BBTV
Goddammit. It's actually happening. Not that we haven't known it for a few days now.Apparently Ron Jawarski was part of the Eagles coach-search team, and sat in on all the interviews (except the one with the guy they actually hired.)His reasoning for why Pederson is the best hire out of all the candidates is basically (paraphrasing) "Philly is a hard place to coach and most aren't ready for it. He's played here and endured it so he knows what to expect."Wow - now that's an endorsement.A leader of men doesn't use the phrase "well gosh!". Might as well follow it up with "golly gee". Basically hiring a yes-man who they hope will be similar to Andy Reid, who was run out of town for poor clock management, poor play calling, and ultimately poor coaching. Pederson was a laughing stock when he was here, because everyone knew he was just keeping McNabb's spot warm for him. He actually said "well I didn't come here to win ball games".So they bring back the dbag GM that everyone hated, and a dbag former QB that everyone hated, who was recommended by the former HC that most people hated. Absolute marketing genius.EDIT:Former QB Frank Reich expected to be named offensive coordinator. I really was hoping they'd retain Pat Schurmer, but I guess he doesn't want anyone looking over his shoulder.Rumor is Jim Schwartz as DC. Just a rumor though. BBTV
I have absolutely zero clue who Doug Pederson is, but Eagles fans seem to really HATE this move.Who do you think they should've hired, BTTV? When Andy Reid was hired out of nowhere in 1999, he signed Pederson (who was a journeyman QB that played for Miami and GB most notably) to an overpriced deal (as a way of taking care of Pederson's family because he had some kind of relationship or something) to essentially "coach" McNabb until he was ready. Pederson was one of the worst starting QBs I've ever seen, came off like a total douchebag in interviews, and famously said that he wasn't there to win games. After he retired, Reid hired him to be a QC, then QB coach, then OC in KC. Basically he toungs Reid's butthole so Reid keeps him close. When asked how his interview went, his response literally started with "well gosh...", which instantly lost everyone. A leader simply doesn't talk like a 8-year-old bumpkin.I'm not going to pretend to know the entire universe of candidates or how qualified a coordinator is to actually be a head coach. I don't know if Scott Gase would have been good, or McAdoo, or the Fresno State asst. quality control coach.I need the team to either1) do a legitimate coaching search where they talk to a number of strong legit candidates or2) have a target in mind and be aggressive and go get him,and in either case, 3) at least be able to sell the fans on his qualifications and if it's an odd hire, convince people to give him a chance. Then put him up there on stage and let him instill confidence in the fan base. Kelly at least got this part right. They did not make a legit effort to find a new coach, despite claiming that they needed the extra week to make sure they were ready to strike. They didn't interview a single candidate that wasn't an OC (or Tom Caughlin), they Rooney Ruled Duce Staley instead of interviewing a legit black candidate like Hue Jackson, and turned the whole thing in to a farce while they waited for the Chiefs to lose so they could hire Andy Reid's ballsack scratcher, who by all accounts had the shortest interview, and the one that didn't include the entire entourage.I guess of the guys that they interviewed, I would have hired Pat Schurmer. He has head coaching experience, does speak like someone in charge rather than "golly gee gosh shucks", has experience as a QC, an OC, and also with Chip Kelly's offense, plus he was a first hand witness to what went wrong, and was endorsed by players. I don't know that Doug Pederson sucks as a coach. But I have absolutely no reason to think that he doesn't suck. At least with the other candidates and with Schurmer, I can cite reasons why they don't suck. Kind of in the Detmer (Ty? Koy? Didn't both play in Philly) mold.I think it'd be akin to Tim Rattay or Ken Dorsey coaching the 49ers.Not quite. Pederson only spent one season here and started 9 games. He was brought in specifically to coach McNabb, and the fans never even considered him part of the team. He has no resume other than being "backup to the stars". Ty and Koy detmer both spent a few years here and Ty was at least a legit starting QB, and Koy was a tough SOB that people loved. Pederson was looked at as if Andy Reid was playing QB. I don't know how to describe it, but he wasn't really part of the team. In a way, his dopey smiley face became a symbol for the hatred that people had toward Reid.I remember him best as Favre's backup for a long time.He actually QBd Don Shula's 300th win (against the Eagles!) when he was Marino's backup or 2nd backup. He also backed up Favre when Andy Reid was the QB coach, which is where the seeds that would eventually grow in to a very bizarre romance were planted.
