College Football Uniforms - 2016 Season

I'm trying really hard to find a way too like this and am coming up blank.  They need to fire whoever at Nike and within the Oregon program thought that copying that stupid fan concept was a good idea.  Not sure how they couldn't come up with a uniform that honors the Duck but doesn't incorporate large amounts of orange.  To me, this is further proof that Oregon has no real cohesive brand identity for the football program like they'd had in previous years.

Is this next week's uniform?

I don't see a reason to dislike these new Oregon uniforms anymore than the other crazy stuff they've worn. This one actually has a direct link to the team and school that black, volt, chrome, charcoal, carbon, diamond plate, etc. don't.

Here's why I like this Oregon uniform: It has a concept and a purpose. It looks like the famous cartoon mascot. The other uniforms they wear don't have a concept outside of "Hey let's have them wear VOLT and anthracite and we'll put shiny feathers on the sleeves this time instead of the shoulders because reasons"

I love it. If you're going to be known as the program that never wears the same thing twice then you have to be willing to do some goofy things every now and then to prove you can still push the envelope. I would've taken it a step further and put the duck eyes on the forehead of the helmet and a green circle on the top for the hat. A yellow yoke too. I wouldn't want them to wear them for every game, but the thing with Oregon is you don't have to worry about that.

And not for nothing, but I like how the colors look together.

You are right that at least this specialty uniform has a direct connection to the school, whereas say the Lewis and Clark uniforms from last season had nothing to do with the university itself and was all about the state and the expedition out west. And at least this uniform actually utilizes school colors. I'm still not a huge fan of this uniform though, and I definitely wish they could've found a way to honor the Duck without using their rival's main color. Having said that, they did use some restraint in this overall design and I'm grateful for that. The jersey is fairly nice overall and can be used interchangeably with the rest of their uniform elements. As someone joked earlier, they didn't try to mimic the yellow cape that the Duck wears, and they didn't go the Louisville route and introduce a wild helmet with a robo/zombie-chicken looking illustration of their mascot. I'm still not sold on this look, and it is becoming apparent that they're either running out of ideas or trying to hard to maintain their reputation as being the leaders in uniforms and innovation. I can sympathize with Nike and Oregon a little bit because it is hard to try and keep coming up with new ideas, similar to how it would be difficult to come up with book or movie sequels, so I'm hoping this is just a little rough patch. In my mind they're experimenting more these last couple of years and I'm hopeful that they start getting more in tune with the public opinion to see which of their ideas have been well received and which ones haven't. Hopefully they use that information to find their new niche and get back on track.

Rough patch???

This is their best "Special" uniform they have ever worn.

I actually think the Puddles-inspired uniform is genius and a lot better than the other crap they've worn this season. At least it has actual ties to the program's history and identity.

You know when I heard that Oregon was going to have a uniform based on "actual ducks" I kind of got my hopes up that I'd see something outrageous, like maybe a helmet designed to look like a duck's head or something. Instead we got a boring jersey that looks like it was a discarded concept for the University of Miami.

If only they had a helmet that looked like an actual Mallard duck head....I miss this helmet

Eh, these actually seem fun and not the usual soulless Nike chrome/black combat-graffiti. I'm just happy that BOTH school colors are in these uniforms.

You know what? Sports design needs more whimsy. Everything doesn't have to be mean and aggressive. I want to be on the side of the creative struggle that has fun and whimsy. Bring back the Citronauts UCF!

Agreed. This is the first Oregon uniform in a long while that has thought behind it. I often tell my students there are a lot of designers that can make something "cool" but few that can make something cool that also has thought and meaning behind the cool. Important distinction.

Side note - I just got reamed for referring to the "Puddles" uniform to my Duck fan buddies.  Apparently, the mascot is NOT named Puddles and it greatly offends die hard Oregon fans.  His proper name is "The Duck" or "The Oregon Duck."

I'm not talking about this uniform specifically, I'm talking about the fact that the last two seasons they interchanged two different uniform templates entirely, introduced two one-off uniforms that basically had nothing to do with the university but instead were tributes to the state, and the fact that this season they have now worn four different jersey styles and it's unclear what direction they are going with this new set. It's as if their direction with the new set is to have no real direction and that's troubling in my mind. I agree this is one of the better specialty uniforms they've worn, but so far this season it's as if every uniform is a specialty uniform, rather than in the past when their sets still had some cohesion. Personally I like a blend of cohesion while still managing to push the envelope a little bit, and that's what I hope they get back to. This uniform is fun though, and does have a clear inspiration and thought behind it. But it's still not great, and it can't mask the bigger issues that exist with Oregon'a brand.

This is true. I consider myself a die hard Oregon fan but I wouldn't say I get offended if someone refers to The Duck as Puddles, but it does get a tad old that nobody realizes that it's not actually referred to as Puddles.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but wasn't The Duck referred to as Puddles during the Oregon-Disney partnership?

I really like Oregon's uniforms.

I actually think these are better than half the alternates they've worn because the concept has intention -- was thought out.

So the opposite of the shoulders on last week's jerseys

Not really.  The only actually Puddles was a series of live ducks that the students brought to the game before they were told to stop.  They then started using an image of Donald Duck (with Disney's permission) that then made people calling the mascot Donald, The Fighting Duck or The Duck.  It wasn't until about 2009 (after a song by a student group that featured The Duck prominently) that Oregon's contract with Disney about usage and control of the mascot was no longer needed because they didn't view Donald and Oregon's version as the same anymore.  This allowed Oregon to completely take control of The Duck and his subsequent licensing/branding (i.e. the Fighting Duck logo introduced in 2011.)

This is true although the Disney/UO liscensing agreement is still in effect for graphical representations of the Duck, so branding and liscensing is not completely controlled by the university. I believe the Fighting Duck logo may be exempt from that, however, as it's a representation of the actual mascot, rather than Donald Duck, and was designed with that purpose. The agreement still applies to this logo:

The split was only for the costumed Duck though, allowing for more public appearances and a larger leash for the Duck's conduct.

Remember when the Ducks wore volt and everyone was jumping on them for wearing a Nike "corporate color" even though Nike's corpo colors are orange and white. WELL LOOK AT THEM NOW lol

I can't seem to like these either. We have officially jumped ship in terms of uniform awesomeness. The lack of cohesion is very hard to watch. One week we nail it, the next three we look like clowns. It just doesn't seem that hard to me to please the fans, the players, and people who like good design. The Rose Bowl uniforms 2 years ago were gorgeous, those need to be the base home set. Make a white version, a yellow reverse version, and pants to match. Maybe throw in a black version for the 'cruits and call it a day.
