Ehh...The job was make Rams-Niners a prime time game in Week 1, which they did. It doesn't really matter where its played, especially since the Coliseum is historic and sits a lot of people, but otherwise.... Also, Rams are playing the late shift, which has fewer games, 9 times. That will help for exposure. Finally, they may have moved, but this IS a 7-9 team that hasn't been in the playoffs since the 2004 season and just sacrificed its next two drafts for "QB: TBD (Probably)" I have no gripes with this schedule. EDIT-OK modest gripe about the 6:30 AM local start (7:30 AM for me) in the Giants game LIVE at the only English soccer stadium built on a Native American burial ground, but whatevs, until the Inglewood Death Star is operational in 2019, they are going to do stuff like this. 2nd EDIT: Apparently USC asked for no home MNF games (and also for the Rams not to play at home on the same weekend as the Trojans in general, although the latter request was ignored). I suspect they were practically a rumor. Well, they were playing in Memphis, but practicing in Nashville. There was lots of apathy after week 1 in 1997, as Memphis is a basketball town. There was a bad sub-lease which they had to sign and Memphians didn't want a temp team and those in Nashville didn't want to drive the 200 miles to the Liberty Bowl. They announced the move to Nashville in late 1995/early 1996 right after the Browns left Cleveland, which was enough of a headache for the NFL. Then they said they'd play out the last three years in the Astrodome, which obviously they didn't, because they were only getting like 10,000 a game in 1996, so they had to go to Tennessee, but wouldn't play at Vanderbilt, so they played in Memphis, which was about as rejected by the public as Houston had been the year before, then they went to Vanderbilt for 1998 anyway. Looking back, on the heels of losing both Los Angeles teams and Cleveland in one calendar year, I'm rather surprised the owners didn't put their foot down and say this big city wasn't being swapped out for a smaller city. At any rate, I'm guessing Oilers games those two years were as low on the regional-game totem pole as could be and blacked out in Tennessee, thus going virtually unseen. As rams80 mentioned, being the late game will get the Rams some de facto national games, so at least there's that. I do wonder how many regional games the St. Louis affiliates will pick up. Only one of them didn't steadfastly refuse to go watch a "Nashville team" play in Memphis (and even he said the place was like watching football on Mars). I never really got that, but that was definitely the attitude. Memphis lost the expansion battle to JAX and CAR but a few years later was basically given 1/3rd of a sampler plate with the Oilers. Meanwhile, the lease for any pro football at the Liberty Bowl was owned by the lead of the expansion team ownership group. There are quite a few Memphis newspaper stories written about their disappointment from both the Commercial Appeal and the alt paper, The Memphis Flyer. Sport Posted April 15, 2016 Share Posted April 15, 2016 The NFL suspended Vontaze Burfict for the first 3 games of this season for repeated hits to the head. Fine and the guy is a complete idiot, but it was their rube official who let both of the last two Bengals-Steelers games get out of control. That he was even working the second game after completely botching the first one is an indictment of the NFL's officiating to begin with, but that's another story. So after suspending Burfict for his actions against the Steelers the league schedules the Steelers in one of those first three games. Mike Mitchell has concussed more people in less time than Burfict, including Tyler Eifert, yet remains unpunished. Convince me this league is fair. This sport never gets better. It only gets worse. Would be cool to see a game or two, but more than that, your state's new team starts to get you addicted, and that addiction is going to either involve an overnight trip to Nashville or setting aside 6-7 hours in the car driving to Nashville and back on Sundays. And I've been to a bowl game at the Liberty Bowl. They do have a weird layout. We were only a third of the way up on the sideline seats, and the game felt like a mile away.
