let's be consistent. The outline of the Jacksonville logo looks more like a music note, or a lowercase "d," rather than a J. Most people would see that logo's OUTLINE and think that it is a lowercase "d," or a music note, not a J. I want to see you do the whole thorough "outline" treatment you did with the Expos "M," and then we can really assess it. Don't give it credit so fast without seeing whether it passes your "outline" test.

No. Regardless of the outline, the Jacksonville logo reads as a "J" because of the added dimension from the swirl.

I'd lean toward yes, but it's hard to say with certainty because there's no "bring back the Expos" movement on par with the "bring back the Nordiques" movement, which, like I've said, wants the same name, colors, logo, and uniform.

Well, here's an interesting article I found from August.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/19/sports/baseball/baseball-fever-remains-in-montreal-with-hope-of-a-new-team.html?_r=0

Tampa would be the obvious choice for the team that relocates, but then Montreal still would have to get a stadium plan in place in pretty short order. Is Olympic stadium even usable anymore?

I can guarantee that Tampa will not move.

You're right; the clear odds are no franchise moves.

But if anyone did, or for the frivolous purposes of this discussion, you can't blame us for naming the Rays; given the attendance problems even in periods of tremendous on-field success, they're the obvious choice.

There is an Expos documentary on the MLB Network tonight, January 26, at 9pm Eastern and Pacific.  It is narrated by William Shatner, who is a native of Montreal!

I hope the show will touch on the logo.

They talked about the caps for a bit, but not the logo.

Still a very good documentary though.

It was.  That kid who did the rap at the end over the closing theme to This Week in Baseball (whose title is "Gathering Crowds") was great. I would have liked to hear the whole song.

The filmmakers did a good job tracking down the fan who was caught looking saddened in the photo from the team's final season.

And I was surprised at how convinced Warren Cromartie is that Montreal will be getting another team.

A side point on that question: as much as Montreal deserves a second chance, I dread the disruption to franchise continuity if a new team there took the Expos nickname.  Still, baseball has already accomplished something like this once without mucking up history, when the expansion Senators were created in the same year that the original Senators moved to Minnesota. No one then thought to claim that those teams share a common history; so let's hope that sanity can prevail again, if this should come to pass.

This is an old discussion but I'm still going to get things straight...

First of all, the Expos logo has nothing to do with the French flag. In Quebec we mostly speak French but we don't take the France flag as our own as it wasn't in use when we arrived in America. The only French symbol we still use as our own is the Fleur-de-Lis, the symbol of France-Old-Regime, where we come from and the international symbol of French-speaking communities all around the world.

This leads to my second point...

The Bleu-Blanc-Rouge colours used by the Expos was just an obvious choice as it has been very popular in Montreal since the Canadiens adopted it in the NHA/NHL. Most major sport teams wore these colours in Montreal (I.E. the CFL's Alouettes).

And third of all,

the Expos name was voted by fans (I think, I should double-check my sources but not now as it is not very important here...!) and it is referring to the Montreal International Exposition of 1967, nicknamed Expo '67. I know this sucks, but eh, what can we do? Most of all weren't around to stop that for happening...

And finally,

The Expos logo is actually a capital "M". (Yes, you have read correctly!) inside the "M" is a lower case red "e" who stands for Expos and a blue "b" for Baseball...

Now, that being said... yes my people (French Canadians) couldn't come up with good logos in the 60-70s. The NHL Nordiques is another good example.

It's just great that they were that bad so they became cool with the years!

Disagree: the imperative to design without relying on one language or another yielded the fantastic NFB logo:

Okay okay I'll give you that one for the NFB/ONF... but sports logos, they didn't come up with anything great though...

Montreal Manic (Soccer- NASL)

Montreal Alouettes (all logos before 1975)

Montreal Expos

Quebec Nordiques

...and probably more that I can't think of right now

IMG_5513.GIFI still think the most ingenious concept I've ever seen for the Nationals had the Expos elb logo turned upside down to make a W.

I agree! I don't follow baseball much since the Expos are gone, so I don't know if they have those legends/vintage/special nights like they do in the NHL (i.e. the Los Angeles Kings wearing their old gold jerseys) but that would be a cool one for the Nationals to wear over the 80's Expos jersey!

Had to look up the old Als and the Manic, but this is great '70s geometric design:

Reminds me of the old UND Sioux logo. And the Bauhaus-esque text! Reminds me of Boards of Canada. Logos have the right to football!
